Why?
The goal of competency-based reporting is to communicate learner progress towards grade-level learning targets in a way that is accurate, consistent, meaningful, and supportive of learning.
The goal of competency-based reporting is to communicate learner progress towards grade-level learning targets in a way that is accurate, consistent, meaningful, and supportive of learning.
- Accurate: By reporting solely on academic factors, it creates a clear picture of what the learner has and has not learned without the influence of other factors. These other factors, such as effort, attitude, and behavior are still essential, but are not a reflection of the academic learning and are therefore communicated and reported separately.
- Consistent: By using rubrics that outline the grade-level learning targets and the learning levels for each, it establishes clear and consistent expectations for learner competency up front.
- Meaningful: By clearly communicating what level of learning has taken place, it allows for progress to be recorded according to the essential competencies rather than by a single homework or test score. This makes it easier to identify areas of strength and to address areas of concern for each learner.
- Supportive of Learning: By focusing on the content that has or has not been learned, rather than on accumulating points to reach a certain total, the learner is striving to achieve a specific learning goal instead of a letter grade or percentage. Reassessment is also encouraged which supports learning by allowing new levels of learning to replace the old levels when a learner shows improvement.
