My exchange semester at Hitotsubashi University, particularly within the International Public Policy (IPP) program, has been an academically and personally enriching experience. I immediately felt comfortable at the university, as I was well looked after and received a very warm welcome. The university has a beautiful campus, especially during autumn when all the leaves turn yellow. Most people travel to Japan during spring for cherry blossom season, but Japan is at least as beautiful during autumn. Moreover, winter is super sunny in Japan and truly lovely.
Academically, it was fascinating to explore diverse Asian perspectives on public policy and international relations. Studying alongside students from across Asia and beyond deepened my understanding of regional political, economic, and social dynamics. I believe that it is crucial to explore different perspectives and non-Western viewpoints and am grateful to have been able to do so at Hitotsubashi University. Within the IPP program, class sizes are often small, which creates a more engaging academic environment and direct access to professors, which I enjoyed a lot.
Student life at the university and living in the student residence Ikkyo-ryo was equally enjoyable, as it allowed me to build strong friendships with both Japanese and international students. I can only recommend moving into student residence because it makes it easy to connect with other students and form new friendships.
Participating in the IPP exchange has also influenced my future choices by strengthening my interest in international public policy and Asia-related work. Now, I can totally see myself working in Asia or on Asia-related topics.
Outside campus, I highly enjoyed exploring Tokyo and traveling within Japan. Tokyo is not just a busy city; it offers so much more, from culture, temples, and delicious food to hikes in surrounding forests and tranquil parks. There is really nothing that you cannot do in Tokyo. Therefore, I cannot wait to come back and explore even more! See you soon in Tokyo!
