1. What language should I take: American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, or Spanish?
It is best to consider what aspects of a language and its culture your are most drawn to. A key factor in succeeding in a World Languages class is interest; which leads to a higher motivation level and willingness to participate. Students are more apt to practice their language skills which in turn will help develop greater language acquisition and competency.
2. Should I start a World Languages freshman year or wait until later?
It is best to start freshman year. You will then have the opportunity to take all four years of a language to achieve a higher literacy level and apply for the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy. Many colleges waive their world languages requirement if a student has had four years of a language at the high school level. However, it is possible to start later and still meet the requirements of different colleges and universities. It is best to discuss your four year plan with your counselor to see how World Languages best fits in your schedule overall.
3. Can I take one year of a language and then one year of a different language to count for college or university admission?
Most colleges require at least two to three years of the SAME language. It is best to check with your counselor and specific colleges and universities about entrance requirements. Each one is different. Many schools also have their own World Languages exit requirements, meaning you will still have to take a language once you obtain admission.
*You may also enroll in more than one language during the year. Contact the World Languages Department Chair for more information.
4. What if I am a native speaker of one of the languages WV offers?
All WV World Languages classes are geared towards teaching non-native speakers. However, native speakers may benefit from our courses. Talk to the World Languages Department Chair about placement options. You may also consider studying a different language to broaden your linguistic knowledge and skills.
5. What clubs, field trips and study abroad programs are available for my child?
The availability of these programs changes from year to year. Please check with your teacher at the beginning of each school year to see what extra-curricular activities will be offered.
