Welcome to our Townley Torchlighter Family Newsletter.
This is a look at this month including updates, announcements and upcoming events.
We are off to a great start! Thank you, families, for supporting the community by crossing crosswalks and staying in your cars during arrival and dismissal. Please continue to be mindful of the school zone with speed and staying off your cell phone. We have several pedestrian crossings near the campus, and our students range from 4-year-olds to 11-year-olds. Thank you for paying attention to those serving as crossing guards at these intersections. The exit out the front drive is a right turn only from 7:00-8:00am and again 3:00-4:00pm. We want everyone to stay safe when coming to and leaving campus. Thank you again for your diligence in keeping our Torchlighter community safe.
Within the building, we have been talking about our routines and setting goals. Beginning of the year, students are participating in a variety of assessments to see where they are starting. Teachers will talk with students about the results and set goals. We believe in taking the time to set goals and when we achieve growth, we celebrate. Students who are new to Townley are receiving a special keychain to hold their spirit sticks. Spirit sticks are one way we celebrate our students' successes. We also celebrate our students who show responsibility, respect, and readiness with Golden Tickets. Students will have goal folders in their classroom to set goals for the year and track growth. I cannot wait to see how we grow this school year!
Our Mission: At Townley, we ensure that all Torchlighters will learn and grow.
Our Vision: Torchlighters will shine brighter one day at a time.
We value: Relationships, Kindness & Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance & Growth, Respectfulness, Responsibility, and A Positive Learning Environment
Here are a few important dates and reminders:
School hours are 7:45am - 3:15pm. Cafeteria Doors open at 7:15 for all students; other doors open at 7:30 for student arrival.
Students dress in uniform. Fridays are Townley Spirit Day. Students are welcome to wear Townley t-shirts, Irving ISD shirts, college t-shirts or uniform polos and blue jeans, no holes. We will notify families of additional dress days throughout the school year.
Dismissal Safety Protocols: Students will stay in the building if they are car riders or parent walk ups. You must have a tag to pick up your child during the dismissal process for car riders and parent pick-ups. Please remain in your car or at the designated Parent Walk-Up Station. Car Tags are for car riders only. Car Tags will not be used for the Parent Walk-Up Station. Thank you for your patience as we work to get everyone home safely.
If you are picking up your child from school before 2:30, you will need your ID. Students will not be released after 2:30.
Cell Phones: We’re so proud of our students for doing a great job last year following the rules.
Students should not use cell phones or any other electronic devices during the school day, in line with district and campus policies.
All personal devices, including cell phones and smartphones, must be turned off while on campus and kept in their backpack.
If a student is found using their phone during school hours, it will be collected and taken to the front office. A parent or guardian will need to come to the school to pick up the device.
For more detailed information, you can refer to our Student Code of Conduct.

Data, Data, Data - This is a key word for growth. We have started testing already so that we can get clear picture of our students' levels at the beginning of the year. We need your to talk to your child about how they are feeling about the content and if and where are they struggling when it comes to the lesson content. The B.O.Y. MAP tests is the beginning of the year test in Reading, Math, Science (5th), PE (3rd-5th), Music & Art (2nd & 5th). This data will help teachers understand the academic successes your child is showing and the areas that they need help. You can feel free to talk with your child's teacher about how your child did on these assessments and how you can help them at home.
Attendance is very important. All students need to be in school Everyday on time. The tardy bell rings at 7:45 am. If your child arrives at this time or afterwards, your child is late and you need to come and sign your child in. There are consequences if your child is late three or more times because they are missing instructional minutes that will need to be made up. Also, school is over at 3:15 pm and all students need to be picked up by 3:30 pm. Thank you so much for allowing us to educate your child this year and you partnering with us.
“Things get done only if the data we gather can inform and inspire those in a position to make difference.”
― Mike Schmoker,
It has been another wonderful month of learning, laughter, and growth at our school. Our students continue to amaze us every day with their kindness, hard work, and school spirit.
Here are a few highlights and positive shout-outs from around our campus:
Acts of Kindness: Our staff noticed so many students stepping up to help classmates, from sharing school supplies to welcoming new friends.
Academic Focus: Walkthroughs in our classrooms revealed incredible focus. Our students are tackling new concepts in reading and math with great determination and curiosity.
Warmly,
Mrs. S Vela

NEWS FROM YOUR FRONT OFFICE
Students pay a small fee of $2.00 and receive a pass to wear school appropriate clothing of their choice on Tuesday, September 1st!
Students who do not purchase the pass must wear their regular, full school uniform.
Starting September 1st, all car and walk-up tag replacements will be available for purchase in the front office for $1 each (cash only). Please be sure you have your ID.
Parents will have the opportunity to come and enjoy lunch with their Torchlighter toward the end of September. Families are more than welcome to bring outside food for their lunch visit. Due to limited seating, we will be sending out a sign-up link for each grade level. Sign-ups will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. All families will enjoy lunch with their child in the designated outdoor area at the picnic tables.
To ensure that all families have an opportunity to visit, we kindly ask that you limit lunch visits with your child to no more than once per month. We appreciate your consideration and cooperation in helping us make this opportunity available to everyone.
We will send out the sign-up link in mid-September. We look forward to welcoming you!
Students are considered late if they are not in the building at 7:45. Tardy tracking will begin week 2. Students with 3 or more late arrivals in a week will have Friday lunch detention :( beginning next week (8/31) Late students are missing out on valuable class time and activities when they are not present and we want to be on top of our schedule from the start.
We are attendance HEROs: HERE, EVERYDAY, READY, and ON TIME!
If you need to pick up your student(s) early for an appointment, please do so before 2:30 pm. Make sure you have your ID.
If your student is absent, please call the office or email Faith. Only a doctor's notes will be accepted after the third absence in order to excuse.
IMPORTANT!! Use your HAC account to stay on top of grades and attendance. If you have not updated enrollment there yet, please do ASAP.

Home Access Center (HAC). This is the best way to keep informed with your student's attendance and grades. Progress reports and report cards are only viewable through HAC. Your password was just updated with registration, log in often to keep it active.
Also, please do not "stop" text messages from Townley Staff or your teacher. You will miss out valuable communication.
Please contact the front office for any questions regarding HAC at 972-600-6800.
News from Nurse Brown
Hello everyone! We've already got some germs running around, please teach your students proper handwashing!
A few reminders:
PLEASE send your child to school with a change of clothes. Accidents happen and we'd rather be prepared than have to keep students out of the classroom to wait for extra clothes.
Remember - if your child vomits or has a fever the night before school, please keep them home. They should be fever and vomit free for 24 hours without the use of medicine.
As I mark students off my delinquent list for vaccinations, please keep in mind that current vaccinations or exemption forms are required for your student to stay in school. After the 3rd letter is sent home, students are at risk for being withdrawn. If your student receives new shots, please email them to me or drop them off in the front office, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Please don't hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns, I hope to have a very productive year & that includes keeping in touch with you guys!

Building Reading Fluency at Home
Improving our reading skills is similar to improving skills playing a game, sport, or instrument. It requires practice. To be a better reader, we need to practice.
Your help at home is so important to help your child become a fluent reader. What does it mean to be a fluent reader? A fluent reader can read at a pace similar to speaking, with expression, and reading words correctly.
Here are three ways you can help your child become a fluent reader:
*Echo reading - You read a sentence and then let your child echo and read that same sentence.
*Partner reading - You and your child take turns reading together. You can read a page and then let your child read the next page.
*Repeated reading - Listen to your child read a sentence (paragraph, or page). If it is not smooth and they struggle with a few words, help them and then have them read it again until they read it smoother with fewer pauses and more accurate pronunciation of words.
Reading with your child allows them to improve their reading skills and also allows you to spend time together as a family! Happy Reading!
