The 'Green Flag' is a unique learning program in sustainable development. Green Flag is operated by 'Keep Sweden Clean (Håll Sverige Rent)' and is part of the international network, Eco-Schools.
The 'Green Flag' invites Sweden's schools and businesses to translate knowledge into direct action. At SIS, we have raised the Green Flag to show that a sustainable future begins now.
At SIS, we are currently running three simultaneous projects focusing on Sustainability, this website being one of them.
One project within Sustainability at SIS is Global Collaboration. Global Collaboration can have several facets and we want to focus on collaboration in terms of knowledge sharing. Barbara Mikulski said ‘Each one of us can make a difference. Together we make change'. But how do we know what happens locally and globally in terms of sustainability? What are the differences people make? How can we share the information? How can we learn from it and apply it to our situation? Our goal for this project is to gather relevant, inspiring information and make it accessible to the school community as a tool to support a sustainable future.
Our school curriculum and community are international. The variety of cultures helps us realize how differently countries approach sustainability and the wealth of progress made worldwide. This progress - no matter if individual, group, or by country - should be easily accessible to our students and school community. Many amazing ideas and steps towards a sustainable future do not reach us. Our goal is to gather and share this information and create a knowledge hub, to learn from each other, raise awareness and appreciation for worldwide efforts.
Our project focuses on knowledge sharing and can be seen as supporting all the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, deepening our students' understanding of what is already being done, triggering creativity and action. Understanding the link between people, profit and planet is invaluable.
Our international community is part of an economic group that allows for frequent change of consumer products. Raising awareness of the impact of these frequent replacements, and in addition, how to dispose or allow for reuse of the discarded products, can be beneficial to limit the environmental impact of this current consumer behavior.
We will work cross-school (lower, middle, high school) to implement a lecture/seminar system with a focus on Responsible Consumption. The seminars/lectures will be age-appropriate for the various sections.
Sustainability means that we 'meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs’. The 3 pillars of Sustainability (social, ecological, and economic) need to be in balance to ensure successful sustainable development. Otherwise, we can not ensure a positive future for people, planet, and profits.
We will keep you informed of when and where the seminars will take place!
This goal focuses on the UN Global Goal nr 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. We will be focusing on recycling. The goal is for the students and wider school community to gain a better understanding of these issues, and make conscious decisions in these areas; with the aim of minimizing waste in school, increased waste separation, and recycling.
The areas we tackle are environmentally friendly school supplies and waste separation. We are specifically hoping to limit single-use plastics in our school environment.
Currently, a trial project is running in annex B where we are hoping that students from each grade will take care of the recycling each week. Highlighting the ecological impact of our choices and how items are produced/disposed of will help inform the students and staff to make better choices. Natural resources can be saved through recycling, reclaiming, or reusing materials. By working together, the school community will understand that every little bit will help to achieve a more sustainable future.
