'Fred the Frog' helps children read and spell. He says the word in sounds, but he can't say the whole word, so the children have to help him.
To help children read, Fred (the teacher) says the sounds and then the children say the word. For Example, Fred says c-a-t, the children say 'cat', Fred says l-igh-t, the children say 'light'.
In spelling, Fred teaches the children to use their fingers to break down Green words into their individual sounds to assist spelling. When children look at their own fingers, it allows them to visualise each sound of the word on a single finger. Children say the sounds as they press the sounds onto their fingers.
Children write at the level of their spelling knowledge: that is, they use their knowledge of the alphabet code and the 'tricky' words they have learnt.
When children have fleunt recall of all sounds taught in Read Write Inc. Phonics they may find that the Read Write Inc. Phonics Complex Speed Sounds Poster supports their understanding as they differentiate between different graphemes for the same sound.
