Social Studies Unit Layout
In fourth grade, we cover the five different regions of the United States. While learning about each region, the students will be tested on states and capitals memorization. Below is a layout of Social Studies curriculum, along with when each region is studied.
Unit 1: Reading Maps & U.S. Regions
Unit 2: Northeast Region
*13 Colonies, Revolutionary War, Immigration, Indigenous Peoples of the Region
Unit 3: Southeast Region
*Government, U.S. Capital Landmarks, Civil War, Indigenous Peoples of the Region
Unit 4: Midwest Region
*Settlement of MN (MN focus), Economics, Indigenous Peoples of the Region
Unit 5: Southwest Region
*Spanish/Mexican/Indigenous History of the Region, Festivals, State Parks
Unit 6: West Region
*Hawaii & Alaska, Westward Expansion/The Great Migration (Oregon Trail focus)
Unit 7: Review U.S. Regions; 50 States & Capitals
**Students will work on weekly map packets throughout the school year to help with map and geography skills.
