Middle School Math Department

Students at this level are continuing in their development and understanding of mathematical concepts such as ratios and functions. We follow the Common Core Modules but frequently supplement with supportive materials to aid in the understanding. We recognize the challenge that this curriculum can be to students as well as parents which is why we make ourselves available during and after school. Please feel free to contact your student's teacher to determine the best time.

Our mission at Indian River is to provide a quality education in a safe learning environment where all students will be provided an opportunity to reach their full potential. As a math department, we hope to support students in their development in mathematics through making connections to prior knowledge, achieve fluency with basic math skills, and deepen their understanding while creating opportunities for students to apply what they have learned to real-world scenarios.

Students get the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and growth towards the end of the year with the NYS math assessment. Throughout the year, students are exposed to previous test questions and interim assessments in efforts to best prepare them. The exam is typically offered in the beginning of May and is done over the course of three days. There is no time limit and is given in a quiet setting. Students are provided a scientific calculator for portions of the exam and are expected to answer a number of multiple choice and extended response questions.
