Readworks is an online program that allows students to read certain passages and answer questions that pertain to their understanding of the text, standards, and vocabulary usage.
This tool can be used both in person and virtually and is accessible via their website and/or google classroom. A teacher can simply assign the passage, short story, or poem and choose either an extended version of questioning where it involves them writing or either a shortened version to test their knowledge of the text/standards associated with that assignment.
I use this particular tool in my classroom to review, reteach, or test their application knowledge of a new standard.
The usage of this tool meets the needs of my students because I can choose what standard, a particular student or whole group, and I can choose texts of high interest.
Special Education Benefits: Students can highlight and annotate materials. This is very beneficial for these students because it is providing accommodations that are needed in order for these students to be successful. In addition, differentiated texts are provided which helps to meet students on their independent achievement levels even if they are working below grade level. Text-to-Speech options also provide added accommodations for students who struggle with reading and writing.
ReadWorks has the capability to provide vocabulary integration. They allow the student first to judge the words that they see, hear them spoken, and rate their previous knowledge of that word before reading the text.
As you can see, ReadWorks has the feature that allows the computer to read the text to the student. It also has the feature that allows them to control the speed of the text being read to them. Lastly, the blue words are vocabulary that they will need in order to grasp the concept the author is trying to teach them. The student has the ability to click on the work and learn the meaning.
ReadWorks creates questions that are text based, standard relevant, and depending on the way the teacher sets it up it is also self grading. This program also connects directly to google classroom for the convenience of the teacher and the students.
Edpuzzle is an online program/website that allows educators to integrate video instruction within their classroom.
This tool can be used in person when a teacher is wanting to show a video and also what the student has learned from the video. The reason that this is beneficial is that teachers can upload any educational video that they see fit and integrate questioning or notes in certain parts. This feature would be particularly helpful when doing virtually because if you have a student that needs reminding of certain content or the student was absent, the teacher can still keep track of the students learning and understanding based on how they scored within their short video.
I use this tool on a daily basis to review old concepts learned from previous grades, introduce new concepts, and reteach concepts that we have already covered.
This tool meets my students' needs because it allows them to make use of technology, keep up with concepts, review old concepts, and preview new standards. It is also a fun way to learn instead of just watching a whole group video because it keeps students' attention due to the fact that they are being questioned from the video.
Special Education Benefits: Students are able to work at their own individual pace. This is great for students who experience processing and/or memory deficits of any kind. Comments along with audio notes and questions can also be embedded by the teacher to assist the student in gaining understanding of the material. This is excellent for students with disabilities due to many need material reworded or rephrased in order to gain mastery of the content.
