Welcome to our Townley Torchlighter Family Newsletter.
This is a look at this month including updates, announcements and upcoming events.
Wow! What a crazy end to the month of January with the weather. In the classrooms, we were talking about goal setting with our students with academics. Teachers and students are discussing what they have been learning in math and reading and where the data showed they were in the fall. This is then used to set a new goal. When we set goals, we think about how to make them achievable and the steps we need to take to reach them. When we reach these goals, we celebrate and then set new ones. This is how we will shine brighter one day at a time. We had so many students who met their growth goals for K-5 MAP Math and 3-5 MAP Reading. These students were able to continue their celebration with a free dress day.
Going in the different classrooms, I am so proud of all our students are doing. The academic conversations are exciting to listen in and hear students explain their thinking on how they solved a math problem or connections they have made with characters in different reading units. We are growing, but we are not done yet!
Townley is hosting a Math Night in February. This is a time for families to come together to play and support students with building math fluency and problem solving skills. Come check it out on Feb. 5.
February is a great time to reflect on the friendships we have formed. Torchlighters have been known for showing kindness and learning to be a good teammate. Students have been celebrated through out the year with winning points for their Tribes, earning Golden Tickets and special spirit sticks. Classroom celebrations for celebrating Friendship are planned for students on Thursday, February 12. Teachers will send home more information about the upcoming festivities
Families, thank you for your helping with our dismissal transition due to construction. Please use cross walks. If you are in a car, please be careful with student, staff and families who are walking. Parking lots should not be used as turn arounds. Help keep our Townley Community safe.
Our Mission: At Townley, we ensure that all Torchlighters will learn and grow.
Our Vision: Torchlighters will shine brighter one day at a time.
We value: Relationships, Kindness & Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance & Growth, Respectfulness, Responsibility, and A Positive Learning Environment
Here are a few important dates and reminders:
School hours are 7:45am - 3:15pm. Cafeteria Doors open at 7:15 for all students; other doors open at 7:30 for student arrival.
Dress Code: Monday- Thursday students wear school uniforms. Fridays are Townley Spirit Days. Students are welcomed to wear Townley t-shirts, other Irving ISD shirts or uniform polos and blue jeans. *No holes in jeans. More information on the student dress code can be located on the district's website. Special dress days will be communicated to families, and if students choose not to participate, the expectation is students are in uniform.
Dismissal Safety Protocols: Students will stay in the building if they are car riders or parent walk ups. You must have a car tag to pick up your child during the dismissal process for car riders and colored parent walk up tag for parent pick-ups. Please remain in your car or at the designated Parent Walk-Up Station. Please refrain from bringing your dog to campus for arrival and dismissal. We want to keep all Torchlighters safe- physically and emotionally.
Safety Drills: While at school, continuing to keep all Torchlighters safe is a priority. We talk about and practice different safety drills including: fire, shelter in place (for bad weather), and lockdown. As a family discuss these drills and create a plan for your home as well.
Early Pick Up: If you are picking up your child from school before 2:30, you will need your ID. Students will not be released after 2:30.
Cell Phones: We’re so proud of our students for doing a great job following the rules, and we truly appreciate your support in helping us maintain this!
Students should not use cell phones or any other electronic devices during the school day, in line with district and campus policies.
All personal devices, including cell phones and smartphones, must be turned off while on campus and kept in their backpack.
If a student is found using their phone during school hours, it will be collected and taken to the front office. A parent or guardian will need to come to the school to pick up the device.
For more detailed information, you can refer to our Student Code of Conduct.
Thank you, families, for allowing us to be a part of your child's educational journey. We cannot wait to see your child #ShineBrightly this school year.

Being On-Time Matters!
Dear Torchlighter Families,
We kindly ask families to help ensure students arrive at school on time each day. The tardy bell rings at 7:45 a.m., and students who arrive after this time miss critical learning, classroom routines, and relationship-building moments that set the tone for the entire day.
Research shows that students who arrive on time have higher academic achievement, better focus, stronger behavior, and improved attendance overall. Morning routines include reviewing the day’s objectives, practicing foundational skills, and connecting with teachers and classmates—missed time that cannot be fully made up later and often leads to learning gaps.
Parents play a powerful role in student success. Being on time teaches responsibility, accountability, and respect, skills students carry with them well beyond the classroom. Thank you for partnering with us to give every child the best possible start to their school day!
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” — Benjamin Franklin
The month of love, kindness, and friendship! We invite you this month to show a little extra Townley' kindness to family and friends this month. Be the great friend that you would want for yourself. As you go through this month, stay focus on learning and growing. Nothing beats pushing yourself to be greater than you were yesterday and to always love yourself.
Some students have taken the middle of the year MAP Test, Benchmarks, and will take the STAAR Field Test on the 3rd. Our teachers will continue covering strategies that will help your child write more and to build a greater understanding of the grade-level TEKS. We are also asking for your continuous support with making sure that your child is attending school on time daily and that they are here keeping up with there work. Please keep in mind that phones should not be on or carried around during the school day. Just a reminder that your child's missing coat, water bottle, or lunch kit may be in our lost and found outside of the cafeteria. Townley loves working in partnership with all of our parents to make sure that every child is a successful student. Thank you for your support.

NEWS FROM YOUR FRONT OFFICE
Students are considered late if they are not in the building at 7:45. Parents will need to come inside and sign their student in. Kids are missing out on valuable class time and activities when they are not present. Be here, everyday, ready and ON TIME!
The perfect attendance dress days have been such a hit! The kids look fabulous and there have been 300+ participating. That is amazing--Thank you parents for working hard on instilling good habits in our Torchlighters. Will your student get to participate next time? You will receive a message from Gallaga about details if they do :)
When your students appointment is early, bring them to school after. With a doctors note they will receive credit for the whole day.
If you need to pick up your student(s) early, please do so before 2:30.
Always have your ID available when requesting entry to the building or picking up a student from the office.
If your student is absent, please call the office or email Faith. A doctor's note is requested for three consecutive absences or any absence after four per semester (IISD Student Handbook pg 36)

Home Access Center (HAC). This is the best way to keep informed with your student's attendance and grades. Progress reports and report cards are only viewable through HAC. Your password was just updated with registration, log in often to keep it active.
Also, please do not "stop" text messages from Townley Staff or your teacher. You will miss out valuable communication.
Please contact the front office for any questions regarding HAC at 972-600-6800.
News from Nurse Brown
Flu/RSV/Cold season is making its debut!
Please remind students to wash their hands. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent illness; handwashing should take 20 seconds. One way students can remember this is by singing Happy Birthday twice!
Cover those coughs & sneezes!
If your student is running a fever or has diarrhea/is vomiting, keep them home so they can rest and recover to make a strong return to school. Students should be vomit, fever, and diarrhea free without medication for 24 hours before they can return.
This includes when students are sent home with these conditions from the clinic; when this occurs please make plans to keep them home the following day.
Please continue to send extra clothes with your students, just in case of an accident, we like to be prepared so they can change quickly and go back to class.
With colder weather coming along, students with asthma may have more frequent exacerbations. If your pediatrician recommends a change in your student's inhaler regimen, please let me know so I can administer their medication in a timely manner.
Please call or email with questions or concerns, thanks!

National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.
National School Counseling Week, Feb 2-6, highlights the unique contributions of school counselors within U.S. school systems and their tremendous impact on student success.
Please thank our school counselors, Mrs. Weempe and Mrs. Blood.
Townley Counselors
Attendance is such an important factor in student achievement!
When children attend school consistently, they are better able to build strong academic skills, maintain routines, and develop positive relationships with peers and teachers. Even missing a few days can make it harder for students to keep up with lessons and feel confident in the classroom.
We understand that absences are sometimes unavoidable due to illness or family circumstances. When possible, we encourage scheduling appointments and activities outside of school hours and ensuring students arrive on time each day.
Thank you for your help in bringing our amazing Torchlighters to school each and every day. Our 5th graders are also learning about Middle School course selections and other important information.
Let us know if we can help you or your family in anyway.
Thanks,
Mrs. Weempe & Mrs. Blood

As part of our ongoing work to support a positive and caring school community, this month guidance lessons are about kindness, respect, and friendship.
We are encouraging children to:
Use kind words and actions
Include others and look out for classmates who may feel left out
Solve problems peacefully and ask for help when needed
Celebrate differences and treat everyone with respect
These lessons are most powerful when reinforced both at school and at home. We appreciate your partnership in continuing these conversations with your child and modeling kindness in everyday moments.
We want to maintain a safe, welcoming environment where every child feels valued and supported.
Students at Townley Elementary are learning the importance of being respectful, responsible and ready at all times. Encourage your child to tell you about ways they can earn Torch Tickets by displaying the 3 R's at school.

Dear Townley Families,
I'm so proud of the students pictured above for reading 5 or more Texas Bluebonnet Books and voting for their favorite! They came to a special Bluebonnet party in the library! Because of their votes, a worthy children's book author will win the prestigious Bluebonnet award.
February is Black History Month. Many of our read-alouds this month will be in celebration!
Also this month, some of our 4th graders will be presenting a living "Wax Museum" in the library, featuring famous inventors and innovators. If your student has been engaged in this research, look for more details soon.
With library joy,

Reading in Science and Math
As we work on growing to be stronger readers and writers, it is important that we take time to read and write about science and math. We can apply our reading skills like predicting, cause and effect, sequence, and vocabulary development as we read and write about things we learn in stories about math and science.
As you read about things in science and math, you will be reading nonfiction text. Nonfiction means that the information is factual (real or true).
Nonfiction text can be read differently than fiction stories. You can use the table of contents to choose what topic you want to read about. Notice the different text features that are in science and math books. You may see an index, glossary, charts, photographs, and captions. Take a moment to look at these with your child and talk about how these text features can help a reader understand the topic better. As you read, allow your child to talk to you about the new and interesting information that they learn. You might want to start a Science/Math journal at home to write and draw pictures about the new information that you learn together.
Here are some nonfiction math and science books you can look for at your public or school library. (Sometimes you can find read alouds of books on YouTube for free.)
