Blind Man Driving

What I did: I wanted to make things sound much more clearer, so I added compression to the drums and bass. I also wanted to make sure that all of the instruments were not all next to each other so I used panning to avoid drowning out an instrument. I changed the volumes up based on what was heard more and what needed to be louder. Finally, using Multiband and Limiter I changed how things were vertically in the mix.

What I learned: In this mix I learned how I could change where things were and how they were heard using Compression, and learned that I could also change positions of instruments vertically with Multiband and Limiter. I also learned how to fit in soundeffects with automated panning anywhere in the mix.

Sampling Project.wav

Dilla Style Remix

What I did:

I started off by finding some drum beats and put them on the tracks that sounded good to me. After that I started to find regular beats that I could sample that would sound good with the drum beats that I found. Once I paired the tracks up and figured out what sounded good together, I went and found movie and sound clips to sample and add to my mix.

What I learned:

I learned what sampling was with taking tracks and putting them together to make my own song. I learned how to import sound clips from websites and I learned how to add audio effects to my songs. I also learned how to mix unrelated tracks together and make them sound good.

Doctor Who Theme Remix

What I did:
I started by putting instruments on the two original tracks to give it some type of theme where I could add good samples to it. I started pulling samples that would provide a good bass and melodies. Once I had the samples I picked the length that I wanted and started to use phasers and flangers to give it some space noises. Then finally I added the Tardis sounds and it was done.

What I learned:
I learned how to use things like phasers and flangers, learned how to take samples and shorten them. I learned how to bend pitch, and use automation to change the volume and panning while the theme was playing.

Remix 4.1.wav

Remix In Live

What I did:
I figured out that I could change the colors so I could know what I was going to use. I picked the fourth of the sample packs because it sounded the best to me. I started changing the volume and panning during the song and played with the automation. Then I started changing up tracks during the song and adding in sound effects as well.

What I learned:

I learned a lot, like how to use Ableton Live and use automation. I also learned how to use the Push and how to use it without having to do anything on the computer. I learned more about incorporating sound effects into my songs too.

Fix The Mix

When I first got the mix it was a mess. So I decided that I was just going to take the sounds out that sounded really bad and didn't fit in well. Then, I started using the MIDI editor on the tracks that I could and turned them down a bit since they were a pretty high octave. Once I had them in a tone that I liked I changed the instruments into a beat that flowed well and where I could be in a place to add more tracks. Finally, I decided where to add pans and use an EQ.

I learned a lot, like how sometimes in order to fix something that doesn't sound very good I just need to remove the problems all together. I learned how to use MIDI editor and change the instruments of certain tracks. Overall I learned a lot more about the interface of Bandlab.

Jake's First Stage Beat

At the start of the project I already knew that I wanted to make a jazz song. So I knew I was going to need a saxophone, and maybe a piano, so I set those aside. I put the drums in first and set them to pan 0 since they were supposed to be in the middle if they were on stage. Next I put a bass on because I knew I was going to need that to provide a little background and add some diversity to the beat, and I put it at pan 50 left. Next of course I added the saxophone because that's needed in a jazz song, and I put it at pan 25 left. Next I added piano tracks because I thought it sounded good at 25 right. Finally I added some tamborine at 50 right because it blended in well with the rest of the beat.

I learned a couple of things, like how when you pan the speaker left or right the sound isn't actually moving left and right, its just coming more out of one speaker than the other. I have also learned pan is short for panoramic, and that the pan knobs is what controls where the sound is going to be heard from. Pan knobs also rotate from left to right. I learned that a Graphic Equalizer or Graphic EQ is what changes how loud the sound is heard and where it is heard vertically. Overall, the most of what I have learned from this is how we can change how sound is heard.
