On May 17, 2023, the 5th Young Composers Club of Clow Elementary School heard 7 of their own compositions come to life in a live performance/collaborative experience with student musicians from Waubonsie Valley High School! LET'S GOOO! For most of these students, these compositions are their first, EVER! Mr. Duker (band) and Mrs. Silberman (orchestra) generously gave their time and resources to make this event happen. The recordings and music scores are posted below for your enjoyment. And, from all the composers at YCC, thank you for watching our recital!
"My Volkswagen Van is a song that tells about a vintage Volkswagen Van crashing into a tree. When composing 'My Volkswagen Van', I wanted to express that when I was in Italy there was lightning and it struck a tree. The tree fell down on a car, and I wanted to express the disaster. I chose the Volkswagen Van because I like vintage things :). The Saxophone and the Trumpet in my song represented the beeps in the car at the end of the song when it crashed. An interesting thing I want for future composers and composers right now is to follow your heart. Never give up on your songs or your dreams. When I joined YCC, it was hard but then I never gave up and learned how to make a song. I just followed my heart. This is how I made my song." -Leo
"The inspiration for 'Snowmen Rock' is that I wrote it in the winter, and I thought it sounded like a snowman dancing. The inspiration for the clarinet was to resemble peace and the oboe represents kindness so together it makes a beautiful harmony." - Kylie
