Word Study is the comprehensive study of words and word formation that leads to the ability to spell and decode. Word study includes both grammar and high-frequency words.
Spelling Instruction Approach: This year, we will focus on spelling as part of a broader phonics and word study curriculum, emphasizing how students internalize spelling patterns rather than memorizing individual words. Our instruction will integrate phonemic awareness, decoding, and encoding skills into daily lessons, which align with students’ reading and writing development.
Developmental Spelling Practices: Instead of traditional spelling tests, students will engage in activities that promote understanding of word structure, including exploring syllables, spelling patterns, and word families. Our goal is to build students' long-term spelling skills through hands-on learning experiences, word sorts, and application in writing.
Assessment: Students’ progress in spelling will be assessed through their ability to apply spelling rules in their writing across various subjects, ensuring that they are transferring these skills in meaningful contexts. Each week, students will complete a progress check that includes five questions related to the word study focus.
