Intent: Health Education and Indian River High School Health Education, is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lifestyles.
Goals:
> All students are safe, healthy, and academically successful.
> All students achieve or exceed the NYS and National Learning Standards for Health Education.
> All students to continue on their path to health and wellness and to carry on those practices into their life's journey.
Health Curriculum Main Focus:
The health education curriculum addresses the essential elements of the seven dimensions of health and wellness.
The purpose of this course is to engage students in the hands on examination of a variety of current health issues which are of interest to teenagers. Further, a deep understanding of these health issues allows students to make healthy choices in their own lives. In this project based, student-directed course topics may include:
Personal Health & Wellness
Mental & Emotional Health (stress, bullying, depression, suicide)
Physical Activity & Nutrition
Tobacco/Vaping, Alcohol & Other Drugs (substance abuse)
Building Healthy Relationships & Sexual Health
Violence Prevention & Safety (Internet Safety)
Other issues of student interest
A component of this course will be the expectation that students share knowledge and understandings gained in this learning with peers.
Endstate: To provide students, school, and community with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lifestyles, applying theories learned and put in practice in order to enhance the health, safety, and academic achievement of all learners.
