Torchlighter Times

Welcome to our Townley Torchlighter Family Newsletter.

This is a look at this month including updates, announcements and upcoming events.

Thank you families for helping your Torchlighters finish the year with gusto before they head into summer vacation.

We have many things happening in May.  Grades 3-5 have one more STAAR test, math, on May 2.  We our final All-Pro Dad event on May 18.  We will have PTA start the evening at 5pm and then we will transition All Pro Dad.  Mmany grade levels have field trips planned.  If you are interested in serving as a chaperone, make sure you have completed the District Volunteer Application.

Thank you to everyone who purchased a Torch RUN T-shirt or made a donation to bucket.  The Townley community is so generous.  Again, thank you to all of those who participated.  Your child can wear their shirt throughout the remainder of the year on Thursdays.  We have not heard about the results, but we are so proud of our efforts.

Families, we invite you to continue the discussions at home with your Torchlighters about how we can shine brightly and be a positive influence in the world by showing kindness to others, doing our best on our work, and be ready each day for new learning.  We encourage our Torchlighters each day to: Be Respectful.  Be Responsible. Be Ready.

Our campus is supporting students social and emotional learning through Capturing Kids' Hearts. Thank you for continuing to talk to your child about their academics and social emotional needs.  Here is the May Parent Newsletter: English / Spanish  This month's focus is Integrity.

Let's think ahead and start designing a Townley T-Shirt for the school year 2023 - 2024.  It should be fun and something students will want to wear.  I will get the theme from Principal Clark.

NEWS FROM YOUR TESTING ADMINISTRATOR

-Just a few reminders-

STAAR Math-May 2nd(3rd-5th)

*NEWS FROM YOUR FRONT OFFICE *

-Just a few reminders-

Cafeteria door opens at 7:15 am.

Other doors open at 7:30 am and students head to classrooms.

The tardy bell rings at 7:45 am. Students are considered late if they are not in the building at 7:45.  They are missing out on valuable class time and activities when they are not present.

Be here, everyday, ready and ON TIME!

Don't forget to have your car tag for dismissal.

-ID Check Required- (Read Below)

We have changed our procedures at the entry door. We ask that you have your ID ready to show to the camera.  After you have stated your business, you will wait on the porch while we take care of your request.  Only visitors with an appointment will be allowed to enter the school building.   In the case of dropping things off, we will have a table to leave items for delivery.  Thank you for your patience as we work through procedures that provide the most safety to our students.

-Early Pick Up -

The cut off time for early  pick up is 2:30.

If your child for any reason needs to be pick up early, we do recommend picking up before 2:30. After 2:30, students will be preparing to leave and will start to be lead  into to the halls to be dismissed.

News from the Nurse

Hi!  The flu bug has slowed down at Townley - yay!  However, I am still seeing quite a few ill children with various other infections.

You can help keep the infection rate down by following a few of these guidelines:

If your child has a temperature over 100.0F,  keep your child home.  Please do not give a fever reducing medicine, like Tylenol or Ibuprofen, and send to school.  When one does this, the child is still contagious but not showing symptoms.

Teach your child correct handwashing: soap, water, friction (rubbing hands together) for 20 seconds.  I had my children do this when they got home from school evey day, and I noticed a decrease in illnesses.

Keep your child hydrated.  Water works wonders.

Keep a sleep routine - I know this is hard with soccer practice, dance classes, etc., but stay firm with a sleep routine.

Make sure your emergency contact phone numbers are up to date at school.  We need to be able to contact you.

Also, remember we have access to Telehealth through Childrenshealth.  If needed, we can make an appointment with them, and I can perform flu and strep tests.  Please learn more @ www.childrens.com/schools  Parents who have used this, tell me they love it.  This is not to replace your primary care doctor, but to help out when you are unable to obtain an appointment.  I have been receiving positive feedback from parents who have used this.  If you have questions about this, contact me and I will tell you all about it.

I am here for your children.  Always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.  If you have a question about sending your child - if he/she is well enough to be at school - call me.

Library News

Hello from the Townley Library!

I hope all of your children told you about "Poem in Your Pocket" day and shared a poem with you!  I have so enjoyed my first year at Townley with all of your wonderful students.  I can't believe the school year is coming to a close.  All student books are due back on May 12, but I will continue to see classes for library lessons, technology fun, and read alouds.

Please put 5:00 p.m. on May 18th on your calendar.  During the All Pro Dads event in the Townley cafeteria, two librarians from the Irving Public Library will be here!  You can get a public library card that night.  It's free!  They will also let you know how to sign your child up for all the fun during the Summer Reading Challenge, hosted by the Irving Public Libraries.

This summer, please take advantage of the e-books Irving ISD has purchased through the SORA app.  If you would like instructions on how to access this excellent resource, the Irving ISD Library Coordinator has created this helpful guide:   https://view.genial.ly/61001835a1f3a50d8cf614d9/guide-sora-ebooks

The district did not get funding to send home summer reading packets this year, but I am collecting new and gently used book donations.  I hope to send at least one book home with each child this summer.  If you have books you could donate, they would be greatly appreciated.

 Happy reading,

Carol Bullman

May Flowers Bring STEM Showers! Here we are in the last month of the 2022-2023 school year! We are still moving full- STEM ahead. Our STEM Lab has been a buzz with busy little bees learning the different STEM activities prepared each week.  It has been a journey of learning and growing with your children these last few months. We still have much more to learn and explore as we journey on through this last stretch.   We will continue our STEM Lab rotations during the week and after we complete testing.  I look forward to winding the year down with creative activities that stretch the students' imaginations and creativity. Happy Month of May!

Warm Regards,

Instructional Interventionists Info & Tips

Rebecca Rice, Reading Interventionist //

 Lee Ann Watson, Math Interventionist

Summer is coming and along with it,  the promise of more relaxing days!  Unfortunately, students may lose about two months of the math skills they learned during the previous school year if they don't practice them.  Fortunately, there are activities you can do with them that can be enjoyable while also developing their mathematical thinking.

Here are some ideas:

Play family board games.  A few games that will develope mathematical thinking are Rummikub, Set, Connect 4, Ticket to Ride, Soduko, and Uno.  There are many more!

Play outdoors!  Play Hopskotch or Jump Rope and count or chant "1,2 Buckly my shoe.  3,4 Shut the door.  5,6  Pick up sticks.  7,8 Lay them straight, 9,10 Begin again."

Spend time family bonding with the following activities:

Bake together and let children help measure ingredients.  It's a great way to practice fractions and time.

Shop together.  Give children some actual money to manage.  Students are still expected to be able to recognize and count real coins and dollar bills.

Remember, we all use math in the real world.  With a little thought and effort, you can further your child's learning while having a great time with them.

Happy Summer!

Hello Townley Families!

We  had an amazing 22-23 school year at Townley!   We offered at Townley over 68 parenting classes both in English and Spanish, such as Volunteer Orientation, Strong Families, Disconnect to Connect, Home Access, Budgeting/Finance, All Pro Dad and many more.   At our District level we offered our Path to College series, Coffee and Me Time and our Community Resource Fair.

We reached to 331 families.  Thank you for doing the parent survey, this gave us the opportunity to better serve our Townley community.
