Getting a chance to learn about Joey Stuckey and his story was one of the highlights of my year. To hear his experiences in person was very inspiring to me and I was glad to be able to mix this song. I moved the tracks left to right and up to down according to the way I mentally would place them on a stage. I also added compressors to the bass and the drums in order to amplify them without changing their volumes.
For my last project in music tech, my time to finish was unfortunately cut short, but I still enjoyed mixing the tracks in this song. Joey Stuckey's visit to our class upon this project was a very cool experience and it was the thing I enjoyed most in the class this year.
Upon learning more about the artists J. Dilla and De La Soul, I set out to make something inspired by their styles. I gathered rounds of drumbeat samples, created my own doubled basslines, and then looked for a sample to base my song around. I put some different filters on my beats and bass, then came across a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sample I decided to use. I then arranged all the pieces I had come up with and created my song.
I'd never done something like this, and I'm not an avid movie watcher so I did have a slight trouble finding my sample, but I finally ended up settling on one from a childhood classic. This music is definitely different from anything I've ever listened to or made, but I think that's the cool part about it.
With this project, I made up 3 different arpeggiated melodies with different beats behind them. Each mini-song was a faster or slower pace than the other, going in order of medium, fast, slow in the video. My favorite song was the fast one because I really like the panning reverb I added!
I enjoyed trying to match the energy of each piece of hypnotic art with my own music, and this is definitely something I've never tried before!
The first step in my process was to create a drum beat with a simple 808 kit. I adjusted different aspects of my kit and added reverb. Then, I used my push to create sets of melodies and accent melodies to give the piece some more color. I also added reverb to my melody, making it sound laid back just like the lofi genre.
Lofi is one of my favorite music genres, yet I'd never attempted to make a lofi track myself. I really enjoyed creating this because it's refreshing to hear/create simplistic and relaxing music in a world that moves along so fast.
This was the first mix I got to create in LIVE this school year! It was cool to get back into the software and relearn or discover new things about it I hadn't last year. There wasn't much of a process to this mix besides panning, and I just played around with the loops in the sample pack I chose.
I really enjoyed making multiple remixes of this and choosing my favorite to publish. I want to become more versed with the push so I can add more cool effects into my pieces and make my mixes even better.
For this, I started off by removing tracks I didn't like so much and then went from there. I changed up a lot of the instruments and added a lot of reverb to give a spooky effect. I also added some zombie sound effects followed by a swinging bat to create an image of a zombie fighting game.
I really enjoyed making this and learned more about adding special sound effects to pieces and how it can make them a lot more interesting. It's really cool how music can create a visual image in your head when you're listening to it.
