Literacy Collaborative is a classroom-based, comprehensive school-wide approach to literacy instruction designed to increase literacy achievement for all students. Literacy Collaborative provides a dynamic framework for reading, writing and word study. Additionally, the program allows for the training of a school-based literacy coordinator, as well as the development of a leadership team.
The literacy coordinator teaches children, demonstrates research-based teaching practices, provides in-class coaching and long-term professional development for teachers and coordinates ongoing data collection. The availability of Reading Recovery, a safety net for the lowest achieving first graders, is an integral part of implementation.
Guided Reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher, working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can all read similar levels of texts. The text is easy enough for students to read with skillful support.
Managed Independent (Centers) is a time that provides meaningful, authentic literacy learning experiences which allows children to practice reading and writing during the guided reading block, a very important rationale for managed independent learning is to provide students with the opportunities to be productive and independent literacy learners.
Writing Workshop is a time when the teacher provides students with explicit writing lessons. As the students write independently, they are supported by the teacher with individual conferences.
Interactive Read Aloud is an interactive experience that provides opportunities for students to engage with texts through listening and discussion to. promote deeper understanding about the meaning of texts. They can also learn skills and. strategies to use in their own reading.
Shared Reading is an interactive experience that occurs when students join in or share the reading of a book or other text while guided and supported by a teacher. The teacher explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression.
Community Writing (Shared Writing & Interactive Writing) is a process used to teach (usually younger) students how to write. The process involves the sharing of a pen between the teacher and students. It can be done in a one-on-one private lesson with a student, or with a small group of students.
Phonics/Word Study/Spelling is a time when students are shown how words "work." The teacher helps students make connections between sounds, letters and words.
