For privacy reasons, Yellow Medicine East does not routinely provide classroom notifications for communicable diseases (influenza, COVID-19, strep throat, head lice, etc.).
We encourage families to routinely evaluate their children at home and keep them home per the guidance listed below.
Recommendations based on CDC and MDH guidance for staff members, students, and community members experiencing common respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV are: Stay home and away from others if you are experiencing respiratory virus symptoms. You may return to work or school 24 hours after a fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medications) and symptoms have improved.
Symptoms Improved: A person feels well and is able to return to normal activities. Any lingering symptoms such as a cough or runny nose should be mild or infrequent.
If your student in grades EC-12 tests positive for COVID-19, influenza, or RSV, OR has symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) or gastrointestinal illness please report this to the office for tracking purposes. School districts are required to report to the Minnesota Department of Health if 10% of our student population are absent in a single day (per school building) related to these illnesses.
Note: Students are expected to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess and physical education, unless a physician's order is received. The order must include the reason for the restriction, length of restriction, and a physician's signature.
Children should be kept home when they have:
Fever 100° or higher

Extreme congestion or nasal drainage
Persistent cough
Student has live lice in their hair
Student is not feeling healthy enough to perform routine activities in the classroom.

Please make sure that you provide contact numbers that allow the school to reach you or the emergency contact at all times.
Children can return to school when:
They are fever free for 24 hours without use of fever reducing medication.
They have been on an antibiotic 24 hours for treatment of a bacterial infection.
24 hours after vomiting/diarrhea has subsided and fluids have been replenished.

*Communicable illnesses should be reported to the school office or to the nurse as soon as possible. The school reserves the right to request a doctor’s note to clear any student for return to school if there is concern of the student being contagious.
