There were three conditions to select a community project. It should be community-oriented, achievable, and purposeful. We also added a new condition that was to have fun doing it.
Our Community Action Goal is based upon the idea of "Think Globally, Act Locally". In our English class, we were discussing the coltan conflict in Africa and how it was affecting the local community, the environment, and animals living in the area. We learned that we could help by recycling the coltan that was on the mobile phones that we were not using anymore. We got to know about the Jane Goodall Institute, so we decided to collect mobile phones and send them to an organization that recycles them and sends the money of this activity directly to the Jane Goodall Institute and its chimpanzee Sanctuary in Tchimpounga, Democratic Republic of Congo.
To collect the mobile phones we have decided to organize a contest in which we have to impersonate teachers of our high school. The entrance to the concert could be a used mobile phone or a piece of used clothes. Mobile phones will go to the program "Mobilise for the Jungle" and we will take the clothes to the recycling point in our city. Per every 30 mobile phones we recycle, we sponsor a chimp for a year.
In this way, we promote recycling among our community and also support global projects.
To work effectively, we divided ourselves into three groups: organization of the event, advertising and raising awareness campaigns, and reporting and communication.
Tasks of the Organizing team: Looking for the actors and actresses, asking for permission to teachers to be impersonated, booking the locations, arranging calendars, keeping records of the collected mobile phones, contacting externals organizations to which we donate the mobile phones and the clothes.
Tasks of the Advertising team: raising awareness campaign and producing posters and video. These activities are very important because we cannot go personally to all the classes to explain the project because due to Covid 19 we are divided into coexistence groups.
Tasks of the Reporting and Communication team: gathering and sharing information, taking pictures, posting at the Global Scholars platform, and making this website about the project.
