Chapter 6 - Academic Procedures
6.1 MSHSL Participation Beliefs.
Academic priorities must come before participation in athletic or fine arts activities.
6.2 Farmington Area Public Schools Participation Beliefs.
School activities are of secondary importance in relation to the formal instruction program; however, they complement the instructional program in providing students with additional opportunities for growth and development.
6.3 Academic Probation.
Students assigned to academic probation are not excelling academically and are in jeopardy of not meeting graduation requirements. Students on academic probation will be required to submit a grade report weekly to the Activities Director or head coach/head coach designee signed by all of their teachers indicating passing grades and turned in assignments. With passing grades and submitted assignments, students on academic probation will gain athletic/activity eligibility for a one (1) week period. Students who are failing classes or have missing assignments will become ineligible in athletics/activities for a one (1) week period. At any time, students may submit another grade report to gain eligibility immediately.
Students are required to have 55 credits AND have met all other graduation requirements to earn an FHS diploma. Students may participate in the graduation ceremony if they have 53 credits, but they will not receive their diploma until they have earned 55 credits.
The following chart is how FHS defines “progress towards graduation”:

6.4 Student Release From Classes.
All co-curricular activities should be scheduled so students miss a minimum number of classes for travel or away contests. Coaches/advisors should make arrangements with the Activities Director to have students excused from class only when absolutely necessary because of travel. Dismissal shall be no more than fifteen (15) minutes prior to departure. Student dismissal and bus departure times must be approved by the Activities Director. It is the responsibility of the participant to advise their teachers the day before the class they are to miss because of any early dismissal. All work should be made up at the convenience of the teacher.
6.5 Tournament Squads.
Team Sports – team personnel will consist of the number of individuals listed in the MSHSL policies handbook. Additional squad members may be included at the discretion of the Activities Director where guidelines permit. Individual Sports – Individuals participating in the tournament shall consist of those individuals qualifying for a given level of competition. In the case of a single athlete qualifying for participation in the state tournament, the coach may select a second athlete to travel as a companion to the qualifier. The school will provide meals and lodging for this second individual at the same rate as the qualifier.
6.6 Student Absences & Suspensions.
A participant absent from school may not participate or play in an activity that day unless they have attended the last four full class periods of the day or have permission from the Activities Director.
The head coach/advisor determines the attendance procedure for practices, games, meets, and contests. The attendance procedure is to be shared with the team members and parents at the beginning of the season.
A student who is suspended from school will be ineligible to participate in any school-sponsored co-curricular activities until the student is readmitted to school in good standing.
Unexcused absences may result in suspension from one or more contests to be determined by the Activities Director and coach.
