Literacy, or English Language Academics, consists of 3 components: reading, writing and word study. These subjects are covered during various points during the day, and can often be learned together! Below is a brief overview of some of the things 2nd graders do to develop their literacy skills throughout the academic year.

Word study in the Common Core includes a focus on Print Concepts & Phonemic Awareness (K-2), Phonics and Word Recognition, and Fluency (K-5).
Students will be assessed throughout the year over the skills and concepts practiced in class (high frequency words, spelling patterns, and common prefixes/suffixes).
There are 4 thematic units that will be covered during the school year. These literacy units will be integrated within the science and social studies curriculum to allow students to learn new content and concepts in the most efficient way possible!

Eureka Math is our district resource that we use in the classroom. The curriculum is broken down into modules which is equivalent to a unit.
