Collaboration matters   Excellence in everything   Community first   Equity for everyone   Continuous growth

It has been a good week at Woodhill and I was pleased to share our Ofsted inspection report with you earlier this week. We are delighted that the school was judged as good overall with the strand of personal development recognised as being outstanding. This is something that we are incredibly proud of through our approach to sports, enrichment and the work of our whole staff team. It is important to recognise the role of our pastoral team who I know many of you know well.

This focus on personal development has continued this week with our junior leadership team and school council meeting earlier this week to discuss plans for the summer term. I know that there is a podcast on the way and we look forward to sharing this with you. While doing assembly this week, I shared with the whole of KS2 that one of our junior leaders, Deputy Head boy, Chidi has recently signed a professional football contract with Crystal Palace. An amazing achievement.

On Thursday of this week, we held our second Panathlon event. The Panathlon is an inclusive sporting event which enabled children from across the school to participate in a broad range of sports including parachute popcorn, polybat, precision bean bag, new age kurling, boccia blast, flight path and skittles.

Thanks as always for your support and enjoy the bank holiday weekend from myself and the whole staff.

Messages from the office

Safe and respectful parking in the school community

As we are all aware, there are a number of works happening in and around the school which has for the time has had a significant impact on parking before and after school. Even so, I felt it was important to write to you once more about our collective responsibility to maintain a safe journey to school for everyone while also respecting the local residents. We can do this in a number of ways:

In the meantime, we will continue to speak with parents who place members of our school community at risk and if deemed appropriate, warning letters will be distributed.

Please consider whether you really need to use your car to make the journey to school at all. Not only is walking a healthier option and better for the environment, but it also helps to alleviate some of the problems we are currently facing at the start and end of the school day.

I am sure we are all in agreement that the safety of all our children must continue to be our primary responsibility. In these circumstances, I appreciate your support in ensuring this takes priority over a convenient drop off or pick up.

What we have learned this week

Year 2 - In maths we have explored and studied whole and equal parts and have tried to identify a half, a quarter and a third.

In English, we have been looking at figurative language based around our core text ' The Promise'. Our students have used techniques such as similes, Alliteration, Onomatopoeia and rhyme in their extended writing.

In DT students have been learning how to design and create parade headdresses. They have been sketching and creating colourful mood boards for the project.

In Geography we are learning about Continents and the Oceans of the world. We have been drawing on key vocabulary such as Population, Climate and the Equator.

In RE students have been studying about Islam and the five pillars Charity, Pilgrimage, Prayer, Fasting and the Shahada.

Year 5 - This week Willow Tree explored properties of 3D shapes, recalling sticky knowledge from Y4. Beech Tree learned how to use a protractor to measure angles, as well as draw lines and angles accurately. "Every quadrilateral has 360 degrees even if it isn't a square". When measuring angles, we know that we have to start from 0 on the protractor on the correct side, just like a ruler.

Our Science topic has been super interesting! We have loved learning about Earth and Space. "I think there is definitely life outside of our Solar system" - an opinion a few of us share! We have learned about the movement of planets within our Solar system; the phases of the moon; and how shadows are formed. We researched different planets and made fact files on our favourite. "My favourite planet is Jupiter because it's the biggest". "I can't believe Saturn has over 100 moons!"

In History, we've immersed ourselves into our WWII topic. We learned about primary and secondary resources and how both are important to inform our knowledge and paint an accurate picture of historical events. "It's important to know about the history of our country and different wars because it's part of our culture and history. Also we can learn from our mistakes".
