New Education Policy 2020
(8th September 2020)
Time : 4 pm to 5.30 pm
On 29th July 2020, the Union Cabinet approved New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) to the nation. The Policy is the result of 6 year of deliberations with stakeholders. The New Education Policy took 34 years to arrive after the last Education policy of 1986. During these more than three decades the world has witnessed tremendous socio, economic, technological and political development apart from the exponential demand for education from the marginalized section of society and proliferation of private sector in education arena. Analyzing the development during this period from higher education perspective reveals government’s failure to revamp the higher education at different point of time like Foreign Educational Institutions (regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill 2010 and Higher Education commission of India (Repeal of University Grants Commission Act) Act, 2018. In this background NEP has been introduced as one step towards revamping the education. PM Narendra Modi have imposed the faith that the new education policy will transform millions of lives towards making India a knowledge hub in an era where learning, research and innovation are important.
While the visions of NEP are holistic, it has to be seen how government address the diverse need of the state action and create a new benchmark of quality, equity and rights of the stakeholders. The current panel discussion is an attempt to appreciate the ambiguity if any in the NEP.
