Optional: do a Scavenger Hunt, take a walk, do an Art Project, learn more about why leaves change color, play in leaves, listen to Autumn stories!
You'll do a Magic Spot every month, and you can do your own as often as you like, even every day. Magic Spots help you notice more things happening around you in nature and help you become a better observer - an important science practice!
Remember, "nature" is all around! It's best if you can go outside but even if you can just look out a window and see trees or plants, birds, ants, or clouds, those are all parts of nature that you can use to practice your observation skills.
TIP: Be sure to tell your parents what you are doing so they don't worry about you when you are quiet for 10 minutes!! (Also so they don't disturb you in your sit spot)
(If you don't have a journal, any piece of paper will work - keep it to share with your teacher!)
If you have your Taking Root Journal, you can use that, otherwise, any paper, even a piece of cardboard, will do. Write or draw what you are observing in your sit spot about how you can tell it is Autumn. Be sure to add the date and describe the weather!
Don't forget to use the words "I Notice" to start your sentences. Then use the words "I Wonder" to write some thing you wonder about what you are observing. Last, write down some things starting with the words "It Reminds Me Of" to describe more about what you are observing.
If you have any "I wonder" or "it reminds me of" things to add, write those down in the squares, too!
If you have your Taking Root Journal, these pages are in your journal!
Put an X over the things you find, and write notes to remind you what you noticed and wondered about those things, and if they reminded you of anything.

Why do we have seasons?
Why do leaves change color?
More about fall colors
On a windy day, when leaves are falling, go outside and try to catch as many as you can!
If you have leaves raked in a pile, JUMP IN!!!
These neighborhood kids were smart - they asked me if they helped rake our leaves into a pile if they could jump in it! It was really nice having help with raking, and it was really fun watching them jump in the leaves!
