Time Capsule

On Friday, your child brought home a time capsule. It is meant to be saved until they graduate from high school in 2034. They can add photos or small objects to it if you would like. Please keep it in a safe place until high school graduation. My daughters did this and it was fun to read what they thought was important 10 years later.

Volunteer

Humphrey

We are getting ready to start a new project that we so excited about. Our current read-aloud is The World  According to Humphrey. In this story, Humphrey is a pet hamster in a 2nd-grade class. Every weekend a child has a chance to take Humphrey home. We get a glimpse into the students’ lives as Humphrey narrates his visits.  Your child will have an opportunity to take Humphrey ( the stuffed animal version) home with them for an evening. Their assignment will be to write one entry in Humphrey’s journal about an “adventure” that he had. An “adventure” can be anything from a family outing, to a family activity at home. The journal entry should be written from Humphrey’s perspective; just as if he were the one telling the story.

Please be sure to return Humphrey and his journal the very next day. Your child will share their completed entry with the class at that time.

If Humphrey happens to have a mishap while at your home, a wash on the gentle cycle would be greatly appreciated.

Volunteer Opportunities

Valentine Card Exchange Letter (sent home on 1/31)

Our next ELA unit focuses on exploring life through the lens of someone other than oneself.  This will be shown through the book Nadia’s Hands by Karen English and Jonathan Weiner. This text discusses the consequences and challenges one must face when a different perspective is not considered. In Nadia’s Hands, when Nadia is chosen to be a flower girl in her aunt’s traditional Pakistani wedding, her hands are decorated with beautiful designs made with Mehndi. When Nadia's hands are done, she worries about what her classmates will say. Will they understand that the decoration on her hands is part of her Pakistani heritage?

We thought the students might enjoy seeing and learning about the beautiful designs made in person.  Is there anyone who is skilled in this art and would be willing to come on Friday, February 16th from 11:30-1:30 and demonstrate this art to our class?

We are looking for volunteers who would be comfortable putting together a short presentation on the art of Mehndi to present to our classes.  We're also looking for volunteers who want to apply Mehndi to students.  You would also need to be willing to bring the materials.

Please respond by e-mail ASAP if you are available and let me know how you can help.

Please sign up on this link if you would like to volunteer in the classroom.

5Essential Survey

Parents across Illinois once again have an opportunity to participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of your child’s school as it relates to the important elements of school effectiveness.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by the University of Chicago. All survey responses will be kept confidential. The state will provide survey results for individual schools only if a school has at least 20 percent of parents take the survey. If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school.

 To take this short survey:

1.  Visit the 5Essentials Survey Link

2.  Type and select “Dupage” as "County." (The county is the location of the school district's main office.)

3.  Type your school's name into the "School" field and select your school.

Second Grade Musical

Dear Parents,

Our second grade students have been hard at work in music class, preparing for our 2nd grade “Informance” Music Program!  Our theme this year is “How to Make an  Apple Pie and See the World”. We are so excited to give you a peek into some of the things we do in music class each day!

EVERY student in 2nd grade has an important part in the program.  Students will be playing instruments, singing, and even introducing each piece! If your student will NOT be able to attend, it is important that you let me know so that I can assign their part to another student.

This year’s program will be held on Monday, February 26, at 6:30 PM in the Peterson gym. Students should arrive by 6:15 and report to the multipurpose room. Please plan on the program lasting around 35 minutes. There is no dress code for the program, though we have been talking about what it means to put on a “professional” performance, so the students may have some ideas about what they would like to wear. :)

We are looking for parents to help with the set and decorations for our program. If you would be interested in helping out, please fill out the form at http://bit.ly/Peterson2ndGradeProgram2024.  Stage setup will take place the week of February 19.

The students and I cannot wait to share our “Apple Pie” performance with you! I am so proud of the work they have done, and I know they will put on a fabulous show. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Week of Sept.18

We had a wonderful week of school and have started to dive into our ELA, social studies, and math curriculum. Today the first week of ELA curriculum is coming home with your child. We did these pages together. They are not graded. There are some pages that will be blank because we studied those concepts on the computer, verbally, or in another hands-on activity instead of the worksheet. These are not homework!

Some students thought we were having a word study test today. We will have a test on the high-frequency words and patterns at the end of the unit, not weekly. We will pick ten HFW and ten pattern words for all the patterns we study over the 5 weeks.

Writing - Ideas to write about, Complete sentences with capital letters & proper punctuation

Word Study - CVCe words, HFW- most, long, called

First Day of School Email

Welcome to Second grade! We had a wonderful first day of second grade. Thank you for sending your child prepared and ready for school. I’m including a lot of information in this email. A few items are repeated so that you have everything in the same place.

Positive Behavior Plan

In order for our school day to run smoothly and offer everyone the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, there are basic school/classroom rules and procedures. We are discussing acceptable behaviors that all fall under the categories of being SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, and RESPECTFUL of ourselves, others, and school property at all times.

There are various opportunities throughout the school and the classroom that give children the chance to be recognized for making good choices. Positive reinforcement is an important part of our behavior plan.  These rewards include:  Panther Pride Points – (school-wide reward) Students can use these at the school and classroom raffles. Each day your child will have the opportunity to earn these Points by showing above-and-beyond behaviors (always listening, working hard, completing work, helping others, etc.). Points can be earned individually, in groups, or as a whole class. This management system allows the children to realize that certain behaviors will be praised. Modeling and rewarding expected behavior always seem to make the classroom run smoothly.

If a student is not being respectful, responsible, or safe, he/ she will fill out a think note to take home. Please sign and return the Think Note the next day. Thank you for supporting the behavior plan in advance.

Class Dojo Photo Release

Please fill out the photo release form if you have not for our Class Dojo site. (This was sent home today if your child did not come to Meet and Greet.) ClassDojo will be where I will be placing pictures of what we are doing in the classroom weekly. This is a closed group where only our class's students and parents can view the pictures.  I hope you will enjoy seeing what we are doing in the classroom!

Take Home Folder

Your child will be bringing home a Take Home Folder each day. Please review the contents each night and help your child be responsible for returning it to school the next day. If you have any items for me, please place them in your child’s Take Home Folder as we open them every morning. The first homework, “Me in a Bag” will be sent home tomorrow.

Communication

Communication is important for student success. I will be sending a weekly email with updated curriculum information and important dates by Monday each week. This information will be saved on our google site, so you can access it easily. I will also update Class Dojo with photos so you can get a peek into the classroom. Please communicate with me through e-mail if you have any questions or comments.
