Below are creative responses curated by members of the cast, spanning mediums from poetry to photography. These works are directly inspired and influenced by The Shewing-Up of Blanco Posnet, Don Juan in Hell, and George Bernard Shaw himself.
Sketch of the devil pulling the veil of belief down for humans
Can I tell you a secret, Señora?
The Devil is my friend.
A paradox draped in velvet and flame,
His shadow warmer than a saint’s hands.
Handsome, yes—an anomaly of grace,
His voice like silver poured in the dark.
His kindness outshines the hunger of beggars,
A feast of wit for the starved of soul.
Morsels of amusement in his black kingdom,
Laughter curled like smoke in the air.
I, the Commander of Calatrava, long to see him again.
A reflection piece of what the Hellions see in Hell. The fire inside the eye is a reflection of what it is seeing. The story behind the fire is based on the scenes in “Don Juan In Hell” when everyone performs their own activities in Hell, It is supposed to represent the chaos of everything going on. In the pupil, there are black scribbles, representing the craziness of the eye view. The eye is a bit widened due to the shock of the sight. The eyelashes on the eye were made to look like long bony, devil-like fingers emerging from the eye. The piece was created using gems to pop certain features, and patterns were added to add depth. It also features blood tears made to represent the suffering in Hell.”
Message from the Author, MJ Brendel
This is a letter written from the perspective of Don Juan to Doña Ana as a way to explain why he decided to leave Hell. Please note that when writing, I took direct quotes and repeated ideas from GBS’s essay, "Epistle Dedicatory to Arthur Bingham Walkley,” and from Acts Three and Four of Man and Superman. I leave you with these words by Shaw:
"There is only one true happiness in life, to love and be loved."
George Bernard Shaw does something really special and unique in his writing (especially for his time). Whether because of his fear of women, or the lack of empathy presented to him in his childhood, he writes badass women who are filled with rage and know what they want.
Rubbing rugged knees and elbows,
Echoes swallowed by the void.
Voices audible, but never heard,
Drowned in sermons and smoke.
Anarchists dissect the corpse of virtue,
Weighing souls on rusted scales.
Perpetual motion, the farce of fate—
Titular battles, dust in the wind,
Will not win the war.
God! Do you recall what you stand for?
Or is your throne as empty as your wrath?
Able-bodied paupers,
The wisest of fools.
Do you hear the laughter?
Those are the Hellions.
Snarling, cackling, whining, moaning,
Hellish behavior, you think.
Yet Hell is the only place
Where you can do nothing but
Amuse yourself—
No saints to scorn, no love to trust.
No duty pressing on your back,
No voices telling you to kneel,
No duty, and consequently no work,
Only the racket of endless chatter,
Arguments that are never ending,
Guilty pleasures satisfying needs.
The Devil welcomes you with open arms,
Not to punish, not to burn,
But to let you speak,
To let you think,
To let you amuse yourself
Forever.
