Students focus on phonemic and phonological awareness to develop reading skills.
Phonics knowledge and skills practice help students feel confident in their reading abilities.
Program overview
iQ's reading intervention (RI) program's goal is to provide K-3 students an opportunity to practice phonics skills with an instructor consistently. The RI program occurs during the school's targeted instruction windows. Students are assessed to determine RI eligibility or by homeroom teacher referral.
Eligible students opt in to attend afternoon small group sessions 2-3 times per week. In class, students complete assigned lessons in the engaging and fun platform, Lalilo.
All K-2 students in iQLA are assessed on phonics skills. Students meet with a specialist one-on-one in a virtual session. The specialist will share his/her screen to display the test and ask the student questions. The baseline test is used to identify potential students needing phonics support.
Below is what is assessed in each grade:
Kindergarten: tests could include letter name fluency, phonemic segmentation fluency, word reading fluency
1st graders: tests could include letter name fluency, phonemic segmentation fluency, word reading fluency, and oral reading fluency
2nd/3rd grade: tests could include oral reading fluency, nonsense word fluency, and word reading fluency
Students enrolled in reading intervention are complete benchmark tests to determine progress. Students can graduate out of reading intervention based on the benchmark scores. This data is shared with homeroom teachers throughout the school year and can help drive instruction.
