Math Team Information
Math Team Information
Math Team is open to all students, 6-8th graders, regardless of math ability. Mathletes are willing to take risks, keep an open-mind and understand that failing is a part of the process of learning. The goal of Math Team is for students to expand their thinking and problem-solving skills. The math problems mathletes encounter are typically 1-4 years above their current grade-level, depending on the student. The MN Jr. High Math League does this intentionally to provide students with exposure to challenging concepts that allow them to focus on the process of thinking critically to solve problems using the knowledge they have, rather than fixating on memorizing a procedure to get an answer.

Students are scored as a team, as well as individually. Although the official team has only six members (and there may be more than one team), all math team members participate in the practices and meets. Those not on an official team for a meet will participate as alternates; and their results will count toward their individual scores. I will select the official team members before each meet based on previous performances and practice attendance.

PRACTICE
PRACTICE
Math Team practices in-person from 4:00 to 5:00 every Monday. On days we have a meet, there will not be practice. We review problems and topics for upcoming meets so it is important to attend each practice. Most of these topics are addressed at a different time in your math class or not at all. Therefore, practice is valuable time spent.
