This club is for students who are interested in the Japanese art forms called anime and manga. Anime (アニメ) is the Japanese word for animation. Manga (マンガ) are comics and graphic novels. Though there are exceptions, the art is often characterized by large, expressive eyes and references to Japanese culture.
Just like movies, TV, and comic books from America, anime and manga come in a variety of genres. There is anime for little kids, teens, and adults. The IRMS Anime Club gathers to watch, read, and celebrate our love of anime, manga, and other aspects of Japanese culture.
Our activities change depending on the meeting theme. Members and the teacher adviser collaborate to plan meetings. The teacher adviser makes sure that the club is watching and reading materials that are appropriate for Middle School students. We work to explore a variety of genres to broaden our understanding of the art form and appeal to everyone's interests as much as possible.
We often schedule activities that are based around Japanese culture and language such as origami, haiku, and karaoke. In addition, we often schedule activities popular among anime fans such as cosplay (costumes), art contests, and fan fiction.
Any current student attending Indian River Middle School is very welcome! We work to make it a positive environment that respects students, faculty, and the Japanese culture that inspires us.
One reminder: you must sign up to attend meetings. This helps us plan ahead and keep the club from becoming too chaotic. Signup sheets will be on the club board by the large cafeteria.
We usually meet once or twice a month as possible. Anime Club is always after school at 2:30, and students take the 3:30 bus home. We may occasionally cancel due to weather or after school bus availability. We reschedule when able.
Check the calendar for more information! Don't forget to check the Middle School club board by the large cafeteria! You'll learn about upcoming meetings and activities throughout the year.
The club meets in Mrs. Phillips' room (211). You can learn more about your club adviser here. As a reminder, Mrs. Phillips' classroom and Anime Club are a safe space! Everyone is welcome no matter your culture, race, language, gender, etc.
