Welcome to 8th grade English!
About Me
My name is Mrs. Matiash, and this is my 20th year teaching English. I absolutely love teaching 8th graders.
I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Diversity Communications from the University of Wisconsin, Superior. Upon the completion of my undergraduate degree, I enrolled in the Master of Arts education program at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse while simultaneously getting an undergraduate degree in English.
I live in Plainview with my husband who is also a teacher, our four children, our two dogs named Theo and Pip, & our aloof cat named Willow. When I'm not busy in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with our kids, playing board games, gardening, baking, and spending time with extended family and friends.
As a teacher I believe in differentiation so that all students have educational opportunities that allow them to feel both challenged and successful. I am passionate about learning and reading, but I also believe that learning occurs in many different ways.
I am thankful that I get to spend the year teaching 8th graders. Please let me know if you ever have questions or concerns.

English 8 Important Details:
Students will get ten new vocabulary words to study each week. The words will be given on Monday, and the quizzes will be on Fridays. Students can study using the Quizlet app on their iPads.
Students are expected to be reading an independent reading book all year long.
New IXLs will be assigned on Tuesdays, and students have one week to complete the new lessons.
Some of the work for English this year will occur within Schoology. Your son/daughter will know how to access his/her class materials. Each English class has it's own online class. You will need to sign up for your child's class to get weekly updates in your email about test and homework scores. Email me if you need help setting this up.
