Why Elementary School Counseling?

The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. During these years, they are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family. The knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.

Counseling Services

Confidentiality

The counseling relationship between students and their school counselor requires an atmosphere of trust and confidence. Students must trust the school counselor to be able to enter into a meaningful and honest dialogue with the school counselor. Therefore, protecting your child’s right to privacy is very important to the school counseling program here at Mann Elementary. The only exceptions to confidentiality exists when your child is being hurt, your child wants to hurt someone else, or your child wants to hurt him/herself.

Classroom Guidance

A very important piece of the Horace Mann School Counseling Program consists of weekly lessons in all K-6 classes. Topics vary per grade level and are based on research, best practice, and data collected from student, staff, and parent surveys. These topics include skills for learning, empathy and compassion, problem solving, feelings identification and many others.

Individual Counseling

If your child is experiencing difficulties with emotion management, managing life changes, emotions, friendship building, problem solving or behavior, they are welcome and encourage to meet with Mr. Quaye for individual counseling. Students can be referred by a parent/guardian, staff member or schedule an appointment with Mr. Quaye by filling out student request for school counselor forms.

If you would like to refer you child to Mr. Quaye, please click on the "Parent Counseling Request Form" button located at the top of the page.

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling presents students the opportunity to meet with their small group of peers to discuss different situations, behaviors, and feelings. The purpose of these group sessions is to enhance students academic or personal/social development and interactions with their peers.

To ensure students' successful in participation in these small groups, parents support will be valid.
