Rural Innovation Making Better Agriculture-RIMBA
Since its initial implementation, RIMBA has been supported through direct investment in equipment, instructional resources, logistics, and community engagement activities. This pilot investment has enabled the successful implementation of AI Literacy and IoT learning activities in marginalised communities and provides evidence of the model's practical feasibility for future scaling.
This initiative has been developed and implemented without external financial support. Every stage of the research and community implementation has been self-funded by the project team, including field deployment, transportation, accommodation, educational materials, IoT devices, AI learning kits, prototype development, and community engagement activities.
The successful outcomes achieved through limited personal resources demonstrate both the feasibility and sustainability of the proposed model. Strategic funding support will significantly increase the project's reach, allowing more marginalised communities to benefit while strengthening evidence generation, capacity building, and long-term sustainability.

To demonstrate the long-term sustainability and scalability of the RIMBA initiative, a phased implementation strategy has been developed. Rather than targeting nationwide implementation simultaneously, RIMBA adopts a progressive scale-up approach, allowing the programme to expand systematically based on available funding, strategic partnerships, and implementation capacity.
The following projections present the estimated annual implementation requirements over a five-year period.
The projected implementation targets represent only a small proportion of Malaysia's rural and marginalised communities, making the proposed expansion both realistic and achievable. The phased implementation strategy is designed to ensure sustainable growth through strategic collaboration with government agencies, educational institutions, industry partners, and non-governmental organisations. As implementation capacity increases, RIMBA can be progressively expanded to reach a broader population while maintaining programme quality and measurable educational impact.

The RIMBA initiative adopts a phased implementation strategy to progressively expand AI literacy and digital innovation among marginalised communities across Malaysia. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the roadmap projects measurable outcomes over a five-year period through strategic partnerships with government agencies, educational institutions, industry, and community organisations.
Under SDG 4 (Quality Education), RIMBA aims to expand from 10 pilot communities in 2027 to 100 communities by 2031, reaching an estimated 300 to 3,000 AI literacy participants while training 50 to 500 teachers and community facilitators. Through its Human-Centred AI pedagogical approach, the programme targets a minimum 30% improvement in AI literacy competencies, enabling learners with limited digital exposure to develop practical AI knowledge and problem-solving skills.
In support of SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), RIMBA will facilitate the distribution of 100 to 1,000 AI and IoT learning kits, enabling communities to engage in experiential and technology-enhanced learning. The programme further projects the development of 20 to 200 community-based innovation prototypes, demonstrating how AI and IoT technologies can be applied to address real-world local challenges. All participating communities will receive Human–Computer Interaction (HCI)-based AI training, ensuring that learning experiences remain accessible, inclusive, and suitable for learners with diverse educational and digital backgrounds.
Contributing to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), RIMBA is committed to maintaining at least 50% participation from women and youth, ensuring equitable access to AI literacy opportunities among traditionally underserved populations. By reducing technological and educational barriers, the initiative seeks to foster inclusive participation in the digital economy and strengthen community resilience through AI-enabled capacity building.
Collectively, these projected outcomes demonstrate RIMBA's long-term vision of transforming AI literacy from isolated pilot interventions into a sustainable, scalable national initiative that empowers marginalised communities through inclusive, human-centred, and technology-driven education. Malaysia presents substantial opportunities for expanding inclusive AI literacy initiatives across marginalised communities. Based on current demographic and settlement distributions, the country comprises more than 850 Indigenous (Orang Asli) villages, 317 FELDA settlements, and over 5,000 rural villages, representing more than 6,000 potential communities that could benefit from accessible AI education and digital capacity-building programmes.
Recognising the scale of this opportunity, RIMBA adopts a phased implementation strategy rather than pursuing nationwide deployment simultaneously. The programme is designed to begin with carefully selected pilot communities before progressively expanding through strategic partnerships with government agencies, educational institutions, industry, non-governmental organisations, and local community leaders.

The largest investment is allocated to AI and IoT learning equipment, including micro:bit kits, sensors, and supporting technologies, which enable participants to engage in hands-on, project-based learning. Additional resources are dedicated to laptops and tablets to ensure equitable access to digital learning, particularly in communities with limited technological infrastructure.
Beyond technology, the budget prioritises capacity building through facilitator training, the development of AI literacy learning modules, transportation and logistics for remote community implementation, and systematic monitoring and evaluation to measure educational outcomes and programme effectiveness. Resources are also allocated for documentation and impact reporting to support continuous improvement, accountability, and evidence-based scaling.
This projected budget is intended as a planning estimate for future implementation and may be refined according to local contexts, community needs, and strategic partnerships. By investing in both technological infrastructure and human capacity, RIMBA establishes a sustainable foundation for expanding inclusive AI literacy programmes while ensuring that implementation remains accessible, scalable, and responsive to the needs of marginalised communities.

By adopting a phased approach, RIMBA enables governments, development partners, philanthropic organisations, and industry collaborators to support expansion incrementally while ensuring responsible resource utilisation and continuous programme evaluation.
