Weekly Updates
Hi Fifth Grade Families!
May 28-30
It is so hard to believe we are approaching the last week of school! I am completing my 31st year of teaching and as I reflect on my years, I am so thankful! I am especially thankful for the amazing growth your children showed over their fifth grade year. Thank you for raising such amazing kids and being great moms and dads!
I previewed the week with the kids and it will look like this:
Tuesday- Normal day wrapping up a couple of projects
Wednesday- Normal morning with cleaning and handing in books. In the afternoon, we will have our bike/walk on the trail. If they choose to bike, they must have a helmet. I will also send home their report cards and supply list for sixth grade on Wednesday.
Thursday- The only thing the kids need to bring to school that day is: sack lunch, swimsuit (they can wear it under clothes to school if they would like or bring it), sunscreen, and a towel. We will be heading to Chesterwoods for the day. While there we will have a great time hiking, eating, swimming/playing in the sand, and playing kickball. It is such a fun way to wrap up the school year.
May 20-24
Reading- We will be reading and discussing the story "Sweet Music in Harlem". It is an example of realistic fiction. The characters, setting, and plot seem real, but the author has made them up.
Math- We will be starting our last chapter in math "Use Measures in the Metric System". We will be learning to choose appropriate metric units for measuring length. We will also convert metric units of length, mass, and capacity.
Spelling- This week in spelling we are studying our final list. It consists of words that are easily confused because they have similar pronunciations and spellings. The pretest on List# 30 is Monday with the final test on Thursday.
Please note that all AR points are due May 24. From now until the end of the year, it will go very fast. Thank you for continuing to encourage your child to do their best each day!

The format for Math League is changing this year. Instead of narrowing teams down to 12 students, anyone who would like to be a part of the Math League team is able to join. These students will be expected to practice once a week during school hours and do some math preparation at home. We will still have the three after-school meets on January 4, January 30, and February 8 against other area schools. Two teams of five members (10 total students) will be chosen for each of those meets. The criteria for the first three meets will be based on assessments and behavior at team practices. In addition, we will be having a fourth meet on February 15 for all PEM Math League students. Everyone on the team is guaranteed the opportunity to compete at this final meet. If you originally answered back “No” to having your child participate/try-out for Math League, but have now changed your mind after knowing the new format, please reply to this email by November 8th to let your teacher know.
