2024 CEDAR HIGH TRACK AND FIELD STATE QUALIFIERS

The Cedar Reds track and field teams finished up their spring season at the Utah State Track and Field Championships this past weekend with a fifth place finish for the boys team and a ninth place finish for the girls team. Four school records were broken this weekend beginning with the boys and girls 4x200 relays each shattering the previous record. The girls team of Emmy Schoppmann, McKenlee Mogensen, Leah Albrecht, and Abby Illian ran a time of 1:45.39 for a third place finish overall. The boys team of Rueben Vinson, JT Jeter, McKoy Smith, and Ammon York finished second overall with a time of 1:28.76. Individually, Ammon York broke the school record in the 400 with a time of 49.10 and was crowned state champion. Also being crowned a state champion was senior Kiara Hansen, breaking the school record in the discus with a throw of 138’1. Other point contributions on the girls side came from Kiara Hansen (SP, 4th), McKenna Twitchell (DT, 7th), Ella Fielding (JT, 7th), a fifth place finish by the 4x400 relay (Mogensen, Hall, Guillen, J. York), a 7th place finish by the 4x100 relay (Schoppmann, Mogensen, Hall, A. Illian) and a 7th place finish by the 4x800 relay (Heaton, I. Illian, Corry, Guillen). Other point contributions on the boys side came from Jake Storie (LJ, 3rd), McKoy Smith (300H, 4th), Ammon York (200, 7th), Nate Briggs (HJ, 7th), Jake Storie (JT, 8th), a second place finish for the boys 4x400 relay (Briggs, Barrows, Davidson, A. York), and a sixth place finish for the boys 4x100 relay (Storie, Jeter, Crenshaw, Vinson).

Region 9 Track and Field Championships
The Region 9 Track and Field Championships took place over two days at Pine View High School. There were a number of strong performances on both the boys and girls sides of the competition.
For the Lady Reds, Kiara Hansen won the girls discus and finished second in the shot put to lead the team to a runner-up finish. Ella Fielding threw a lifetime best 122-10 to finish runner up in the javelin while Jaylin York continued with another strong performance and runner up finish in the girls 400. Additionally, the girls 4x400 relay team of McKenlee Mogensen, Anna Hall, Scarlett Guillen, and Jaylin York finished as runner up region champions. Third place finishers for the Lady Reds included Samantha Heaton with a lifetime best 5:11.98 in the 1600, Abby Illian (200), and the girls 4x100 relay (Schoppmann, Mogensen, Hall, A. Illian) with a season best time of 50.34. Other scoring performances came from Emmy Schoppmann finishing 7th in the 200, Abby Illian finishing 7th in the 100 hurdles, and McKenlee Mogensen and Scarlett Guillen finishing fourth and sixth respectively in the 400. Freshman Kendee Corry placed 7th in the 1600 and received a bid to the state meet in the 3200 finishing 5th. Callie Peterson ran a season best time in the 3200 to finish 8th. Also receiving a bid to the state meet was freshman Alex Esplin finishing 5th in the javelin while Kamber Briggs finished 7th in the event. McKenna Twitchell had a strong performance in the discus finishing 5th and rounding out the scoring for the Lady Reds in the field events were Jaylin York (LJ, 7th), McKinlee Munford (HJ, 7th), and Adelin Dalton (HJ, 7th).
The boys team finished 6th in Region 9 led by strong relay performances over the two days. The boys 4x200 relay team of Rueben Vinson, JT Jeter, McKoy Smith, and Ammon York broke the school record with a time of 1:29.05. The boys 4x400 relay team of Nate Briggs, Caleb Barrows, Charlie Davidson, and Ammon York finished second with a season best time of 3:28.91 while the boys 4x100 relays finished 5th. Individual scoring performances came from McKoy Smith (200, 2nd/ 100H, 4th), Ammon York (400, 2nd), Nate Briggs (HJ, 3rd), Caleb Barrows (800, 6th), Charlie Davidson (800, 7th), and TreDyn Elliott (LJ, 8th). Reuben Vinson also secured an automatic qualifying time in the boys 200 with a lifetime best of 23.00.
Up next for the Reds will be the culmination of the spring season as they head to the Utah State Track and Field Championships May 16-18th in Provo, Utah.
BYU INVITATIONAL
The Cedar Reds track and field team traveled to Provo this weekend for the 114th PACS BYU Invitational. Two school records fell this weekend with Ammon York running a 22.06 in the 200 to break the overall school record while Sam Simmons broke the freshman record in the 300H with a time of 41.16. The boys 4x100, 4x200, and 4x800 relays and the girls 4x100 and 4x800 relays all improved upon their season best, automatic state qualifying times this weekend. Samantha Heaton ran an automatic state qualifying time and lifetime best of 5:17.40 in the girls 1600, Kenzie Bird posted an automatic state qualifying mark in the long jump with a jump of 16’0.25, and Anna Hall posted an automatic state qualifying mark of 1:00.46 in the 400.
Running lifetime bests in their respective events on the boy’s side were Ammon York (22.06/200), McKoy Smith (14.79/110H, 38.08/300H, 22.09/200), Sam Simmons (23.40/200, 41.16/300H), JT Jeter (22.67/200), Reuben Vinson (23.29/200), Braysen Williams (44.67/300H), Tate Jewkes (23.92/200, 53.45/400), Trevin Carter (53.45/400), Caleb Barrows (2:01.13/800), Charlie Davidson (2:02.50/800), Britton Butterfield (2:04.39/800, 4:36.36/1600), Cole Hanson (2:06.88/800), and Tyler Corry (2:07.87/800). Nate Briggs notched a season best 5’11 in the high jump, just one inch shy of an automatic state qualifying mark.
The Lady Reds also turned in a number of lifetime bests including Samantha Heaton (5:17.40/1600, 2:26.94/800), Kendee Corry (11:54.12/3200), McKenlee Mogensen (27.23/200, 1:00.09/400), Scarlett Guillen (1:00.97/400), Abby Illian (25.84/200), Emmy Schoppmann (26.71/200) and Bailey Ward (28.23/200).
Coming up next for the Reds is the Region 9 track and field Championships at Pine View High School. Athletes advance to the state meet with either an automatic state qualifying mark or finishing in the top five at region in their event. So far this season, the boy’s side has state qualified 13 individual marks and all four relays and the girl’s side has 21 individual automatic state qualifying marks and all four relays as well. The state meet will take place May 16-18th in Provo, Utah.
Region 9 JV Championships
The Cedar High JV track and field team finished up their 2024 season at the Region 9 JV Championships at Desert Hills High School. The boys team finished 5th in the region while the girls team finished 6th. Scoring performances came from all of the relays for the Reds with the girls 4x100 and boys 4x200 relays both finishing 2nd. The boys and girls 4x400 relays finished third while the boys 4x100 and the girls 4x200 relays finished 5th. The dependable relay athletes of Addie Whitelaw, Sara Green, Maddie Marriott, Lexi Zavoico, Adriana Fernandez, Addie Grimm, Blythe Anderson, Jasmine Delgado Garcia, Mariona Guinea, Mason Johnston, Caleb Brinkerhoff, Max Jarvis, Dawson Cowley, Derringer Shirley, Cannon Sullivan, Logan Nelson, and Michael Clark put in extra effort this meet and all season to make these relays successful. Alyza Merrill turned in a winning performance in the 3200. Individual scoring performances also came from a number of athletes with Alex Esplin finishing second in the girls javelin, Christian Hanuschik finishing second in the boys 3200, Joel Wilson finishing second in the boys long jump, and Breven Williams finishing 2nd in the boys 300 hurdles. Third place finishers included Maddux Harris in the 400, Jaxon Olmstead in the discus, and Addelyn Vaughn in the 300 hurdles. Fourth place finishers included Cody Larkin in the 3200 and Abigail Daynes in the high jump. Rounding out the scoring for the Reds was Cooper Anderson (5th, 3200), Tanner Street (5th, 400), Logan Nelson (6th, long jump), Erica Bromley (6th, high jump), Lilianna Hahn (6th, high jump), Erik Sonerholm, (6th, high jump), Abigail Daynes (6th, 100 hurdles), Braxton Hess (6th, shot put), Tamara Escamilla (7th, long jump), Sara Green (7th, 200), Zach Olson (7th, 400), Maddux Harris (8th, 200), McKay Voorhees (8th, 3200), and Lexi Zavoico (8th, 300 hurdles). Dixie Invitational
The Cedar High track and field team saw a number of highlights on both the boys and girls teams this weekend at the Dixie Invitational. Leading the Reds with newly automatic state qualifying marks were Samantha Heaton in the 3200 with a lifetime best of 11:34.47, Jake Storie in the javelin with a throw of 154'4 and the boys 4x400 relay team of Ammon York, Nate Briggs, Caleb Barrows, and Tate Jewkes. The Lady Reds 4x200 relay team of Emmy Schoppmann, McKenlee Mogensen, Anna Hall, and Abby Illian set a new school record in the time of 1:47.17. Kiara Hansen continued to dominate the throwing events, winning both the discus and the shot put. Jaylin York improved upon her automatic mark in the 400, winning the event with a time of 59.38 and Sloan Hinman also improved upon her state qualifying mark with a lifetime best of 16'3.5 in the long jump. Scarlett Guillen also improved upon her 800 time finishing second with a time of 2:20.27. McKoy Smith also improved upon his 110H time with a lifetime best of 14.86 for third place. Smith also finished second in the 200 alongside Ammon York finishing 5th in the event. Abby Illian set a new Cedar High Freshman record in the 100 with a time of 12.62. She also finished 3rd in the 100H and 8th in the 300H. Rounding out the scoring for the Reds was Rueben Vinson (8th, 100), Nate Briggs (8th, HJ), Jake Storie (4th, LJ), TreDyn Elliott (7th, LJ), Adelin Dalton (6th, HJ), Kendee Corry (8th, Seeded 1600), Izzy Illian (8th, Seeded 800), Callie Peterson (6th, Varsity 800), and Alyza Merrill (5th, Varsity 1600). Up next for the Reds will be the JV Championships on Tuesday, April 30th and the BYU Invitational on May 3rd and 4th.
SUU COLISEUM CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Cedar High track and field team competed across town this weekend at the Coliseum Championships on the campus of Southern Utah University. Turning in automatic state qualifying marks for the first time this season for the Reds were Kamber Briggs in the javelin finishing 2nd with a throw of 108’11, McKenlee Mogensen in the 400 finishing 9th with a time of 1:00.49, Sam Simmons in the 110H with a time of 15.85, JT Jeter in the 100 with a time of 11.23 and in the 200 with a time of 22.86, and Abby Illian in the 100 finishing 8th with a time of 12.76. Running their first ever 2,000 Steeplechase were Sam Heaton (3rd) and Callie Peterson (6th). Kendee Corry finished 8th in the 1600 to round out the distance events for the Lady Reds. Scarlett Guillen turned in another stunning 800 meter performance winning the event in a time of 2:22.20 while Izzy Illian finished 7th with a season best 2:28.86. Abby Illian’s marks of 15.71 and 47.28 were good enough for 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the 100 and 300 hurdles to finish up the scoring on the track. The Lady Reds turned in a number of quality performances in the field events led by Kiara Hansen winning the discus throw and placing 2nd in the shot put. McKenna Twitchell finished 6th in the discus with a throw of 100’10. Kamber Briggs’ automatic qualifying mark in the javelin (2nd) led the scoring for the javelin throwers along with Ella Fielding finishing 4th and Jacee Garrett finishing 8th. In the long jump, Sloan Hinman finished 3rd and Kenzie Bird finished 6th while McKinlee Munford finished 6th in the high jump with a lifetime best of 4’10. On the boys side, the duo of McKoy Smith and Ammon York led the Reds with scoring performances in all of their events. Ammon York turned in a winning performance in the 400 with a personal best of 49.60 as well as a personal best in the 200 of 22.34 for 4th place. JT Jeter also turned in a personal best in the 200 meters of 22.86 for 6th place and placed 8th overall in the 100 with a time of 11.31. McKoy Smith turned in winning performances in both the 110 and 300 hurdles as well as running a personal best of 10.88 in the 100 for 3rd place. Sam Simmons broke the freshman hurdle record for the fourth time this season with a best time of 15.85. Tyler Corry and Cole Hanson placed 4th and 8th respectively in their first ever 2,000 Steeplechase. Jake Storie placed 6th for the Reds in the long jump and 7th in the javelin. In the high jump, Nate Briggs matched his season best of 5’10 for 3rd place and Owen Spencer jumped a personal best 5’8 for 5th place. Rounding out the scoring for the Reds was the 4x400 team of Trevin Carter, Tate Jewkes, Tanner Street, and Ammon York finishing 3rd.
The Lady Reds had a number of automatic state qualifying marks this weekend highlighted by Jaylin York finishing 2nd in the 400 (1:00.28), Sloan Hinman finishing 6th in the long jump (16-1.5), and Scarlett Guillen finishing 4th in the 800 with a lifetime personal best of 2:22.36. Anna Reed (16-0) and Adelin Dalton (15-9.75) also turned in automatic qualifying marks in the long jump. Adelin Dalton hit a season best and state qualifying mark of 5’0 in the high jump to finish 4th. Turning in an outstanding performance in the mile with a lifetime best of 5:23.21 was Samantha Heaton. Kendee Corry finished 3rd (5:39.35) and Callie Peterson rounded out the scoring for the Lady Reds in the mile with a 5:48.47. Emmy Schoppmann debuted in the 200 with a 7th place finish in a time of 27.40. McKenlee Mogensen finished 3rd in the 400 with a season best 1:00.95, Anna Hall finished 4th with a season best of 1:01.58 and Emmy Schoppmann rounded out the 400 stacked with Lady Reds in a time of 1:02.62. Kiara Hansen continued to dominate both the discus and shot put, turning in season best marks of 128’2 and 40’2.5 to win both events. McKenna Twitchell finished fourth in the discus (104’11) and 7th in the shot put (31’4). Ella Fielding won the girls javelin with an impressive throw of 115’ and Kamber Briggs finished 5th with a season best of 98’8.5. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Reds was the girls 4x400 finishing second.
Running automatic state qualifying times on the boys side were McKoy Smith in the 100 with a lifetime best of 11.17, the boys 4x100 relay (Cannon Raban, JT Jeter, Devin Crenshaw, Rueben Vinson) with a time of 44.05, and Jake Storie in the long jump with a jump of 20’7.25. Setting a new freshman record for the 110 Hurdles for the second time this season was Sam Simmons who finished 5th with a time of 16.45. He also placed second in the 300 Hurdles with a season best 42.12. Additionally, McKoy Smith won the boys 200 in a time of 22.18 and Ammon York finished 4th in the 200 with a time of 22.96 and second in the 400 with a time of 50.97. Finishing 7th and 8th respectively in the 800 were Charlie Davidson and Caleb Barrows. Cole Hanson finished 4th in the 1600 with a time of 4:36.54. Finishing off the point total for the Reds were the boys 4x200 (3rd) and 4x400 (1st) relays.
Three Cedar Reds athletes traveled to Provo, Utah this weekend to compete in their first ever multi event meet. Over two days, Nate Briggs was scored in ten events to finish strong in the boy’s decathlon. His most impressive finish was his tenth event, the 1500, finishing 2nd in a time of 4:31.16. He accumulated a number of season bests, including a 17.64 in the 110H and tied his season best of 5’10 in the high jump.
On the girls side, Leah Albrecht and Abby Illian competed in seven events over two days in the girls heptathlon. Albrecht finished 5th overall with impressive performances in the javelin (92’11), 200 (27.91), and 800 (2:35.14). Illian finished 6th overall, turning in an automatic state qualifying time in the 200 of 26.35 and finishing 2nd in the 800 (2:32.82). The competition totaled 14 hours over the course of two days.
On the boys side earning an invitation to the Arcadia Invitational was the boys 4x400 team as well as McKoy Smith in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Returning for his second year to Arcadia, McKoy Smith placed 22nd in the open division of the 110 hurdles and finished 8th in the Invitational section of the 300 hurdles. Running against the best teams in the country, the boys 4x400 team consisting of Ammon York, Charlie Davidson, Caleb Barrows, and McKoy Smith placed 8th in the seeded division.
On the girls side earning an invitation to the Arcadia Invitational was the girls 4x400 team as well as Leah Albrecht in the 300 hurdles. Leah Albrecht finished 42nd in the open division of the 300 hurdles. The girls 4x400 team consisting of McKenlee Mogensen, Emmy Schoppmann, Leah Albrecht, and Scarlett Guillen placed 24th in the open division running against some of the best 4x400 teams in the country.
Individual athletes scoring for the boys team at the Hurricane Invitational were Rueben Vinson in the 200 (4th), Nate Briggs in the high jump (4th) and the 400 (8th), and Jake Storie in the javelin (6th) and the long jump (7th). Additionally, the sprint medley team of Zach Olson, Dawson Cowley, Derringer Shirley and Nate Briggs placed 2nd while the boys 4x200 (Drage Briggs, Dylan Leavitt, Derringer Shirley, Dawson Cowley) and 4x400 (Trevin Carter, Tate Jewkes, Braysen Williams, Breven Williams) relay teams both placed 4th overall.
On the girls side, Kiara Hansen won the shot put with a season’s best of 36’6 and placed 2nd in the discus to lead the Lady Reds to a third place team finish. Other athletes scoring individually for the girls were Ella Fielding in the javelin (2nd), Kamber Briggs in the javelin (5th), Samantha Heaton in the 3200 (3rd), and Kendee Corry in the 1600 (7th) and the 3200 (8th). Jaylin York jumped a new personal best of 15’5 in the long jump (7th) and finished 4th in the 400. Abby Illian ran a new personal best and automatic state qualifying time of 16.37 in the 100 hurdles (6th) and also scored in the 200 (3rd), 100 (6th) and high jump (8th). Additionally, the girls 4x400 team of Anna Hall, Izzy Illian, Sam Heaton, and Kendee Corry placed first to finish the day for the Lady Reds.
Capping off the first day of competition at the Pine View Relays shortly after midnight, the CHS boys 4x200 (Ammon York, JT Jeter, Devin Crenshaw, and Rueben Vinson) and the 4x800 (Britton Butterfield, Caleb Barrows, Cole Hanson, and Charlie Davidson) both notched automatic state qualifying times. Also turning in automatic state qualifying marks on the first day of competition were the girls 4x800 (Samantha Heaton, Izzy Illian, Kendee Corry, and Scarlett Guillen), TreDyn Elliott in the long jump with a personal best of 20'8", Ammon York in the 200 with a personal best of 22.76, McKoy Smith in the 400 with a personal best of 50.19, Abby Illian in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 46.98 and Leah Albrecht with a season best 46.07. Kiara Hansen improved upon her previous automatic state qualifying marks in the discus and shot put while Ella Fielding also improved upon her previous automatic state qualifying mark in the javelin. McKoy Smith also improved upon his 300 hurdle state qualify mark running a season best 38.66. Additionally, the girls 4x100 (Emmy Schoppmann, McKenlee Mogensen, Leah Albrecht, and Abby Illian) and the girls 4x400 (Abby Illian, Emmy Schoppmann, Leah Albrecht, and Jaylin York) also turned in season's best and automatic state qualifying marks.

SNOW CANYON INVITATIONAL
The Cedar High boys and girls track teams had a number of notable performances this weekend at the Snow Canyon Invitational. McKoy Smith led the boys team with a third place finish in the 300H, a sixth place finish in the 110H and a 7th place finish and new personal best in the 200 of 22.76. Ammon York finished 8th with a season best 51.77 in the 400. The boys 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relay teams all placed in the top 8 while the girls 4x200 team of Emmy Schoppmann, McKenlee Mogensen, Leah Albrecht, and Abby Illian finished fourth and set a new school record of 1:47.58. Kiara Hansen led the individual performances on the girls side with a third place finish in the shot put and a sixth place finish in the discus.

-2024 Parent/Athlete Information Meeting: Monday, February 5th @ 6:30 PM
-Parents will need to register on registermyathlete.com which will require you to upload a physical (one time per school year) and birth certificate for your athlete. If you have already registered earlier this year for another activity or sport, you will just need to go back in and add Boys Track or Girls Track to your athlete's profile. This is most easily done on a desktop or laptop computer.
-Pay the $40 participation fee to Mrs. Stubbs in the CHS front office.
-Daily practice attendance will be required beginning on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024. There will be no required apparel purchases.
