Grade 6 Integrated Math In Physical Education Activity: Forming Teams

Note: Students work on forming teams by counting the total number of students and dividing by the number of teams we need.

Standard - Number and Operation: Solve real world mathematical problems using arithmetic.

Grade 6 Game Activity I: 3v3 short-field soccer

Note: There are four to five fields in the middle of the main soccer field including permanent and portable goals. Teams use the front and back of the portable goals for small-sided games to use available space efficiently. Students make up their own teams and choose who they play during rotation of teams.

Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

Outcome S1.M8.6: Dribbles with dominant foot using a change of speed and direction in a variety of practice tasks.

Grade 6 Skill Work Activity: Triangle Pass and Trap

Note: Three students move in a circle with one student dribbling the soccer ball and passing to the student in front of her or him. Leading the receiver is a skill we focus on. The receiver traps the ball, control dribbles and continues the pattern. The students are gathered together and questioned by the teacher on how the proper execution of the drill is important.

Standard 5: Recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

Outcome 5.M4.6: Describes how moving competently in a physical activity setting creates enjoyment.

Grade 6 Game Activity II: 6v6 half-field soccer

Note: The teams continue to play soccer with more players, two or three balls to encourage more ball touches, and on a half-field.

Outcome S2.M1.6: Creates open space by using locomotor movements: walking and running, in combination with movement: varying pathways, change of speed, direction or pace.

Our classes also modify the rules of games by including how other world cultures play the games. We include Gaelic Football rules in our soccer game-play, a game played in Ireland that allows kicking or kneeing the ball to oneself after a certain amount of steps to get more steps and to throw the ball to a teammate.

Grade 6 Closing Activity: Friday Free Day

Note: The students participate in free play activity for the last five to 10 minutes of class. The rules include students are to be active with the minimum activity walking laps around the gym. No full court shots or kicking or throwing balls without a purpose.

Standard 4: Exhibits personal and social behavior that respects self and others.

Outcome S4.M7.6: Uses physical activity and fitness equipment appropriately and safely, with the teacher’s guidance.
