2025 Greyhound Baseball Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Ryan Hanlon (17th Season)

Coach Hanlon enters his 17th season as the head baseball Coach at Fosston High School in 2025.  Last year saw another successful season winning 17 games and just one win short of playing in the School's seventh Section Championship game.  In 2023, the Greyhounds captured the program's first State Championship.  Along the way, the Greyhounds racked up 24 wins, and won the Northwest Diamond and Pine-To-Prairie Conference Championship and their 4th Section Championship.  Coach Hanlon and his staff won Conference, Section and also MN Class A State Coach of the Year awards.  In Hanlon's first season ('09), he guided the Greyhound Baseball Team to their first-ever Northwest Diamond Conference Championship, earning him and his staff NW Diamond coaching staff of the year and Pine-to-Prairie Conference coaches of the year.  The Greyhounds followed that up the next season ('10) with the program's first-ever Section Championship and State Tournament appearance.  In 2013, the Greyhounds won the PTP Conference for the third time in six seasons.  The 2017 campaign saw the Greyhounds garner a school record 24 wins, their fourth Conference Championship and their second trip to the State Tournament; this time capturing the Class A Consolation Championship.  The spring of '18 and '19 ended with the Greyhounds coming up just short of their 3rd State Tournament appearance, losing in the Section 8A Championship game both years.  However, the Greyhounds captured the program's fifth Conference Crown (08, 09, 13, 17, 19) during the 2019 season.   The Greyhounds lost the 2020 season due to COVID, but made it back to the Section Championship game in 2021 where they would win their 3rd Section 8A Championship.  The 2022 season saw one of the most successful seasons in program history with the Greyhounds going 18-3 and winning their sixth Conference Championship.  The Greyhounds are 244-92 (.726) since Hanlon took over the program back in 2009.  Prior to taking over the baseball program, he was the assistant coach for Greyhound Fastpitch Softball Team from 2006 to 2008. Hanlon also served as an assistant football coach from 2004 to 2013, helping guide the Greyhounds to their first-ever state tournament appearance and back-to-back state tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009 as well as a state semifinalist in 2009.

During the summer Hanlon is the head coach of the American Legion baseball team since 2006 and head Babe Ruth baseball coach since 2002.  In 2008, the Babe Ruth team qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in program history after winning the District Championship and they followed that up with a return trip in 2010, 2012 and again in the summer of 2015.  The Fosston Babe Ruth team won the District Championship again in 2018, 2019 and 2021.  In the summer of 2024 the Fosston American Legion Baseball team won it's first ever District Championship and advanced to the State Tournament where they would go 2-1 and finish in 3rd place.  Hanlon, along with other volunteers, was instrumental in getting the Cal Ripken program started in 2014 and coaches that team during the summer as well.  Coach Hanlon is the Activities Director for the Fosston Public Schools. 

Assistant Coach:  Mike Ofstedal (15th Season)

Coach Ofstedal enters his 15th season alongside Coach Hanlon in the Greyhound dugout in 2025.  Coach Ofstedal spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach from 2010-2019 and returned to the program in 2020 after a one-year hiatus (2019).  Coach Ofstedal returns to the program in charge of the Greyhound pitchers.  In his first season, he helped lead the Greyhounds to their first-ever Section Championship and State Tournament appearance.  The 2013 season saw the Greyhounds win their 3rd Conference Championship.  In 2017, Ofstedal was part of the most successful season in program history; 24 wins, the program's fourth Conference Championship, a Section Championship and a Class A Consolation Championship.  Ofstedal saw one of his pitchers (Brett Sundquist) throw a Perfect Game in the State Tournament in 2017.  The Greyhounds have had five no-hitters under the tutelage of Coach Ofstedal.  He helped guide the Greyhounds to back to the Section 8A Championship game for the third time in his career in 2018 this time finishing runner-up after winning the first two.  In 2021, Coach Ofstedal helped guide the Greyhounds to their 3rd State Tournament appearance in school history and they followed that up with a Conference Championship in 2022.  In 2023 Ofstedal's pitchers led the Greyhounds to the State Tournament for the 4th time in school history and capped the year by winning the program's first-ever State Championship!  Ofstedal has also coached football and girls basketball in his time in Fosston.  He was an assistant coach for the '05 and '06 Section Champion Girls Basketball teams including a Runner-up finish at the State Tournament in 2005.  Ofstedal took over the Girls Basketball program in '07 and was the head coach from 2007-2011.  Ofstedal teaches biology and College Biology at Fosston High School. 

Assistant Coach: Brad Norland (9th Season)

Coach Norland enters his ninth season with the Greyhound Baseball Program.  Norland has helped guide the Greyhounds to Section 8A Championship game in five of the first eight seasons he has been on the staff.  In his first season, he helped lead the Greyhounds to their fourth Conference Championship, a school record in wins (24), a Section 8A Championship and the Class A Consolation Championship at the 2017 State Baseball Tournament.  In 2018 and 2019 Norland helped the Greyhounds to back-to-back Section 8A Runner-Up finishes and the program's fifth Conference Title.  In 2021 Norland helped guide the Greyhounds back to the state tournament for the second time in his career and the third time in the program's history.  In 2022, the Greyhounds posted an 18-3 record winning their sixth Conference Crown in their program's history.  Of course in 2023, Norland was part of the program's first State Championship.  The Greyhounds have posted a 134-39 record since Norland joined the program in 2017.  Norland is the team's first base coach and also works closely with the JV program.  Before joining the Greyhound Baseball Staff in 2017, Norland spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the East Polk Northstar Softball Team.  Norland is no stranger to the Fosston Baseball Program, Norland also helped get the Cal Ripken program started in Fosston back in 2014 and has volunteered with that program and the Babe Ruth Team.  He is an assistant coach and first base coach for the Fosston American Legion teams during the summer.  Coach Norland is a Lieutenant for the Minnesota State Patrol. 

Assistant Coach: Jesse Sather (8th Season)

Coach Sather begins his eighth season with the Greyhound Baseball Program in 2025.  Sather spent his first season helping Coach Gutterud with the Greyhound Junior High team, before moving up to help the varsity and JV in 2019.  Sather helped lead the Greyhounds to their fifth Conference Championship and a Section 8A Runner-up finish in 2019.  In 2021, Sather helped lead the Greyhound baseball program to the State Tournament as an assistant Coach, something he had accomplished as a player in 2017.  In 2021 and 2023 he helped lead the Greyhounds back to the State Tournament, which they won the Championship in 2023.  Sather is no stranger to the Greyhound Baseball Program, having spent 4 years in the starting lineup for Coach Hanlon's Greyhounds from 2014-2017.  Sather was 3-time All-Conference Selection, led the Greyhounds to their 2nd ever trip to the State Tournament and a Class A Consolation Championship in 2017 earning him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  Sather works with Coach Ofstedal and the Greyhound pitching staff as well as helping with the JV team.  Jesse finished his career in the top 8 in 9 different offensive stat categories in the Greyhound Baseball Record Book.  Coach Sather works for Manecke's Heating and Cooling in Fosston.

Assistant Coach: Dan Gutterud (22nd Season)

Coach Gutterud enters his 22nd season with the Greyhound Baseball Program in 2025.  Coach Gutterud, now an assistant coach for the Greyhounds, was the Head Coach for the Fosston Greyhounds from 2004-2008. He was the first Head Coach in the Program's History and very instrumental in not just getting the program up and running, but also laying a great foundation for the Greyhound Baseball Program. Coach Gutterud also took a 3-13 team in 2007 and went 14-5 in 2008 capturing the program's first-ever Pine-to-Prairie Conference Championship and earning him Coach of the Year in the Pine-to-Prairie Conference.  Gutterud and the Greyhounds compiled 26 wins in the first 4 years of the program's existence and in 2008 won the school's first Sub-Section Championship.  Currently, he is the Jr. High Baseball Coach for the Greyhounds and his program is one of the main reasons for the success of the Greyhound  Varsity baseball program.  Gutterud has been an assistant track, basketball and football coach in his time at Fosston as well as a former American Legion and Babe Ruth Baseball Coach.  Besides helping orchestrate the start of the FHS Greyhound baseball team, Gutterud started the Babe Ruth Baseball program and also was a part of getting the Cal Ripken program up and running in 2014.  Coach Gutterud is currently the STEM Teacher at Magelssen Elementary in Fosston.
