Dear Torchlighter Families,
As we wrap up another amazing school year, we want to thank all of our Townley Torchlighters and families for your support, love, and partnership. Over the summer, continue helping your child stay sharp by reading daily, practicing math facts, writing in a journal, visiting the library, and finding fun ways to learn through everyday activities like cooking, shopping, or family games. Every little bit helps keep those growing minds active!
As many of you know, I will be retiring at the end of this school year. While this chapter is coming to a close, I will always hold the memories of our Torchlighters near and dear to my heart. It has truly been an honor to serve this incredible school community. I know our students will continue to grow, shine, and excel because they belong to the greatest school in the district!
Never forget that working as a team with your child’s teacher makes a tremendous difference. Parents will always be their child’s first and most important teacher, and your encouragement, support, and involvement help shape their future success.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your children’s journey. Once a Torchlighter, always a Torchlighter!
✨ We are a Townley Torchlighter Family!
“A child’s future is brightest when school and family walk hand in hand. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your child’s journey.
Our Torchlighters will continue to shine brighter one day at a time.”

Summer time is here and it's time to reset for the new year. Our students have done several amazing things this year. We have seen growth in all areas. Our teachers and students have made connections, built friendships, and shown love. We have some amazing teachers that have poured their hearts this year and went above and beyond to make sure our students got what they needed. The final day of school was filled with laughter and tears as they said goodbye to some and see you later to others.
What can you do to keep the learning going over the summer? Have your child reading and answer questions about what they have read. You should have them reading at least 30 minutes a lease three times a week. Once they have read, look in their book and ask them questions relating to what they have read. For math, have them practice their facts and skip counting. Most teachers have sent books home for them to practice. All students can benefit from practicing doing word problems as well. Don't overwork them but don't let their minds go weak.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER and BE SAFE!!

NEWS FROM YOUR FRONT OFFICE
Thank you Parents, for signing up early for award ceremonies! Expect pre-registration to be our best practice for big events during the day going forward. It helps us prepare and lessens your wait.
Complete your returning student registration. Even if you move to another Irving school your student is considered "returning". You will need your HAC account, get them reset while Faith and Val are still at school.
Please send Gallaga a message if you are moving during the summer. Provide your new school name and your new address so that we may forward your students records in August.
Our usual reminders. Keep these in mind as you schedule appointments for August and beyond.
When your students appointment is early, bring them to school after. With a doctors note they will receive credit for the whole day.
If you pick them up after 930 am, they are present for the day.
If you need to pick up your student(s) early, please do so before 2:30.
School starts promptly at 7:45 am. There will be tardy changes coming in August

Home Access Center (HAC). This is the best way to keep informed with your student's attendance and grades. Progress reports and report cards are only viewable through HAC. If you have not logged in for a while, call us for reset. You will need HAC to register for next year.
Also, please do not "stop" text messages from Townley Staff or your teacher. You will miss out valuable communication.
Please contact the front office for any questions regarding HAC at 972-600-6800.

Healthy Tips for a Fun Summer
It is important for the physical and mental health of children to be active. Check for free or low-cost sports camps at their school or the local rec center—or get active by walking, biking, or roller skating as a family during the summer . Play fitness bingo or other creative games when you're with a group of friends for fun ways to pass time while also getting your bodies moving.
Keep children physically active 1 hour a day
Maintain a regular sleep schedule
Encourage and monitor healthy food choices
Limit social media time
Be a good role model
Dear Townley Families,
“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.” -Mason Cooley
Whether or not you are able to go on vacation this summer, you can "travel" by reading. As I tell my students, "Books can take you anywhere!"
The same way your child logs in to Beanstack or Sora in Classlink, you can reach the Irving Summer Reading! Just click on the axolotl. (See picture above.) This year, our Irving ISD summer reading theme is: READOLOTL or READOLITTLE. JUST READ! Click on the following website to learn more about the Beanstack summer challenge and find a wealth of resources! www.irvingisd.net/summerreading
Encourage your child to read for pleasure this summer. Remember, listening to audio books on Sora counts as reading! All of our e-books in Classlink are available to your child over the summer. I would also encourage you to get a free library card from the Irving Public Library. The public library is a wonderful place to explore and learn (and borrow books for free) during the hot summer months!
Happy reading,

Ways to Prevent Summer Slide
As we say good-bye to the school year and move into summer, we are excited about the time we will have to rest and have fun with family and friends.
This final newsletter will share a few tips to help prevent the summer slide we see in many students when they come back the next school year.
What is summer slide you ask? It is a loss of learning that occurs over the summer break. Students will often start the summer at a higher level and then forget some of what they learned the school year. This causes students to start the next school year at a lower level than where they ended in the previous school year.
We have seen so many students grow this year and celebrated so much growth at our recent awards ceremonies! We want to keep moving in the right direction to help our students to continue to grow and make progress.
Here are some things you can do to help your student reduce the risk of summer slide and keep the learning momentum going.
1 - Read every day for 20 minutes. This can be a physical book from the library or a digital book. (See Ms. Bullman's section of the newsletter about summer reading opportunities.) Read to your child or have your child read to you! After you are done reading, talk about what happened in the story and discuss their favorite part.
2 - Do some small tasks to review some reading and math skills.
Write the numbers 1-20
Count out 10 toys and find different ways to make 10
Skip count by 10’s, 5’s, and/or 2’s to 100
Count to the highest number you can count to
Find a toy or item that starts with 5 letters of the alphabet (and do the next five the next day, until you finish the alphabet)
Write everyone’s name in your family
Draw letters or words in the dirt outside
Find letters outside as you drive
Find words you can read on cereal boxes
Read environmental text - words on signs, talk about names of letters on signs and what sounds they make.
Get some flashcards at the dollar store to work on addition facts for lower grades and multiplication facts for upper grades.
3 - Work on writing by keeping a summer journal. Students can keep up with their writing skills by journaling about the different things they are doing during the summer. They can also add a drawing for fun!
We are so proud of all of our Torchlighters and wish you all a very happy, safe, and fun summer!
To our 5th graders, we will miss you! Make us proud and do great things in middle school.
To the rest of our students, we will see you all next year!
