The High School Application Process

Get Ready for High School!

The high school application window opens in October, and the deadline to apply is December 2, 2019. You can access MySchools now to get started. Here's what you can do now:

• Get your High School Admissions Welcome Letter! This letter will include instructions for creating your account in MySchools—an online directory of public schools and your personalized high school application—as well as a unique account creation code.
• For current eighth grade public school students: Your Welcome Letter was mailed to your home address. Questions? Ask your school counselor.

Register for Specialized High Schools Admissions Test by October 10, 2019. Once you receive your Welcome Letter and create your MySchools account, you can register online to take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test and/or audition for LaGuardia High School. Sign up for the high school admissions email list to get the latest updates and key date reminders. · Come to a high school admissions fair. NEW! We’ve made a few updates to the high school admissions process!

These updates will not change how you apply to high school, how you get an offer, or where you get an offer. Here's what's new:

• When you get your high school offer, you’ll also receive a list of programs where you’ve been waitlisted.
• You’ll be automatically added to the waitlist of any program that you listed higher on your application than the program where you received an offer.

Please view the Queens High School Directory. Highlighted (on p. 4) are the High Schools that many IS 230 students have applied to in past years.

The High School Application process begins in the end of the 7^th Grade.

7^th Grade June

• Students received the 2020 NYC High School Admissions Guide with and Welcome Letters for parents to create Myschools account.
• Parents invited to attend IS230 High Information Workshop

8^th Grade June-August

• Begin to review High School Admissions Guide and visit MySchools to explore your high school options from computer or phone
• Visit High School Admissions Website for updates, resources high school fairs, workshops, open houses and other events

September

• 9/9/19 Families can login to their MySchools account and directly register for the SHSAT and/or LaGuardia auditions
• 9/21, 9/22, 10/5 & 10/6 Attend Borough High School Fairs
• Week of 9/10- Welcome Letters sent home. Parents can add their child to Myschools account
• Week of 9/10 & 9/16- 8th Grade Guidance Counselor will make class visits to register students interested in taking the Specialized High School Admissions Test and/or attending LaGuardia auditions
• 9/19/19 Attend High School Information Workshop for parents at IS230 (Back to School Night)

October

• Families can begin to add programs to the High School Application using Myschools account
• 10/10/19 - Deadline for families to register for SHSAT and/or LaGuardia auditions. Approximately two weeks after October 10th, test and audition tickets will be available for school counselors and for families

November

• Continue attending Open Houses and completing additional admissions requirements if needed to finalize list of programs on the High School Application

December

• 12/2/19- Deadline to submit High School Application

March 2020

• Students receive their High School Offer including SHS offer if Applicable
