SIS Mother Language Week 2021
A celebration of mother tongue and language learning
In order to recognise all the languages we speak at SIS, the EAL department is hosting the mother language week from 21- 26th of February 2021
Did you know?
Students at SIS come from over 60 different countries and together speak around 50 different languages.
In EAL classes, students are encouraged to do activities using their mother tongue. Being good at your mother tongue helps you to learn English (and other languages).
Let's celebrate our multilingualism together!
International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day was first started by the UN in February 2000 in order to safeguard language diversity. Many languages in the world are in danger of dying out. In fact very 2 weeks a language disappears taking with it a culture and linguistic history. It is important that we maintain our mother languages and are proud of all the languages we speak.

Mother Language Week at SIS
Last year we decided to celebrate International Mother Language Day with a whole week of multilingual activities at SIS.
Subject teachers and advisors joined the EAL department by doing activities in their classes and showing videos that explain the importance of all languages.
This year we hope to do even more. We are offering students a chance to gain house points by participating in our language challenges. See details below.
The Inter-house Language Challenge has now closed!
Thank you to all the people who entered this year. We had entries in 17 different languages for the translation challenge and tongue twisters in 12 different languages. It is great that so many people were able to share with us at SIS. See our look and listen page for some examples of entries and work done during Mother Language week.
