Parent Help
How do you help, you ask? Here are some tried and true ideas.
Use an "ask-before-tell" approach with your child.
With this approach, parents ASK the child to explain what they have done so far.
In this conversation, a child may self correct his mistake or it will help the parent identify what exactly the child is struggling with in the problem.
Ask good questions while your child is working. Here's some guiding questions for you.
What do you need to figure out? What is the problem about?
What words are confusing? What words are familiar?
Did you solve problems like this one in class today?
What have you tried so far? What else can you try?
Can you make a drawing or chart to help you think about the problem?
Does your answer make sense?
Is there more than one answer?
What math words or steps do you use in class?
