Collaboration matters Excellence in everything Community first Equity for everyone Continuous growth
It has been a great week of activities across the school as we continue to build our enrichment offer and support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the children. This week we have seen our girls play two more fixtures in their football league as well as a group of UKS2 boys attend a tournament themselves and all children involved showed excellent teamwork and pride in representing our school once more. We have also had our Y2 children continue our partnership with the local St Thomas Church on Maryon Grove as they learnt about the Easter story. Year 5 pupils attended a Tender Re:Set celebration event linked to the RHE curriculum about healthy relationships and positive well-being and came back with posters and leaflets to share with the other children and their families. In Reception this week, both classes took part again in 'Skype a Scientist' as they supporting their learning across the early years foundation stage.
On Thursday of this week, our Y5&6 boys football team had a memorable time representing Woodhill. They won all 5 of their group games with goals shared among the team and overcame local rivals Cardwell in the semi-final. After exceptional performances and teamwork throughout, they were unlucky to lose to St Fidelis in the final but they had an amazing time and even had caps gifted as prizes.
This evening, we will host our 3rd Iftar, the traditional breaking of the fast for our muslim families. This event has been a huge success over the last couple of years and is open to everyone. Whatever your religion, background or race, we would love to see you back at school this evening for this celebration. I hope you can attend.
Have a good weekend

What we have learned this week
Catkins - The Children have been learning about the alphabet by seeing, saying and signing letters. The children in Catkins have been enjoying spending time in the garden on the swings, busy boards and playing hide & Seek. In catkins the ball pit has been fun by jumping in and watching all the colourful balls flying everywhere. The children have also taken an interest in all the new picture books independently or by giving it to an adult to look at.
Year 3 - This week Year 3 have been investigating how water transports through plants. We used blue food colouring to show the water travelling through the xylem! Ask your children about our experiment and what their findings were. For Maths, the children have been exploring mass, weighing and comparing different objects. We have continued our Art journey by following the work of Hilma AF Klint, creating our own abstract art and using different painting techniques to create space-themed backgrounds. During RHE, Dilara and Safa explained that, "All children should have the right to have nutritious meals to keep healthy". Sophia also said that, "Every child has the right to stand up for themselves". Well done Year 3!
Year 6 - This week, Year 6 have had an exciting week, in their curriculum learning, as they started learning more about individual countries in Africa, and researching the Continent of Africa in terms of finding the main rivers, mountain ranges, deserts. To keep those arithmetic skills developing, the children have been improving their `Personal Bests` in their early morning arithmetic challenges. Joel commented, “Bring on the arithmetic challenges.”
In Science, Year 6 have been exploring and finding out more about `Light`, and have been recycling cardboard before measuring out and making a periscope using mirrors to reflect light and images. Emily said, “I didn`t know that we could angle mirrors to reflect images.”
In English, the children have started reading and exploring `The Other Side of Truth ` - a fascinating story set in 1990`s Lagos and London- which follows the journey of Sade and Femi - two young children - as they are smuggled out of Nigeria following the shooting of their beloved mother. Although a fictional story, the themes of political oppression versus freedoms permeate the whole story. The events in the story have prompted excellent discussions in class.
Christian commented that, ``Sade and Femi must have been terrified yet show so much bravery. `` The children have really explored the rich vocabulary, the plot, sequence of events, and background to the story to compose language rich taster drafts. Rebecca said of her initial taster draft, “I feel ready proud of my formal letter so far.”
On top of this, the children took part in an exciting discussion and enquiry task in RE, whereby they have started to reflect - as they look forward to secondary school- on their journey in life, so far. Lastly, but not least, the children continued to improve their practical skills and teamwork in PE. Bella said, “My dribbling and throwing have really improved in basketball.”
