Charter member. Bill played football, hockey and baseball in high school, graduating in 1975 after serving as captain of the Grand Rapids High School's first state hockey championship team. An All- American defenseman for the University of Minnesota which captured the NCAA championship in 1976 and 1979. A member of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Olympic hockey champions, Bill played pro hockey for four years. Dr. Baker is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Washington University, St. Louis. Vocation: dental surgeon.

Chater member. Lettered in football and wrestling in high school, graduating in 1963. He won the Region 7 wrestling championship and placed fourth at 133 pounds in the state tourney in 1963. Kamman won the Big Ten championship for the University of Michigan in 1965 and 1967 and he won the NCAA championship in 1967. As a Marine, he won the All-Marine and All-Navy titles in 1969 and 1970. Kamman is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Pepperdine University Law School and Golden Gate University. Vocation: government tax attorney.

Charter member. Played hockey and baseball in high school, graduating in 1978. He was a goalie on the 1976 state hockey championship team and a pitcher/third baseman on the 1978 state baseball championship team. His five year high school pitching record was 36 wins and 4 losses with a 0.72 earned run average. He was state amateur player of the year in 1978. Athlete and graduate of the University of Minnesota, Jetland was on the 1979 NCAA hockey championship team. Vocation: business.

Charter member. Played football, basketball and baseball in high school, graduating in 1913. His 1913 basketball team was the first Grand Rapids high school team in a state tournament. An ardent fan and backer, Benton was on the Legion Baseball Committee for over 30 years and helped to build the Legion Field Complex. He was a graduate of the St. Paul College of Law. Vocation: law

Played both track and football for Northwestern University where he received his doctoral degrees. Charter member. One of the area's finest amateur women golfers, Joan graduated from high school in 1951 and has won more than 40 amateur golf tournaments to date. Joan also competed in basketball and was MVP for the Phoenix Westerners in 1961, competing for them until 1969. Joan was invited to the 1966 U.S Olympic women's basketball tryouts. Dr. Richardson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University. Vocation: math professor.

Charter member. Ray was high school captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams, graduating in 1962. One of the all-time leading basketball scorers at Grand Rapids High School, Ray received All-State and All-American honorable mention recognition. He was named to the Junior College Hall of Fame in 1976 for competing at a high level four sports at Itasca Community College. Ray is a graduate of the University of North Dakota where he was an All-Conference linebacker. Vocation: education and coaching.

Mr. Curran was an educator in the Grand Rapids School district from 1940 to 1942 and again from 1950 through 1968. A physical education teacher, Mr. Curran initiated the interscholastic gymnastics and wrestling teams and also coached baseball and track. Mr. Curran's 1957 American Legion Baseball team played in the state Legion tournament. The 1958 high school baseball team with a 21-1 record, finished in third place in the state high school tournament. Deceased 1968.

Mr. Kellin, a 1978 Grand Rapids High School graduate, played high school football, basketball, and baseball, serving as co-captain in both football and basketball. He was named to Iron Range All- Conference football and basketball teams, the WCCO Radio Prep Parade All-State Football team, and co-captained the Outstate team in the Minnesota Shrine All Star Football game his senior year. Kevin also played on the 1978 state high school baseball championship team as a first baseman and pitcher. He is a four-year "M" Club letterwinner in football at the University of Minnesota where he was a Henry L Williams Academic/Athletic Scholarship recipient. Mr. Kellin played professional football in the USFL for the Washington Federals and the Orlando Renegades and in the NFL for the Tampa Buccaneers in 1986-88.

Mr. Malmquist was a 1949 Grand Rapids High School graduate where he played football, basketball, and baseball, earning All-Iron Range conference recognition in all three sports. Jim graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1953 where he had earned all-conference honors in football and played on three MIAC conference championship teams. Jim was inducted to the Gustavus Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Mr. Malmquist served as an educator and coach at Starbuck and Hibbing High Schools, Hibbing Junior College, head hockey and assistant football coach at Gustavus Adolphus College, and head football coach at Texas Lutheran College, Augstana College, and Bemidji State University. Since 1974, Jim as been athletic director at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Mr. Powers graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1934 where he participated in football, basketball, and track and was named All- Range quarterback in football and guard in basketball his senior year. Bill also played American Legion baseball from 1932 to 1937. He attended Macalester College, lettering in football and basketball, from 1935 through 1937. Mr. Powers helped organize fast-pitch softball leagues in Grand Rapids in 1946 and was a player-manager for Mills Lumber team 1946 through 1957. Bill helped organize the Grand Rapids Sports Boosters Club in 1968 and has served over fifteen years as member of the Independent School District #318 Board of Education.

Mr. Anderson is a 1949 graduate of Grand Rapids High School were he earned three letters in football and track and two letters in baseball and basketball. Jerry was named to the All Iron Range Conference football team in 1948 and basketball in 1949, leading the basketball team in scoring and rebounding in 1949. In the 1949 Itasca County Track Meet, he placed first in the 100- yard dash, 200-yard dash, and shot put; tied for first in the high jump; was second in the discus; and anchored a second-place finish for the relay team. Jerry graduated from Indiana University where he had a football scholarship. He was a starting defensive end on the Indiana University football team, lettering in 1951 and 1952.

Mr. Kauppi, often referred to as "The Father of Grand Rapids Hockey," started his hockey career in Eveleth where he played high school hockey and junior college hockey. He graduated from St. Cloud Teachers College where he played on the team which won the State AAU Senior Hockey championship. Cliff came to Grand Rapids in 1942 to teach junior high industrial arts and, during his first year, he put together the first Grand Rapids High School hockey team. In 1949, Cliff became the first coach of the first Grand Rapids High School hockey team, a position he held through 1955. In 1957, he was chosen as one of " The Select 100 in Minnesota Sports" as part of the Minnesota Centennial Celebration. Cliff has remained active in Grand Rapids hockey by being involved in the IRA Area construction, serving in the IRA Board of directors and taking an active role in the area youth hockey programs.

Mr. Streetar, a 1955 Grand Rapids High School graduate, earned three letters each in baseball, basketball, football, and track during his high school career. Bob graduated from St. Cloud State University where he lettered in baseball and basketball. Playing on the Saint Cloud team which won the National NAIA Basketball championship, he was named to the All Tournament and All Conference teams. After college, Bob signed with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization and played in their minor league system. In 1963, Bob returned to Grand Rapids as a high school mathematics teacher and served as head baseball, basketball, and gymnastics coach. His high school baseball teams have won twelve region championships and two state championship (in 1978 and 1984). Bob also coached the American Legion Baseball team to nine district titles and the State American Legion Baseball championship 1975. Awarded the Dick Seibert Baseball Award in 1989, Bob has also been named Minnesota Baseball Coach of the Year and has served as president of the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Mr. Warner graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1953, having earned four letters in baseball, three letters in basketball and two letters in football during his high school career lefty was named All Iron Range Conference in both basketball and football. A graduate of Minnesota- Duluth, Lefty played four years of college football, starting every game and averaging 55 minutes of playing time per game as an offensive halfback and defensive safety. He was twice named to the All Conference Team and was voted the most valuable player for two years. Lefty was the captain of his team and received the Anderson-Dahl Student Athlete Award in his Senior year at UMD.

Dr. Carter, a 1975 Grand Rapids High School graduate, participated in high school football and slalom skiing. A two-year letter winner in football, during his senior year he was team co-captain and named to the All Iron Range Conference team (center), All Tri-State team and WCOO All State team. Dr. Cater was the recipient of the Webb LeBau Award and participated in the 1975 Shrine All Star Game. In high school slalom skiing, Dr. Carter was a five-year letter winner, participating in three state tournaments. During his senior year, he was team captain, winning the 1975 region title and state championship. Dr. Carter also finished as the overall runner-up in the 1975 United States Ski Association Central Division championship and participated on the Central USSA Junior National Team.
A graduate of Hamline University, Dr. Carter earned four letters in college football, being named Honorable Mention Center his senior year. Dr. Carter graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1983.

Mr. Mattson, a 1962 Grand Rapids High School graduate participated in football, wrestling and track. A three-year starter and letter winner in football, Mr. Mattson was co-captain of an undefeated team his senior year, leading the Iron Range Conference in individual scoring. Norm was named to the All Iron Range conference and WCCO Radio All State team in 1960. In wrestling, Norm was a four-year letter winner and starter . As a junior, Norm placed second in the state and was the 175-lb. state champion the next year. As a senior co-captain, he helped lead the Grand Rapids High School wrestling team to the state runner-up title in 1961. In track, Norm set the school's 100-yard dash record at 10.3 seconds-- a record which stood for 13 years. Norm attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he played football for two years before injuries shortened his career.

Mr. Mortenson, a 1965 Grand Rapids High School graduate, participated in football and wrestling. A four-year high school letter winner in football, was named team captain and most valuable player in 1964 and was named to the All Iron Range Conference Team in 1963 and 1964 and to the All State Team, in 1964. Marv was also a four-year letter winner in high school wrestling, team captain in 1965, Indian Invitational Tourney runner-up in 1962 and 1963 champion in 1964 and 1965. In Region 7 individual wrestling tournaments, Marv was runner-up in 1962 and region championship the next three years. As a senior, Marv was undefeated with a 22-0 record, culminating his high school wrestling career with the 1965 state heavyweight championship.
Mr. Mortenson is a graduate of North Dakota State University where he lettered in football in 1968 and 1969 and was named All-Conference Offensive Tackle and received NCAA Division II All-American honors in 1969. NDSU was undefeated and became NCAA Division Division II national champions in 1968 at the Pecan Bowl and 1969 at the Camellia Bowl. Marv also participated in college wrestling, lettering in 1969 and also in 1970 when he placed second in the conference tournament and led his team in falls. Mr. Mortenson was inducted into the North Dakota State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.

Mr. Norvard, a native of Mason City, Iowa. was a 1954 graduate of the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Mr. Norvard was the Big Ten Wrestling Champion in 1952, 1953 and 1954, named the tournaments outstanding wrestler in 1953, and captain 1953 and 1954 teams. Skip was the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) champion in his weight class in 1953 and 1954.
Over a 25- year coaching career at Postville, Iowa; Drake University and Grand Rapids High School, Skip's record was 188-59-3 in dual meet competition. While at Grand Rapids, his teams won 13 region titles and had five individual state champions. Mr. Norvard was inducted into the National amateur wrestling Hall of Fame, and Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Minnesota High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. Mr. Norvard is deceased.

Mr. Beier, a 1962 Grand Rapids High School graduate, participated in football and wrestling. A four-year letter winner participated in football with a team that won the Iron Range Conference championships of 1960 and 1961, he was named to the honorable mention team as a junior and the all-conference team as a senior. Jerry was one of the co-captains of the 1961 team.
Jerry only wrestled during his junior and senior years, compiling a career record of 38 wins and 3 losses. He was Region 7 champion in 1961 and 1962, state third-place winner in 1961 and state champion in 1962 at 165 pounds. Jerry served as a captain of the 1961-62 wrestling team and was inducted into the Grand Rapids Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1986.

Mr. Beier, a 1962 Grand Rapids High School graduate, participated in football and wrestling. A four-year letter winner in football with a team that won the Iron Range Conference championships of 1960 and 1961, he was one of the co-captains of the 1961 team.
Jim only wrestled during his junior, and senior year, compiling a career record of 41 wins and 1 loss. He was Region 7 champion in 1961 and 1962, state runner-up in 1961 (his only career loss was in these state finals) and state champion in1962 at 154 pounds. Jim was named Athlete of the Year in 1962 and was inducted into the Grand Rapids Hall of fame in 1986.

Ms. Fitzgerland, a 1985 Grand Rapids High School graduate, participated in volleyball and track, placing 2nd in the state track meet in the shot put in 1985. Patti attended Itasca Community College where she earned all-conference honors in volleyball (1986) and softball (1987) and was captain of the 1986 volleyball team, as well as earning academic honors in 1986 and 1987.
Patti is a graduate of Bemidji State University where she earned additional honors in track; NAIA All-America team, both in indoor and outdoor, in 1988, 1989, and 1990; All-Conference, both indoor and outdoor, in 1988 and 1990; captain of the track team 1989-90

Mr. Kleinendorst, a 1978 Grand Rapids High School graduate participated in football, cross-country running, and hockey. As a hockey player, Scot played on the 1973 PeeWee and 1974 Bantam MAHA state championship teams; the 1976, 1977, and 1978 Region 7 championship team, the 1977 state third- place team, and the 1978 state-second place team while also serving as the team captain. He received All-IRC and All-State honors during his senior year. Scot attended Providence College where he earned four letters in hockey, was named team captain his senior year, was named to the All-East team 1981-82 and participated in the World Hockey Championships in 1982, in Helsinki.
Scot was drafted by the New York Rangers in the fifth round in 1981 and, during his professional career, he played 277 regular season games and 26 play-off games in the National Hockey League: 1982-84 for the New York Rangers, 1984-89 for the Hartford Whalers (assistant captain 1987-88) and for the Washington Capitals in 1989-90. Scot was a member of the Hartford Whalers Adams Division championship team in 1986.

Mr. McDonald, a graduate of Eveleth High School, moved to Grand Rapids in 1946 where he has been a volunteer for youth activities up to the present time. Along with Boy Scouts, VFW youth activities and Knights of Columbus, Bill has contributed thousands of hours to youth hockey. He was instrumental in the buildings of the arena in the early 1960's and the expansion in the early 1980's. Bill served as a president for 10 years, treasurer for 6 years, and director for 4 years on the Grand Rapids Amateur Hockey Association.
In addition to local involvement, Bill has been North MAHA coordinator for 10 years, MAHA District #13 director for 3 years and secretary/treasurer of the state Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association since 1984. Past awards include Minnesota Youth Hockey Leadership Award in 1991 and the William Thayer Tutt Award in 1992.

Mr. David Allen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1976 and went on to complete his education at Iowa State University.
During high school, Mr. Allen participated in football and wrestling. He joined the varsity football team as a 9th grader. In his junior year season, he led the team to a third place finish in the IRC and was named all-state as a fullback. During his senior year, the team placed second in the IRC and Dave received all-state honors as a linebacker.
Wrestling on the varsity team as a 7th grader, Dave finished third in the region tournament. He won region wrestling championships during is sophomore, junior and senior years, finishing third in the state as a senior. Dave was on the national championship team in his freshman year at Iowa State University, he finished third in both the Big Eight and in the national tournament as a sophomore, and was Big Eight Conference champion and second in the nation as a junior. Dave was a captain of the Iowa State U. wrestling team during both his junior and senior years and again won the Big Eight Conference as a senior.
Mr. Allen is currently a teacher and coach in Alaska.

Mr. Myron Nielsen, a graduate of Tyler (MN) High School and Gustavus Adolphus College, was a Grand Rapids High School teacher and coach from 1954 to 1982.
During his high school years, he participated in football as a halfback, was an all-district guard in basketball and a sprinter in track where he ran the 100-yard dash in 10.0 seconds and the 220 in 22.8 seconds. His longest jump reached 20 feet, 9 inches. While at Gustavus, he was a halfback on three football teams, one of which won the 1940 conference championship.
At Grand Rapids High School, Mr. Nielsen began his coaching career as an assistant coach in football, basketball and track. He was head track coach from 1955 to 1982, was named Minnesota state Track Coach of the Year. Mr. Nielsen also served for many years as head boys' and girls' cross country running coach and was head girls' basketball coach from 1977 to 1982, with his teams earning region runner up status twice.
Along with teaching and coaching three sports, Mr. Nielsen was an active leader and volunteer worker in his church and community; in retirement, he continues his service in that capacity.

Mr. John Rothstein is a 1975 Grand Rapids High School graduate. As a high school freshman, he played on the first Grand Rapids hockey team to qualify for the state tournament; the year was 1972 and the team was the state runner up. John played as a junior on the state third-place team and captained the 1975 state championship team in his senior year. During his high school career, he scored 90 goals and added 70 assist. John also participated in tennis while in high school, serving as team captain is senior year.
Mr. Rothstein continued his hockey career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he was a four-year letterman. His hockey talents were recognized by the World Hockey Association when he was the youngest player to ever be drafted at that time. He was further recognized by the Chicago Blackhawks when they named him as a draft choice in his college freshman year.
Mr. Rothstein, a graduate of UMD, earned a master's degree in business from the University of Notre Dame and returned to the Grand Rapids area as a businessman, instructor at Itasca Community College, head hockey coach at ICC and community leader.

Mr. Glen Swenson, a graduate of Grand Rapids High School and St. Olaf College, continued his education at the University of Minnesota where he earned a master's degree in physical education and at Mankato State University where he earned a specialist's degree.
After high school, Mr. Swenson enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he played freshman football. His college career was interrupted by military service, after which he returned to St. Olaf and played football and hockey.
Mr. Swenson served as an assistant football coach as the head coach or assistant in wrestling for twenty-two years at Grand Rapids High School. He was well-known as an outstanding physical education teacher, having tremendous concern for his students. His influence caused countless young men to stay in school, participate in athletics, become good students and mature into productive leaders and citizens.
Mr. Swenson has been very active Grand Rapids area organizations, particularly Lions' Club and his church. He served as president of the Minnesota High School Wrestling Coaches' Association and has been elected to the Grand Rapids Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Minnesota State Wrestling Coaches' Hall of Fame.

Mr. Jack Buckley, a graduate of Grand Rapids High School, earned high school athletic letters in basketball, football and track & field.
Mr. Buckley played football for the United State Marine Corps prior to attending Bemidji State College. While at Bemidji State, he was a running back and kicker on the football team, earning the Glen Calligan Award as the Most Valuable Player in the conference. He is a member of the Bemidji State University Athletic Hall of Fame.
His career as an educator included teaching and coaching baseball, football, basketball, wrestling and track & field at Eagle Bend, MN; Fergus Falls MN; and several California schools. After retiring as principal of the Owatonna State School, Mr. Buckely returned to Grand Rapids, volunteering as an assistant coach in football and track and as an instructor in the weight room. During his time, Jack Buckely earned the respect and love of the athletes and his peer coaches.

Mr. Noble Hall. a graduate of Tower (MN) High School, attended Virginia Junior College and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1941. While at Gustavus, Mr. Hall participated in baseball, football and hockey. He and his teammates were conference champions in all three sports.
Mr. Hall taught and coached at Hinkley and Fergus Falls prior to the interruption of his career by military service from 1943 to 1946. He came to Grand Rapids as a mathematics teacher in 1946 and was named head football coach in 1947. Mr. Hall also served as head coach in baseball and boy's basketball for a time during his career at Grand Rapids High School. During his twenty-four years as head football coach, he had a record of 113 wins, 57 losses, and 7 ties. His team won Iron Range Conference Champions in 1948, 1949, 1952, 1960, 1961, 1968, and 1970.

Mr. Don Lucia graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1977, having earned ten athletic letters: three each in football and hockey and four in tennis. As a football player, he was named to the all-conference teams in 1975 and 1976, all-state team in 1976, and was selected to play in the 1976 State Shrine Game. In hockey, Don played in four state tournaments where he and his teammates finished in third place in 1974 and 1977 and were state championships in 1975 and 1976. During his senior year in high school, Don was captain of the hockey team and co-captain of the football and tennis teams.
Mr. Lucia graduated from the University of North Dakota where he earned four letters in hockey and was named co-captain of the hockey team for his senior year. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers but chose not to play professional hockey.
Mr. Lucia's coaching career to date includes six years at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks with a record of 101-99-10 and three years at Colorado College with a record of 86-27-10. At Colorado College, his team have won three consecutive WCHA championships and the 1996 team was runner-up in the NCAA tournament. Mr. Lucia was named National Coach of the Year in 1994 and WCHA Coach of the of year in 1994 and 1996.

Mr. John Bymark graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1952. During his high school career, Mr. Bymark was considered one of the premier athletes on the Iron Range. The multi-sport athlete achieved All Conference honors in football.
Mr. Bymark attended UMD where he came the only athlete in the school's history to letter in three sports- football, hockey, and track. John was named to the Football All Conference Team for two years and was selected as the top senior athlete at UMD. in 1961, following his college career, John was selected to the U.S National Hockey Team.
Mr. Bymark continued to be involved in athletics as an amateur. For two decades, John was recognized statewide as one of the premier fast-pitch football catchers in Minnesota. John organized and served as a player-coach of the nationally acclaimed Grand Rapids Bruins Hockey Team.
Mr. Bymark's lifelong commitment to athletics included serving as an official in volleyball, football, and hockey. John participated in a record twenty-two Minnesota State Hockey Tournaments as an official. During the 1980's, John was a top official in the WCHA and served as Director of Officials for the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association. Most recently, John has been a professional hockey scout for the Los Angeles Kings.
Mr. Bymark's dedication to young people an the future of athletics in Grand Rapids is represented by his founding of the Grand Rapids Youth Football league as a leader in organizing the construction of the IRA Civic Center.

Mr. Ken Hickman started with the Grand Rapids Herlad-Review as news editor in 1947. He retired in 1984 after 37 years as an editor, columinst and photographer. He still writes the "Shooting the Rapids" column he started in 1949. He wrote "Up in This Neck of the Woods" column from mid 1947 to 1966.
Mr. Hickman covered all sports in the Itasca Country area, including football, basketball, hockey, baseball, track, wrestling and gymnastics. He covered state tournaments in hockey, wrestling and baseball. He helped organize the Itasca Recreation Association, Grand Rapids Sports Booster and Grand Rapids High School Letterwinners Banquet.
Mr. Hickman helped promote Grand Rapids training center for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. He covered two college all-star games with the Eagles in Chicago. He wrote sports and outdoors columns and covered each of the 48 Pike for Vets dinners.
He was the first nightly sportscast afterKBZY (now KOZY) radio was organized in 1947. He broadcast the first football and basketball games for Grand Rapids High School and broadcast District 28 Basketball Tournament at Hibbing for years. He was public adress announcer for softball games in the summers of 1947 and 1948.

Mr. Jon Casey graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1980. Jon excelled at all levels of hockey in which he participated. Jon was a member of the Grand Rapids hockey team that went to state in 1979 and 1980, leading Grand Rapids to the State Championship in 1980.
A four year standout at the University of North Dakota, Mr. Casey was named a WCHA First Team All Star in 1982, 1984, and Second Team All Star in 1983. His college career record was 52-20-4 with a 2.89 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. The Sioux were NCAA Champions his sophomore year. Jon culminated his college career by being named in All American his senior year.
Mr. Casey's professional career spanned 15 years in 1985, he was named to the American Hockey League's First All Star Team and was named top goaltender of the AHL while playing for Baltimore. Mr. Casey played for the Minnesota North Stars, the Boston Bruins and the Saint Louis Blues during 12 seasons in the National Hockey League, appearing in 425 regular season and 66 playoff games. During his NHL career, Jon had a 170-157-55 record, posting 16 shutouts and a 3.21 goals against average.
Jon led the North Stars to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1991, starting all 23 playoff games and posting a 16-7 record. In 1993, Mr. Casey was a member of the National Hockey League All Star Team.

Ms. Jennifer Lynn Koprowski graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1988. In the history of Grand Rapids Swimming, Jen was recognized as the best female swimmer. Jen qualified for the State Swim Meet four consecutive years. She was selected to the All State Swim Team on three occasions and was a National High School All American Honorable Mention selection for two years. Jen set numerous Grand Rapids High School and Section 7 records that are still intact twelve years later.
While on a Division l swimming scholarship at the University of Hawaii, Jennifer was a four year letter, winner, a Big West Conference Champion in the 50 Yard Freestyle her junior and senior year. Big West All Conference performer, and a qualifier for the Senior Nationals as a junior in two events.
In 1993, Jennifer graduated from the University of Hawaii. She stayed involved with swimming while finishing her studies at the University by coaching at LaPietra High School. She continued coaching while teaching at St. Andrews Priory School in Honolulu. Jennifer's love of young people and the outdoors brought her back to this area in the summers to work at a Lake of the Woods wilderness camp.
Jennifer died, tragically, in July of 1997. Her legacy of dedication, love for swimming, zest for life and willingness to strive for excellence will always be with us.

Ed Gregerson, a member of the Deer River High School class of 1937, graduated from Duluth State Teachers College (University of Minnesota-Duluth) in 1941. Mr. Gregerson began teaching in the Grand Rapids school system in 1941. His career was interrupted by world War ll when he served his country in the United States Navy. Upon his return to teaching in Grand Rapids, he also coached at the junior high level and helped schedule and administer athletic events as a volunteer. He was officially named Athletic Director for the 1947-1978 school year and help that position when retiring in 1949.
During is tenure as Athletic Director, Grand Rapids High School added ten boys sports and nine girls sports. He also developed the priority system for season and tournament hockey tickets which is still used today. Mr. Gregerson served on the District 28 and Region 7 Committees, is a life member of the Minnesota Athletic Directors Association and the Minnesota State Coaches Associations. Mr. Gregerson was named Region 7 Athletic Director of the Year three times.

Mr. Doug Bolstorff graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1949. Mr. Bolstorff's remarkable athletic career began by being cut from the high school basketball team in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. However, through determination , and tremendous work ethic and perseverance, Doug went on to play basketball at the University of Minnesota and became the only Grand Rapids High School graduate to be drafted by the NBA.
Mr. Bolstorff's University of Minnesota basketball career included lettering three years and startint over 20 games. Dough graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science and later obtained his Masters Degree in Physical Education. Doug continued to play basketball while serving in the Army. He was selected to the All Army Team Olympic Trials in 1956. In 1957, the Detroit Pistons selected Doug in the 5th round of the National Basketball Accociation draft. Doug played for one season. His professional career also included playing for Baltimore City League team and Williamsport in the Eastern League.
Since 1959, Doug has been a Professor of Physical Education at Macalester College. At Macalester, Doug served as head coach in several sports: Basketball- 25 years, Track- 27 years, Cross Country- 28 years, and Baseball- 2 years. Doug was selected Minnesota NAIA Basketball Coach of the Year on three occasions, his cross country won six MIAC titles, and his track teams clamied nine MIAC championships with Doug being named Region Coach of the Year.

Chris Fulton graduated from Grand Rapids in 1977. Chris was the region gymnastics champion in five events his senior year. He participated in five MSHSL State Gymnastics Tournaments, placing fourth in the all-around and third on parallel bars his senior year. Chris also excelled in diving, becoming the first Grand Rapids swimmer/diver to participate in the MSHSL State Diving Championships.
Chris continued to compete in gymnastics at the United States Military Academy and was selected as captain in 1980-81. The Army awarded hi the MG William Louis Bell Jr. Memorial Award for Athletic Leadership. Chris graduated from West Point with a degree in engineering and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1981. After graduation, Chris served as an assistant gymnastics coach for one year at West Point. Today, Chris often serves as the Officer Representative for the Army Gymnastics Team.
Chris received a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Indiana University and from 1991-1994 served as an Assistant Professor at West Point. In 1998, Chris was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and was a Battalion Commander from 1999-2002. Currently, Lt. Colonel Fulton is attending the Army's War College.

Kurt Greniger was on his way to an outstanding high school career. Kurt had claimed a National Freestyle Wrestling Title at the age of 12 and made the varsity wrestling team as a ninth grader. Life changed, at the age of fifteen, when Kurt was paralyzed from the waist down, in the State AAU Wrestling Championships. Kurt's incredible perseverance launched him on a career that serves as an inspirational for all. He became an accomplished swimmer and served as wrestling manager from 1977 until graduating in 1979. After high school, he joined the Rolling Gophers Wheelchair Competition Team, winning two golds and two silver medals in swimming at the National Wheelchair Championships.
Kurt attended Southwest State graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. His wheelchair basketball team won two NCAA titles with Kurt being selected as the 1986 MVP. Kurt participated for the Jr. Olympics Basketball Wheelchair Team at the World Cup Tournament. He was a member, from 1987-89, of the nationally ranked Sioux Falls Wheelers from 1990-2000 wit the Courage Rolling Timberwolves and in international competitions wit USA World Cup Team. Kurt has participated in 20 marathons; played with five time National Champions, Courage Rolling Timberwolves Softball Team; presently is player/manger and executive director of the Minnesota Blaze Baseball Team. Kurt has earned four gold, a silver, and three bronze medals at the National Track Champions and is the record holder in the 1500 meters.
Kurt is employed by United Defense LP as a Senior Reliability Engineer. Kurt started a cable TV show called "Diversability" that focuses on people with disabilities; founded Midwest Region Wheelchair Sports in 2000; along with organizing community and school athletic workshops for people with disabilities.

Kurt Kleinendorst graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1979. He excelled at all levels of youth and high school hockey during the era when the Indian's hockey program was at its zenith. He earned All-State Honors in 1978 and 1979, and participated in the State Tournament both of those years. The 1979 team was only Grand Rapids team to ever go through the regular season without a loss.
Mr. Kleinendorst was a 4 year standout a Providence College. He was the ECAC Tournament MVP in 1981 and leading scorer for the EAC as a junior and a senior. He played for Team USA in the World Championship in Finland his junior year. Kurt capped his college career in 1982-83 by earning All American honors, being named ECAC Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Baker Award. At that time he was the leading all-time career goal scorer, and the #2 career assist and total point leader for the Friars.
Kurt's professional coaching career began with 2 stints as coach and GM of the Raleigh Ice Caps. In 5 seasons. he reached the ECHL finals in 1994 and was Coach of the Year in 1992-93. He was assistant coach of the San Diego Gulls of the International League in 1994-95. In 1997, he was hired as a coach and GM of the Manchester (England) Storm. In 3 seasons, his team won the ISL Super League Championship once and finished 2nd twice. He was named Coach of the Year in 1998-99. Mr. Kleinendorst began his NHL coaching career in 2000 with the New Jersey Devils. The Devils reached the Stanley Cup Finals that season, coming one victory short of winning the cup for the 2nd straight year.

Kristin Ogle graduated from Grand Rapids at the top of her class in 1995. She was recognized for her numerous accomplishments both in and out of the classroom by being placed in the GRHS Hall of Fame. Kristin was a multi-sport star at Grand Rapids, serving as captain of her swimming team, basketball, and track teams. In swimming, Kristin was a former record holder in the 50 meter butterfly. Kristin excelled at track, winning the state championship in the discus as a junior and senior and finished as state runner up her sophomore year. While a student at Grand Rapids she was a representative to the MSHSL Student Advisory Committee.
Kristin went to Washington State graduating in 1999 with an honors degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition. Kristin completed in the discus, hammer, the 35 lb. weight throw and the shot put at Washington State. She was Division l PAC-10 Conference qualifier each year in the discus and hammer. Kristin was Washington State's former record holder in the hammer. Upon completion of her career, she was third on the all-time list in the hammer and seventh in the discus at Washington State. Kristin was selected to the PAC-10 All-American Team in 1966 & 1967. She was a lead member of the national champion Food Product Development Team and named Outstanding Senior in her Food Science Department.
Currently, Kristin is involved in research and development within the food industry. Kristin looks forward to pursuing a graduate degree and one day coaching high school sports.

Will Sarkela's remarkable thirty six year teaching, coaching and administrative career at Grand Rapids High School began in 1958 after graduating from BSU. Will served as a coach in football and basketball for nineteen years. For over twenty years Will was a top baseball umpire officiating district and region tournaments and the MSHSL State Tournament in 1972.
Mr. Sarkela was named District 318 Activities Director in 1979 and served in that capacity until retiring in 1994. Will as one of Minnesota's first Certified Athletic Administrators. Under Will's leadership, District 318 added and/or expanded several activity programs. Grand Rapids and Bigfork High Schools were widely respected throughout Minnesota after appearing in several state tournaments. Will's tireless efforts in promoting sportsmanship, respect for others, and dedication were reflected by our coaches and actives.
Mr. Sarkela's commitment to 'making things better for students' lead people to seek his leadership on numerous committees. Will was president of the Grand Rapids Rotary Club and chaired the Rotary Club's 'Honor Student Recognition Program'. Will was a member of the IRC Board of Directors; Chairman Section 7AAAA Football; Secretary/Treasurer Northern Lakes Football Conference; MSHSL Hockey Realignment and Athletic Advisory Committees. Currently, Will serves as Region 7AA Secretary/Treasurer, a post he has held since 1982.
Will has been recognized by his peers as Region 7AA Athletic Director of the year on two occasions 1987 and 1992. The Minnesota Athletic Directors Assn. honored Will by selecting him into the Minnesota Athletic Director's Hall of Fame in 1999.

Don "Doc" Carlson is being honored for his caring, devoted and tireless dedication as a volunteer athletic trainer for Grand Rapids athletic teams. "Doc" graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1960. He was a four year letter winner in hockey and served as a team captain in 1960.
Following high school, Don attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor in Science Degree in Physical Therapy. He has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1966.
Don has served his community well over the years. He is a past president of Grand Rapids Amateur Hockey Association, a 20 year member of the National Ski Patrol at Sugar Hills and Giants Ridge and served as an EMT volunteer for 13 years. He is a member and past president of the Cohasset Recreation Board and developed, mountains and grooms of the Bass Brook WMA cross country ski trail system. In 1973, Don began volunteering as the trainer for the Grand Rapids High school Hockey team and in 1980 added the football to his trainer duties.
Don was awarded in 1999 Distinguished Service Award by the Minnesota State Athletic Director's Association.

Dr. Michael G. Johnson graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1974. Mike was a member of the first high school hockey team to enter the state tournament in 1972. During his senior year, the hockey team once again made the state hockey tournament; and Mike played left wing on the Iron Range Conference’s leading line with John Rothstein and Mark DeCenzo.
Baseball was really Mike’s passion; and he played varsity baseball for four years, starting at catcher his final three years. Mike was captain of the team his senior year and helped lead the team to the state baseball tournament. Upon graduation, Mike received a full baseball scholarship to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. During his freshman and sophomore years, Mike was the designated hitter with the team making the NCAA Regionals in 1976. Mike batted fourth behind eventual Minnesota Twin and American League Rookie of the Year, John Castino. During the summer of 1976, Mike played in the Cape Cod Collegiate league for the Orleans Cardinals and was selected the team’s most valuable player and also finished second in the league in batting.
Upon college graduation in 1978, Mike had a short stint with the Minnesota Twins before returning to Rollins College graduate school where he received the Dean Weish Fellowship award and was also the graduate assistant baseball coach. He received his Masters in Business Administration in Community College. He coached baseball at ICC for 15 years recording 248 wins and 167 losses Mike also coached hockey at ICC with John Rothstein for five years and coached Grand Rapids VFW baseball teams for more than 10 years.
Mike was named the Director of College Services at ICC in 1990 and Dean of Students in 1995. In 2000, Mike earned his Doctorate from the University of Minnesota and was named Provost of ICC, a position he currently holds.

Jeff Nielsen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1990. During his high school career he was a member of three Grand Rapids Section 7 Boys Golf Championship Teams, and was also a member of the 1989 State Runner-up Boys Golf Team. Jeff was the school’s first state individual golf champion, winning that honor in 1988 and was also the state individual runner-up in boys golf in 1989. At the University of Minnesota, Jeff was a member of the golf team that played in the NCAA Championships in 1993 and 1994.
Jeff’s hockey career at Grand Rapids High School included playing on the Section 7 championship teams in 1988 and 1990. His career scoring total at GRHS was 55 goals and 53 assists.
Jeff received a full hockey scholarship to the University of Minnesota where he was co-captain of the 1994 team which played in the Final Four. In 1994 he was honored as the WCHA Student Athlete of the Year and was also Second Team Academic All American that season. As a Gopher, Jeff scored 75 goals and added 64 assists during his four year career.
In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Jeff was a fourth round selection, the 69th overall pick by the New York Rangers. He played three seasons in the American Hockey League with Binghamton and Cincinnati. In 1996 he played in the NHL with the New York Rangers, and with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks from 1997 through 2000. Jeff ended his professional hockey career playing for the Minnesota Wild during the 2000-01 season. Jeff played in 252 games in the NHL and totaled 20 goals and 27 assists during his career.

Sue Renner-Hartman graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1986. As a starter on the GRHS girls basketball team for four years, Sue served as a captain her senior year. Sue set a new school record for career points, accumulating 1,256 in her career. During her senior year, she set a new single game scoring record for both boys and girls 43 points and set records with 20 field goals in a game and 28 rebounds in a game. Sue's record-setting high school career also included most points scored in a season (483) and making 57 percent of her field goal attempts. She was named to the All Iron Range Conference Team three times, twice to the Duluth News Tribune All Area Team, the WCCO Radio All State Team and received an honorable mention to the USA Today All American Team.
In addition to her basketball accomplishments at GRHS, Sue was a member of the girls swim team during her eighth grade, freshman, sophomore and junior years. In 1982 she set a new pool record for the backstroke which she then broke in 1983 with a time of 1:05.10. She was also a member of a 200 meter medley relay team that set a new school record in 1982 and was a member of another relay team that broke that record with a time of 1:56.91 in 1984. Sue was a member of a record setting 400 meter freestyle relay team in 1983 with a time of 3:41.46. Sue participated in the girls state swim meet in 1982, 83, and 84.
Following graduation from GRHS, Sue received a full basketball scholarship to the University of Minnesota and became the first female Division l basketball player from Grand Rapids. Sue lettered all four years at the U of M. She played in 92 games during her Gopher career, starting 44 for them. She scored 456 career points, averaging 5.1 per game, with a field goal percentage of 50.2 percent. Sue tallied career totals of 189 rebounds- an average of 3.1 per game, 22 assists, 28 blocked shots and 47 steals.

Jon Rohloff graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1988. While at GRHS, he lettered in football as a junior and senior and was named to the All Northern Lakes Conference Team both seasons and was team captain his senior year. Jon’s high school hockey career included lettering three years, serving as alternate captain his senior year and playing in the state tournament his senior season. Jon was named to the All Iron Range Hockey Team and the Duluth News Tribune’s All Area Hockey team following his junior and senior years. He was also selected as a member of the 1988 Minneapolis Tribune’s All Tournament Hockey Team. In addition, Jon lettered in golf as a sophomore at GRHS.
Jon received a hockey scholarship to the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He was honored as Bulldog Rookie of the Year in 1988-89 and was invited to the U.S. Olympic Trials Camp in 1991. Jon received an honorable mention to the 1991-93 WCHA season title. Jon was an alternate captain for the 1991-92 and 1992-93 UMD teams and was named to the WCHA Second team in 1992-93.
Jon was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the ninth round of the NHL draft and was named the Providence Bruins’ Rookie of the Year following the 1993-94 season. He spent three years with the Bruins and finished his NHL career with 7 goals and 25 assists. Jon played on the U.S. National Team in the 1997 world Championships.

Mr. Tom Drazenovich graduated from Nashwauk High School in 1962. In High School he earned four letters in each sport, football, basketball and track. He was captain of his football and track teams. In football he scored 423 career points, and was All-Conference in 1959-60-61. In 1962, Tom was chosen to play in the 14th annual All-American High School game in Dallas, Texas at the Cotton Bowl. He scored a touchdown in the North’s victory over the South Team.
Tom received a full football scholarship to attend the University of Minnesota. He was on the football team from 1963-65; however, injuries did not allow game playing time. Tom transferred to University of Minnesota Duluth and graduated in 1967.
Tom’s teaching career at Grand Rapids High School from 1971-2001 included coaching football, basketball and track. In football he was an assistant until being named head coach for 1978 and 1979. His 1979 team finished as Section runner-up. Tom was the boys track head coach from 1984 through 1995. His teams whom the IRC meet three times, were Section 7AA runner-up twice and placed 4th at the 1995 MN State track meet.
Tom originated and established the curriculum in Personal Fitness and Strength Conditioning at GRHS. An indication of the love and esteem in which he was held by his student/athletes is the fact that the 1979 football team established a scholarship in his name.
Tom was inducted into the Nashwauk-Keewatin Hall of Fame in 2003. GRHS Hall of Fame 2006.

Ms. Erikka Grose graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1995.
Erikka participated in Volleyball, Basketball, and Track during her high school career. She was the leading scorer for the ninth grade team.
In track, Erikka holds the GRHS school shot put record with a throw of 44 feet 2 1/2 inches. She was Iron Range Conference champion and Region 7AA championship in 1994 and 1955 as well as state shot put runner-up in 1994 and the State Champion in 1995 in Class AA. She was also a point winner in the discus event and participated in 1955 True Track Team competition. During her senior year she served as a team captain.
During college Erikka was the North Shore Collaborative Faciliator and graduated from the University of Minnesota--Duluth in 1998. She continued her graduate work at St. Cloud State University with a 4.00 g.p.a.
Erikka began her teaching career as an English Teacher at Bigfork High School, coaching basketball, track, speech and debate. She participated in the Blandin Leadership Training program and served on the Effie City Council.

Mr. Gustaf (Gus) Hendrickson is a 1958 Eveleth Senior High School graduate who earned four letters in each of three sports: football, hockey and baseball. As a football player, he was named all-conference twice and in 1956, was 3rd in scoring with 10 touchdowns. Gus played on the Eveleth hockey team which placed 3rd in the state tournament and he was named to the State Tournament Team. In baseball, his batting average was from 340 to 420.
Gus received a full scholarship from Michigan State University to play hockey. At MSU he was given the President John H. Hannah Award for the Top Senior/Scholar Athlete in all varsity sports as well as the Top ROTC Student of 4,000 cadets.
After an Army tour in Germany where he was a player/coach for USEURA Eagles Hockey team, he came to Grand Rapids. While an elementary teacher, Gus got involved in coaching. He coached junior varsity football and at various levels of hockey. In 1996 he coached the Blandin Cubs Midget hockey team to the state championship and in 1967 he coached the VFW Bantam hockey team to the state championship. The following year, 1968, Gus was named the Grand Rapids High School head hockey coach. The hockey team won its first IRC championship in 1962, Gus coached the first GRHS team to win a state championship. His awards include the MN H S Coaches’ 1972 Coach of the Year, and the 1975 WCCO Radio All-State Hockey Team Coach of the Year.
Gus served as Head Hockey Coach at UMD 1975-82. He currently is a member of the GR Recreation Department Board of Directors and is involved in GR Hockey.

Mr. Chris Marinucci graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1990 where he played football and hockey. During his sophomore year the hockey team was Section 7AA champion and Chris was named to the All-State tournament team. In his junior year the team was Section 7AA runner-up. As a senior, Chris played on the hockey team which again was Section 7AA champion as well as the State runner-up.
Chris received a full scholarship to attend University of Minnesota-Duluth to play hockey. At UMD he played in 151 games, scoring 77 goals and 96 assists for 173 points. In his senior year, he was awarded the coveted Hobey Baker Award, as well as being named NCAA All-American and USA Player of the Year.
Chris was selected by the New York Islanders in round 5 of 1990 NHL Entry Draft. His pro career spanned eleven years, mostly in the International Hockey League. During the 1994-95 season, he was awarded the Ken McKenzie Trophy and named U.S. Rookie of the Year, and in 1998-99 was named the IHL Man of the Year. He played on the 94-95 Denver Grizzlies and 96-97, 2000-01 Chicago Wolves teams that won the Turner Cup. Playing overseas, he played on league Champions with Kokudo Bunnies in Tokyo Japan (JIHF) and with the Storhamar Dragons of Hamar Norway.

Dr. Michael Nielsen graduated from Grand Rapids High School with highest honors in 1965. He earned 10 letters in high school in basketball, football and track. In basketball he was the starting guard during 10th, 11th and 12th grades. He was All-District and All-Conference in grades 11 and 12. Playing quarterback and defensive back in football, he earned All-Conference honors as a defensive back. In track he tied the 1951 MN State track meet record in 180 yd low hurdles (19.8 sec.) and 120 yd high hurdles (14.8 sec.).
Mike attended Gustavus Adolphus College for three years before attending the U of M School of Dentistry. At GAC he was the starting point guard in basketball for two years and a member of the MIAC championship team his junior year. In track he was a three- time MIAC Conference champion. As a freshman he won the 330 yd intermediate hurdles (39.0 sec.) and as a sophomore he set a new MIAC record in the 120 yd high hurdles. He still holds the GAC school record in the high hurdles at 14.5 seconds. Besides being a member of the MIAC champion mile relay team, Mike set an NAIA District 13 record and placed 4th in the nation at the NAIA National Championships in 1967 in the 440 yd intermediate hurdles (51.8 sec.). Converted to meters (51.78 sec.), this time still stands as the GAC school record and fastest 400 meter hurdles time ever run in the MIAC. Mike’s best time in the 100 yd dash was 9.8 seconds.
Dr. Nielsen was inducted into the Gustavus Adolphus Hall of Fame in 1995.

Mr. Mark DeCenzo graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1974. Mark was a standout in both baseball and hockey, helping to lead both teams to the MSHSL State Tournament in 1974. He was named to the Hockey State Tournament Team and capped off his senior year by leading the Iron Range Conference in scoring. Mark was selected to the Minnesota Hockey All state Team in 1964.
Mark received a hockey scholarship to Michigan State University Spartans. During the 1975-76 season the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Hockey Semifinals. Mark lettered each year and served as captain during the 1977-78 season.
Mark's coaching career began as an assistant hockey coach for Apple Valley High School in 1981. Mark was elevated to head coach in 1983, guiding them to state tournament appearances in 1990, 1992, and 1993. In the fall of 1993, Mark accepted the head coaching position at Hibbing High School. During his Hibbing coaching tenure that concluded in 2013, Hibbing advanced to four Class A State Tournaments, finishing 2nd in 1994, consolation title 2001, 3rd in 2002, and 4th in 3013 along with Iron Range Conference Championships in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2006 and 2007.
Coach DeCenzo was honored by his peers as Section Coach of the Year during the following years: 1997, 1987, 1989, 1992 Section 2AA, 1997 Section 7AA, 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2011 Section 7A. Mark's career was highlighted when he was selected by his follow coaches as the 2007 State Class AA Coach of The Year and 2011 State Class A Coach of the Year.

Kelly Kirwin graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1996. Kelly earned varsity letters in basketball, tennis, and golf, captaining the golf team her freshman through senior year. Kelly was the Section Golf Champion in 1993, 1995 and 1996, playing in the Minnesota State High School League State Golf Tournament in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996. She was the State Champion runner-up in 1993 and 1994 and State Champion in 1995 and 1996! Her low round of 70 in 1996 was a state tournament record that held-up for 10 years and her 36-hole total score of 147 tied the tournament record and was not broken until 2012. The GRHS Golf team qualified for the State Tournament in 1992, finished 3rd in 1994, 2nd in 1995 and took home the State Championship in 1996!
Kelly's other accomplishments in high school include: winning two Minnesota Golf Association State Junior Golf Championships and one runner-up finish; the 1994 and 1995 Star of the North Lions Club Champion; the MWGA Junior Girls State Champion; Minnesota Golf Association Junior Girls Player of the Year 1994 and 1995; and qualified for two U.S. Junior Girls Golf Championships.
Kelly attended Wake Forest University on a NCAA Division l college golf scholarship. She competed in every tournament throughout her 4-year college career. Kelly had three top-10 individual finishes in her college career and named to the 1999 Golfweek/Sagarin All-Mid-Atlantic/East District Team. Kelly graduated from Wake Forest in 2000.
After college Kelly worked for the NHL Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Club in Raleigh, NC. Her career with the Hurricanes included being a part of the 2006 Stanley Cup Championships Team and her name is engraved on the Stanley Cup. Kelly returned to Grand Rapids in 2008 as Director of Grand Itasca Foundation. She has coached the GRHS girl's golf team, including an appearance in the 2010 State Tournament and continues to work with this program. Kelly is passionate about her community leadership and teamwork. Kelly and her husband, Jeff Ericson, have twin boys, Will and Alex.

Don Kuusinen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1963. He wrestled in junior high under Hall of Fame coach Glen Swenson and on varsity for another Hall of Fame Inductee, Skip Nalan. He served as team captain for Nalan as a senior when he went undefeated during the regular season. Kuusinen was a two time Region Seven Champion and placed fourth in the Minnesota State Tournament as junior in 1962.
Upon graduation Don attended and wrestled at the University of Minnesota and the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1968 from Bemidji St. University with a Bachelor of Science degree and eventually, his Master’s Degree. He began his career in 1968 as a math teacher at Grand Rapids High School until his retirement in 2001. He also served as assistant wrestling coach under Nalan 1968-1976 and one year as assistant track coach in 1970. Kuusinen was the head wrestling coach for the Indians in 1977-79 and assistant coach again through the 1980 season. He has also coached area youth wrestling programs for over 10 years and has been a major contributor to youth programs for many of his years in Grand Rapids.
Kuusinen served a term as president elect of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association and is a member of the Grand Rapids Wrestling Hall of Fame. He has been instrumental in promoting the sport of wrestling throughout the northern part of the state serving as a high school and college official for over 45 years. Many of those years he was the only official in the area and vital in maintaining strong wrestling programs in northern Minnesota. Don is honored to have been the first person to have won, coached and officiated the Indian Invitational/Skip Nalan Invitational, the longest continuously-run tournament in the state of Minnesota.

Mr. Larry Johnson graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1972. Larry earned his associate degree from Itasca Community College in 1975 and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1977. A strong advocate for all sports at Grand Rapids, Larry was well-known throughout the state as a premiere sports broadcaster.
Larry interned at KBJR-TV in Duluth with legendary sportscaster Bob Junkert before becoming the voice of Grand Rapids sports for more than 30 years. Larry provided broadcasts for more than 2000 contests throughout its development. He was instrumental in promoting the high school girls’ athletic program throughout its development.
Larry’s KOZY radio broadcasts became a foundation for sports enthusiasts all around the Grand Rapids area, he provided accurate yet entertaining programs for all. Larry was honored at several respective sports team banquets for his outstanding contributions and promotion of their activities.
Larry was one of the top bowlers in the area and an avid softball player for more than 35 years. He was well known for his outstanding contributions and promotion of their activities. Larry was a rollerblade enthusiast who finished 17 inline marathons.
Statewide media greatly respected Larry for his professionalism and his loyalty to the Grand Rapids athletes. He was also an original member of the committee that formed the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. Larry Johnson was the “voice” of Grand Rapids High School athletics and is an icon in radio history.

Mr. Kirk Nielsen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1992. He earned eight varsity letters in hockey and tennis, and captained four of these teams. In hockey, he participated in two state tournament, capturing 2nd and 4th place finishes. As a senior, Kirk was named First Team All State, selected as a Minnesota Mr. Hockey finalist, and honored as the Let's Play Hockey high school player of the year. On the tennis court, he played on the varsity team starting as a 7th grader and participated in the state high school tournament. Kirk also excelled in the classroom, graduated with a straight a average. He won numerous state and national-level academic awards, including National Science Scholar, Minnesota Department of Education Robert C. Byrd Scholar, and Harvard National Scholar.
Kirk was the first GRHS graduate to attend Harvdard College, where he was a four-year player on the varsity hockey team. Those teams won a number of Ivy League and ECAC titles and participated in two NCAA tournaments, including the 1994 Final Four. During his college years, Kirk was selected for multiple U.S. Olympic Festivals. Kirk also excelled off the ice at Harvard, graduating with honors and making the Dean's List every semester while earing various awards, including Academic All Ivy and Acedemic All American. Kirk capped his college carrer by winning the John P. Reardon Award as Harvard's top scholar athlete across all sports. He then played professional hockey for three years and spent time in the National Hockey League (Boston Bruins) and the American/International Hockey Leagues.
Kirk returned to Harvard Business School, where he graduated with High Distinction and was named a Baker Scholar, before embarking on a business career. He is active in his community and serves on the advisory boards of numerous companies and non-profit organizations.

Paul Bauer was the head coach for Girls and Boys Nordic Skiing from 1989 to 1998. Paul was also the head coach for the Girls and Boys Cross Country Running from 1990 to 2002, and an assistant Girls track coach in the distance events from 2000 to 2001.
During that time, the Girls Nordic Skiing Individuals went to the Minnesota State High School State Championships in 1995, 96, and 97. Boys Nordic Skiing teams/individuals went to the Minnesota State High School Championships in 1995, 96, and 97.
The Cross Country Girls team competed in the Minnesota State High School Championships from 1996 to 2002. The Girls Cross Country team places 9th, 7th, 3rd, 2nd, State Champions in 2000, 3rd and 3rd respectively. The individual Girls and Boys went to state competition from 1992 to 2002. The entire teams, both Girls and Boys were named section all conference from 1998 to 2002. Individual Girls and Boys Cross Country were named all state from 1998 to 2002.
Paul was section coach of the year in Cross Country Running in 1998, 99, and 2000 and 2001. Paul was the state coach of the year in 2000 and was honored by the High School Coaches Association 1999 and 2001.
The girls' 4x800 broke the state record in 2001.
During that time the team numbers in Cross Country Running went from 15 members to 120 members and in Nordic Skiing from 12 to 80 members.
Paul's philosophy in coaching was to improve from where you start athletically. Everyone is a winner bacause everyone can set and accomplish goals.

"Snookie" graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1959 and earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a three-sport captain and earned both MVP and All-Iron Range Conference in each sport.
After high school, "Snookie" attended Itasca Junior College where he played football, basketball, and track. He continued his education at Moorhead State University where he played baseball. At MSU, he won the NIC Batting Title.
"Snookie" earned his masters degree from Bemidji State University and taught elementary school in Staples, Minnesota. During his 16 years of teaching he also coached football, wrestling and baseball. While he was an assistant wrestling coach, the Staples team win six consecutive State Championships.
In the course of his 10 years as Activities Director for Staples-Motley High School, "Snookie" had 45 teams in state tournaments in various sports. He was a member of the Minnesota State High school League committee that developed a football playoff system.

Tom Hanna was a three-sport athlete, graduating from Grand Rapids High School in 1961. In football, he started on varsity for three years and earned All-Conference honors as a senior. He was named to the Bernue Bierman/WCCO All-State team of the week when he scored four touchdowns and intercepted a pass in one game.
On the basketball court, Tom was all-conference his senior year and went to play for Itasca Junior College. Tom ran varsity track as a 7th grader, and the years ahead, turned into first-place performances in the 100-yard high hurdles, 180-yeard low hurdles , high jump and long jump.
After his athletic carrier, Tom coached for 25 years in Grand Rapids at the middle school, junior varsity, assistant, and varsity levels. He coached successful teams in all three sports that he played. Tom coached several track and field state champions as the head girls' varsity track and field coach. He also was the head girls' varsity basketball coach and guided the first Grand Rapids team to the Minnesota State High School Tournament. While Tom made a powerful impact on student-athletes over the years, one of his most rewarding accomplishments remains having coached his four children: Tom, Kim, Lisa and Kasey.

Sandi Petersen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1984 earning varsity letters in alpine skiing in grades 7 through 12 and captained the team for three years. She completed in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) alpine meet for six straight years. Sandi placed 15th in the state meet in 7th grade and took 4th place in 10th grade. Sandi was the MSHSL State Champion in girls' alpine skiing in 1983 and 1984. She also was named KARE-11 TV Prep Athlete of the Week during her senior year.
Sandi's love for downhill skiing began when she was three years old, and she began racing competitively at age 9. She trained year-round on the slopes of Sugar Hills, Spirt Mountain, Buck Hill, and Afton Alps. Sandi competed in Junior Olympics and in the Central United States Ski Association (C.U.S.S.A.). She won the Minnesota Cup for the C.U.S.S.A. in 1983, 1984 and 1985. She also raced in the United States National Alpine Championships. Sandi received numerous medals, trophies, and other accolades during her many years of alpine skiing.
After high school, Sandi attended Itasca Community College and The College of St. Scholastica, where she earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Management and played fast-pitch softball. Sandi has remained active in other sports, such as slow-pitch softball, hockey, and broomball and played in state, national, and world tournaments.
Sandi is a carpenter and builds bridges for a Twin Cities area company.

Todd Rohloff graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1992. He lettered in both football and hockey. In hockey, he played on the Section Vll Championship team that went on to place 4th in the State Tournament. In football, his senior year, he was named All-Conference and named to the All-Tri-State Area Team, described by his coach as a "one man wrecking crew" playing at his defensive tackle position.
Recruited by colleges to play football, Todd chose instead, to pursue a future in hockey. He was drafted by the St. Paul Vulcans of the U.S.H.L. to play Jr. Hockey. He was a captain of the Vulcans and named to the league All-Star team. This earned him a scholarship to Miami University of Ohio, a member o the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, where he became a four year starter. He was the team leader in plus/minus points and was named Team Defensive Player of the year in both his junior and senior years. being the League runner-up in both categories. He was a unanimous choice for Team Captain his senior year.
Todd played professional hockey for eight years in the AHL & IHL, serving as a captain of the Portland Pirates. He played 75 games in the NHL with the Washington Capitals and the Columbus Bluejackets. In addition, Todd was named to and played for Team USA in the 2002 World Champions held in Sweden.
Todd had been an assistant coach of high school hockey in Bismarck ND, where his teams were state runners-up and consolation champions in successive years. He has since returned to Grand Rapids and is coaching youth hockey.

Dusty Rychart, a 1997 Grand Rapids High School graduate, lettered in basketball for three years. He captained the 1996-97 basketball team his senior year that was the first to make it to the State Tournament (7AAAA) since 1923. Dusty was selected to the Iron Range All-Conference team as well as the All-Tri State team during the 1994-95. 1995-96, 1996-97 seasons. Along with these awards, Dusty Rychart earned the All-Tri State Player of the Year award for the 1996-97 season and was selected All State 1st Team in 1996-97.
Dusty Rychart attended the University of Minnesota from 1997-2002 where he "walked on" as a basketball player. He would later earn a scholarship, continuing his tradition of hard work and perseverance that would prove to be his trademark as an athlete wherever he played. Dusty was a member of the U of M basketball team that won the 1998 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship. He also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Team twice during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Upon graduation, Dusty Rychart was the U of M's top 15 all-time scorer, the top 10 rebounder and the top 10 for free throw percentage.
After attending the U of M, Dusty Rychart went to a 13 year pro-basketball career playing on teams in leagues in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia from 2002-2013. Dusty earned multiple individual and team awards during his pro-playing career. these accomplishments included a league MVP award in 2007 (Australian CBA), MVP for Brisbane Capitals in 2013-14 season, an All-Tournament team (Asian Championships) selection in 2004, Australian All NBA Team (2002-2010), as well as being on the Brisbane team that won the Australian National Basketball league championships in 2007.

John Nalan graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1983 with high honors. He was a five-year letter winner in gymnastics and in two appearances at the Minnesota State Gymnastics Tournament earned 11 medals. This accomplishment set a school record for the most state tournament medals by an individual or coach. John earned the following medals: Second- Parallel Bars, Team 1982, Third- All- Around, Parallel Bars, Team 1981, Fourth- Floor Exercise, Vault (twice) and Fifth- All- Around and High Bar (twice). For his efforts, John was awarded placement on the National High School All-American Team by the National Gymnastics Coaches Association.
John continued his gymnastics career at the United States Military Academy at West Point after earning appointment for academic, civic, and athletic excellence. He was a four-year starter and letter-winner for West Point. In 1987, he won the Eastern Athletic Conference championship on vault, one of only 50 Knights in history to record such a title. John continued his military career with commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army serving in Nuremberg, Germany with 1st Armored Division Artillery with the German-American Joint Combat Team on the Czechoslovakian border.
John was also an outstanding member of the Grand Rapids wrestling team. He was a five-time letter winner with two state tournament appearances and two times and individual region finalist.
Post-military John served as girls' gymnastics coach at Eau Claire North High School in Wisconsin and wrestling coach at Deer River High School. John has also served for 20 years as high school wrestling and soccer offical in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Harlan Reed graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1953. A rare four-sport athlete. Harlan earned varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track and helped his team earn District and Iron Range Championships.
In football Harlan was on the 1952 Iron Range Championship team that defeated Hibbing in the semifinals, where he caught the touchdown pass from his inseparable sports companion, Darrel "Lefty" Warner, to tie the game. Jerry Roy kicked the extra point or the 20-19 victory.
Participating in baseball and track was complex as both sports were in the same season. Grand Rapids did not have a track, which required traveling to Greenway to practice on their cinder track. He earned 1st place in the 180 low and 120 high hurdles in 1952 and 1953 in District 28. He also anchored the District Champion 880-relay team. As a senior Harlan never lost a race until he competed in the 120 high hurdles in the State Tournament, earning 4th place. In basketball Harlan was also a standout. As a senior, he was on the District 28 All Star Team as a top rebounder.
At Itasca Junior College, Harlan excelled in track and took first place in the 220 and 800 yard runs. He also played on the basketball team. He went on to work 40 years at Blandin Paper Company, retiring as a shift supervisor. Harlan passed away April 14, 1999. From the words of Lefty Warner, "Harlan was a great player, great teammate and a great friend- a winner in every way. Suffice to say, HARLAN WAS THE BEST!"
Accepting the award for Harlan are his wife, Janis, and children Melissa, Jodi, Rian and Jace.

Kim Toewe graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1999. Kim excelled at softball and basketball, earning four letters in each sport along with serving as team captain for two years in each. Kim led the Thunderhawks to their first ever Minnesota State High School League Girls State Basketball Tournament.
Kim was a All Iron Range Conference and Mesabi Daily Tribune All Area Teams selection in softball. Kim's high school basketball honors include: Four year Iron Range All Conference Team, Wood City Classic All Tournament Member, 1998 Second Team All State and a Honorable Mention All State in 1996 and 1997, 1998 Minnesota High School All Star Team, 1998 All State Tournament Team, 1998 Minnesota Associated Press All State Basketball and was a Honorable Mention to the USA Today All-Star Basketball Team. Kim was both the 1998 Duluth News Tribune Player of the Year and the Hibbing News Tribune Player of the Year. At the time of her graduation, she was the Grand Rapids High School girls basketball all-time career scoring leader.
Kim continued her outstanding basketball career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Criminology. Her many individual achievements include: 2001 team scoring leader while also leading the team in rebounding for three years, UMD fifth leading career scorer and rebounder, team captain for two years along with being named the MVP in both 2001 and 2002. Kim was a Northern Sun Intercollegiate All Conference selection in 2001, 2002, and 2003, the NSIC Tournament 2003 Most Valuable Player, and the 2003 NSIC Player of The Year. During the 2002-03 season she was a preseason All American Team selection, North Central Region All Tournament Team and named to the All Region First Team.
Kim earned a law enforcement certificate from Hibbing Community College and is employed as a deputy sheriff for St. Louis County. Kim and her husband, Eric Hanegmon, have to children, Grace and Luke.

Rachel (Gordon) Wills gradated from Grand Rapids High School in 2002. She became the school's first State Swimming Champion and set the Minnesota State record in the 100 backstroke. Rachel is a six-time Section Champion and nine-time Section Runner-up. She graduated with six GRHS school records and held pool records in at least eight pools across the state. Rachel was the Duluth News Tribune Athlete of the Year, and recognized as the Grand Rapids Herald Review and Hibbing Tribune Swimmer of the Year for her junior and senior seasons. She was named WDIO-TV Prep Athlete of the Week twice.
In addition to being a five-year letter winner in swimming, Rachel achieved seven letters in synchronized swimming and three letters in band. She went on to earn and athletic scholarship to the University of North Dakota and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2006. At UND she became a seven-time NCCA All-American, NCC Conference Champion, school record holder and was named captain of the Fighting Sioux squad her senior season.
After her collegiate career, Rachel picked up the sport of triathlon. She competed across the country and became a two-time Ironman finisher. Rachel, who started swimming when she was six months old, attributes the passion, discipline, hard work and mental toughness honed as a Grand Rapids High School swimmer as difference-makers in her life and in her service to others.
Rachel continues to teach swimming technique to children and adults. She is also an elite amateur cyclist, competing with the Chicago Women's Elitle Team. Rachel resides in the Chicago area with her husband, Kyle.

Paul Petruzzi began his coaching career at Grand Rapids High School in 1969. He served as head boys' gymnastics coach for 23 years, and also coached diving for the boys' swim team for a number of years.
During Paul's career as the boys' gymnastics coach, the team recorded a dual meet record of 115 wins and 32 losses. In regional competition, the team won three championships and placed second on four different occasions. They were also champions in 12 Invitational Tournaments.
In State Meet competition, the team placed in the top 10 for 13 seasons. The team earned State trophies for placing third three times and placing second three times. In the 1989 the team brought home the State Championship title. Additionally, Paul's teams were recognized with National High School Academic Award for boys' gymnastics.
In 1988 Grand Rapids hosted the Boys' State Championship Meet- the one and only time the meet was held outside the metro area since the beginning of the sport in 1943.
Paul served as president of the Boys' Gymnastics Coaches Association from 1987-1992. He was selected as the Minnesota Boys' Gymnastics Coach of the Year In 1981 and 1992. Paul also received national recognition as the National Boys' Gymnastics Coach of the Year in 1982.

Quincy Osborn was a Grand Rapids graduate, class of 2002. He ended his distinguished high school career as a two-time wrestling State Champion, winning the 119 pound title in 2001 and again at 125 pounds in 2002. He also placed second at 103 pounds in 2000.
Quincy's senior season campaign was especially prolific, He was undefeated and did not allow a single offensive point the entire year. In addition, he was multiple Olympic-style Minnesota State Champ, three-time USA wrestling Cadet and Junior All-American, and National High School Coaches Association Senior All-American.
Additional prep accolades include three-time Skip Nalan Tournament champion: three-time State qualifier: fourth all time in career wins with 146; and school record holder for single season falls with 26, and for single season takedowns with 146.
Quincy continued his career at the University of Minnesota, becoming a two-year starter and two-time national qualifier. He ended his stellar career winning a National Championship as a team member and individual champion a 141 pounds for Augsburg College in 2006.
After active competition, Quincy graduated from Augsburg and earned his master's degree in coaching education from Ohio University. He joined the wrestling coaching rankings, serving as assistant at Division I Ohio University for four years. He spent on year at Division I New York-Buffalo, as well as a year as head coach at Division III Lakeland College.
Quincy then returned to Grand Rapids to coach one year at GRHS before accepting his assistant coaching position at Concordia College in Moorhead, where he makes his home with his wife, Hannah, and daughters, Cleopatra and Victoria.

James R. "Mouse" Malwitz graduated with honors from Grand Rapids High School in 1981. He was a five-sport athlete, earning 11 letters participating in hockey, football, baseball, golf and track and field. Jim played on six State Tournament teams, four in hockey, one in baseball, and one in football. He was a member of two State Championship teams, baseball in 1978 and hockey in 1980.
Jim was captain of the first football team in school history to appear in the State playoffs. He was an alternate captain of the hockey team in 1981 and was drafted by the NHL Minnesota North Stars in the 2nd round of the 1981 draft.
Jim was recruited by colleges to play hockey and football, and accepted a scholarship to the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the 1982-83 WCHA Championship hockey team and was elected as an alternate captain for the 1983-84 Golden Gophers. Jim was selected to try out for the 1984 U.S. Olympic hockey team. He played for the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League, and was Rookie of the Year for the Indianapolis Checkers of the International Hockey League.
Jim lives in San Diego, where he works as a broker and remains active in hockey, surfing and deep sea fishing and enjoys watching his daughters play college softball. He is "the self-proclaimed #1 ranked surfer in the world, out of Grand Rapids, Minnesota."

Tom Graupmann graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1975. He lettered in basketball and baseball. Tom was named All-Tri-State Area and All Conference in basketball as a senior point guard. In baseball Tom was a four-year starter, playing second base and shortstop. His junior year, the "Indians" played in the State High School Baseball Tournament and finished sixth. He was selected to play in the first Minnesota Lion's All-Star baseball series. The summer after high school graduation Tom's Grand Rapids American Legion baseball team won the State Championship.
Tom played collegiate baseball at Mankato State University. He was the Spirit Award winner as a sophomore, voted Most Improved as a junior, and was selected team captain as a senior. His junior and senior year MSU qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament. As a senior, Tom's MSU baseball team finished third nationally. That year Tom was selected to the All Midwest Region team as a second baseman. Tom is a member of the Mankato State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Tom continued to play amateur baseball upon graduating from MSU, and was the starting centerfielder and lead-off man for the State Champion Dundas Dukes.
Tom has been an educator his entire career, teaching and coaching at John Ireland School, St. Peter High School and Northfield Public Schools, before becoming Northfield Activities Director. His state-wide leadership over the years include posts on the Executive Board of the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, as well as the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors and more- all reflecting his belief in serving others and providing quality educational opportunities to young people.
Most important to Tom are his wife, Denise, their children, Chris and Stephanie, and their families.

Peter Goeman swam and played baseball for Grand Rapids High School from 2002-2006. He was an individual State swimming champion three times and set the State record for the 100 yd breaststroke in 2007. That year he also placed runner up at the Junior Nationals in the 100 yd breaststroke. While swimming for GRHS, Peter set (or was a part of) 1 state record, 5 team records, 4 sectional records and over 10 pool records. He won 3 state titles and over 10 sectional titles, qualifying by time for multiple automatic All-American and All-American consideration honored. Peter was named Minnesota Swimmer of the Year in 2006.
Peter also played centerfield for the GRHS baseball team. During his tenure, the team had multiple successes in conference play, highlighted by a 2005 runner up finish.
Peter went on to play baseball in Los Angeles, CA at The Master's University, where he played centerfield and batted lead-off for four years (2006-2010). He won multiple conference and team honors, his college team had two national conference appearances.
After college, Peter coached swimming for the three years while he went to graduate school to earn two master's degrees. He then went on to earn a PhD in biblical studies, with a emphasis in Old Testament and the Hebrew language. Peter now uses the gifts of discipline and passion, which were fine-tuned during his time at GRHS and college, as a professor helping others understand the Bible and defending its historical accuracy.

Jessica (Goeden) Lust graduated in the Grand Rapids High School class of 2002. She began competitive running as an 8th grader and earned a total of 15 State medals, including 2 State championship medals in the 4 x 800m and a team State championship title in cross country in 2000. She was a captain in track, cross country, and basketball.
Jessica completed her accomplished high school career by setting a state record in the 4 x 800m relay and being named GRHS Outstanding Senior in 2002. She holds 4 GRHS records in the 1600m, 3200m, 4x400m and 4x800m.
After high school Jessica continued her running career as a D1 scholarship athlete at Costal Carolina University, where she was selected as Rookie of the Year and named to the All-Academic Team for the Big South Conference. During these four years she competed in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track, where she specialized in the 800m and the 300m steeplechase. Jessica won 9 Big South Team Championships (4 cross country, 2 indoor track and 3 outdoor track). She graduated Summma Cum Laude, with a double major in marketing and economics.
Jessica constructed her "track record" of success working in the private sector for a technology company in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where her recent promotion makes her the youngest female associate inthe company's 36-year history.
Jessica actively mentors other business woman to pursure carrer and family sucess through teamwork and leadership skills delveloped during her time here at GRHS and throughout her running career. She remains an avid runner.

Dan Jinks graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1973. He was a three-sport athlete and three-time letter winner throwing the shot and discus. Dan also lettered in football, captained the team his senior year and earned All-Conference honors as a defensive tackle. In wrestling Dan earned two letters and capped off his senior year with a region championship and State Tournament berth.
Dan graduated from Moorhead State University, lettering in football and wrestling and returned to Grand Rapids to teach elementary PE and adaptive PE. He served as an assistant football coach from 1980-18984 and from 1999-2013, coaching the offensive and defensive lines and special teams. He was an assistant track coach from 1980-2022. During his tenure as a shot and discus coach he had 17 State place winners, two State championship and the girls' all-time Minnesota State discus record holder.
Dan served as assistant wrestling coach from 1980-1984 then becme head coach from 1984-1999 and from 2002-2017, retiring as the all-time winningest coach in Grand Rapids wrestling history with 416 career wins. He coached 70 individual section champions, 115 individual State qualifiers, 48 individual State place winners and 6 individual State championships. His team won 14 conference championships and 8 section team titles. His 1987 team was a State runner-up. Seven of Dan's wrestlers went on to earn All-American honors at the collegiate level.
Dan was named Section Coach of the Year 9 times. He served as Section 7AAA respresenative for 9 years and president of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.
Dan was inducted in the Dave Bartelma MN Wrestling Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Veronica Sackett graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 2002. She was middle distance and long-distance runner in track, a cross country runner and a point guard in basketball. Veronica lettered all 6 years in cross country, 6 years in track, and 2 years in basketball. She was awarded All-Conference honors 14 times in the 3 sports. Veronica earned All-State honors 4 times in track and 3 times in cross country. She was section champion mutiple times in the 800m run, the mile, the 4x400m relay and the 4x800m relay.
A two-time State champion in the 4x800m relay. Veronica had the most success running relays. Her first championship came as a 9th grader anchoring the relay with older sister Rachel handing off to her. Her second championship 4x800m relay broke the all-time Minnesota State record. In cross country, she was on the Grand Rapids State Championship Team in 2000, placed third in 1999, and second in 2001. Veronica still holds high school records in track and cross country.
On scholarship at the University of North Dakota, Veronica ran cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Her events ranged from the 5K to the 8000m run to the steeplechase. Veronica was a member of 4 UND record setting relays and is the current UND record holder in the steeplechase. She was a national qualifer in cross country and the steeplecchase and was awarded multiple All-NCC and All-Academic honors.
Veronica graduated Magna Cum Laude in civil engineering and received the University of North Dakota Femal Scholar/Athlete Award. She currently works as a professional engineer.

Kurt Rohloff graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1986 with highest honors. He was a three-year starter in football and hockey and a two-year letterwinner in golf. Kurt was named to the all-conference and all tri-state football teams his junior and senior years, as well as the WCCO All-State Football Team of the Week. He led Grand Rapids to Nothern Lakes Conference Championships his junior and senior years and served as team captain.
Kurt played hockey at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he made an immediate impact and was a four-year starter. Kurt was only the second in Academy hockey history to be named team captain his junior and senior years. He was recognized as Defensive Player of the Year his senior year and runner-up Academy wide for the Athletic Leadership Award. Kurt's leadership positions include Cadet Squadron Commander, Group Athletic Officer and Cadet in Charge of the Combat Arms Range, responsible for training 1,400 basic cadets on firearms.
In 1990 he was commissioned as an Air Force officer and attended pilot training, earning Distinguished Graduate honors, Kurt flew in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received many medals, citations and commendations. Kurt later transitioned to the Air Force Reserves and was hired as a pilot for American Airlines.
In 2014 Kurt retired from the Air Force after 23 years of service. In his 32-year flying career, he flew 10 different types of airplanes and amassed over 13,000 hours of flying time.
Kurt returned to the Grand Rapids area and continues to fly the Boeing 787 internationally for American Airlines.

Mike Christensen graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1996. he was a six-year letterwinner in golf and qualified for four Class AA State Golf Tournaments. He claimed three State championships- as am individual in 1994 & 1996 and as part of the 1995 Grand Rapids team championship, the school's first title. Mike also finished 5th at State twice in individual competition, in 1992 and 1995.
Mike was a four-year letter winner in hockey and co-captain of the team his senior year. He was named Grand Rapids High School Senior of the Year in 1996.
In addition to his high school golf success, Mike won the Minnesota Golf Association Junior Championship in 1994 and became the youngest winner of the MGA State Amateur Champion ships in 1995. In total, Mike has won 13 Minnesota State Golf titles and qualified for 9 U.S Golf Association events.
Following high school Mike received a full scholarship to play golf at Duke University. He lettered all four years and competed in two NCAA Championships. Mike played professionally after college on several golf tourd, including the Asian PGA Tour in 2002, 2003, and 2006. He also qualified and made the cut in the 2001 PGA Tour John Deere Classic.
When Mike's professional golf career came to a close, his passion for the game continued as he caddied for Kevin Steeelman (Duke golf teammate) for five years on the PGA Tour. After regaining his amateur status in 2011, Mike continued to compete at the state and national level.

Of all of the great State Championship teams in the history of Grand Rapids High School, the 1978 State champion baseball team is the first team inducted to the GRHS Hall of Fame. They were the first baseball team from GRHS to capture the State Championship (going 22-1 on the season), the fourth to win the Region 7 Championships and the second in a streak of eight straight region championships.
The team played a small ball offense (putting the ball in play, bunting and moving runners) now known as "Streetar Ball." Pitching and defense were dominate recording an unprecedented state record 15 shutouts on the season.
The Indians went 17-1 in the regular season with their only loss coming in the season opener to Cambridge. They ratted off 22 straight victories. The squad powered through the Region 7 tournament.
