Soundwave is Scullen's extracurricular contemporary string group. We play world/ethnic music for the first few months of the year and fun, contemporary music from December through April, including pop, rock, fiddle, movie themes and more. All 7th, 8th grade and advanced 6th grade violin, viola, cello or bass players are welcome to join. We meet at 7am on Tuesdays September through May with performance opportunities at Scullen orchestra concerts, WV Fine Arts Festival and a possible community event.
Soundwave Saraswati: In September, Soundwave Saraswati will launch on Tuesdays. This is open to all students who already play their instruments. We will be learning carnatic music - Saraswati raga and Nottuswara tunes. Students who already have carnatic experience will serve a role models and have will have an ability to share what they already know (dance, song, etc...).
Soundwave Contemporary: In December/January, 6th grade students who take private lessons can join and Soundwave Contemporary will commence. First we will play holiday carols at a Wolves Hockey Game! Then in January, Soundwave will prepare fun, contemporary music for an April concert featuring our new electric instruments!
REHEARSALS Soundwave practices before school on Tuesdays from 7:00-7:40 a.m. Students who join are expected to attend and be on time to all rehearsals and performances. Students should arrive between 6:45 a.m.and 6:55 a.m - Ms Silberman and/or Mr. White will be there at the main Scullen entrance . Students are expected to be unpacked and ready to play by 7:00 a.m. If students arrive late, after 7am, the Scullen doors will be locked and they will have to wait for another Scullen staff member to let them into the building (students will need to show that staff member their student ID) Consistent attendance is an expectation.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES Soundwave/Saraswati students will be provided with the music that we will use for this year’s group. Students can use their Orchestra Binder to keep their Soundwave music throughout the year. Students in Soundwave will be put into a Google Classroom for Soundwave.
Required Rehearsals and Dates
Students will receive a detailed calendar with rehearsal and concert dates. This year, 2026, Soundwave will perform at the Waubonsie Valley Fine Arts Festival.
There is a new protocol for early groups at Scullen. Students will be met by one of the music teachers from 6:45-6:55am. After that time the doors will be locked. Students may enter if a Scullen staff member lets them in - students are asked to show their ID to that staff member and let them know they are in an early music group.
