3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are invited to be part of Battle of the Bluestem Books! Participants work in teams of up to four students to answer questions about the 20 titles on the 2026 Bluestem book list.

You may read and/or listen to the books on the list at school and/or at home. Some books are challenging, others are light. We encourage you to read the challenging books with a family member or an older sibling.
Create a team. Teams may have a maximum of 4 members and can include students of various grade levels (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade). Between all members of the team, each of the 20 Bluestem book titles should be read (e.g., each teammate reads 5 books).
Read books for understanding. The goal is to remember facts from each book. The Battle is a game-show format. Comprehension questions will be asked. The answer is always: “Which book and which author” best answers the question.

The Cowlishaw battles will be held on Wednesday, 4/8 during the school day.
The top Cowlishaw team will advance to the district Battle of the Bluestems on Thursday, 4/23 at 5:00 p.m. (arrival by 4:45 p.m.) at Welch Elementary School. Families will be responsible for driving students to the event and remaining there until is over (families are welcome to watch). Mrs. Allen will meet the Cowlishaw team at Welch the evening of the event.

One member of each team will bring their charged Chromebook to the LMC at the designated grade level time. There are 42 questions (2 practice questions). Teams have up to 20 seconds to answer each question.
All participants earn a certificate, an extra LMC book check out certificate, and will be invited to the LMC for extra Makerspace time.
Each member of the 1st place team from each grade level will be invited to select a book from our new book cart. The book will be donated in their name to the school library (small picture inside) and they will be the first to check out!
Our 1st place Cowlishaw team will earn team shirts created by Mrs. Bergquist to celebrate their hard work and to wear to the district Battle of the Bluestem!
