Collaboration matters Excellence in everything Community first Equity for everyone Continuous growth

Message from Mrs Cook

Welcome back to school everyone, wishing you all a very Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a wonderful winter break and were able to spend some quality time with friends and family. We anticipate that the new year will bring lots of positivity for us all as a school community, as well as lots of opportunities to learn, laugh and share the wonderful things that will be happening within the classrooms. A new year filled with many moments together to make memories and celebrate!

At the end of last half term our Autumn learning was published and beautiful displays can be seen around the school celebrating the children’s learning and just how far they have come in the time they have been in their new classes. The displays truly do reflect our core values of effort, excellence and perseverance and we are very proud!

As the children return to school they have been excited to start their new texts and topics and we are looking forward to seeing these unfold. Our carefully chosen content places core knowledge at the heart of each curriculum subject. The Global Curriculum gives our children opportunities to make sense of the increasingly complex and rapidly changing world in which they live. Our curriculum enables pupils to think critically about world issues and to develop an awareness of the impact our actions can have on others.

The six global themes the children explore at Rockliffe Manor are: Social Justice and Equity; Identity and Diversity; Sustainable Development; Peace and Conflict; Human Rights; and Power and governance.

Shortly you will receive this term's newsletter that details what your children will be learning and exploring over the next 6 weeks. These are a great opportunity to further support your child in their learning. We know that children learn best when they are immersed in their curriculum and by talking to your children at home about their topics they will deepen and further their knowledge.

And like that, the first week of Spring 1 is done! We very much look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team

Learning this week

Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…

It is getting busier in Nursery as we have had some more new starters join the Rockliffe family this half term! The children have settled in so well and Oyinlola has even taken on a leadership role, leading all of the games and showing our new friends where everything is. As the class continues to grow, so does the hungry caterpillar! The children have been very excited about their new core text and have been engaged in all of the lovely activities throughout the provision.

Reception were so excited to be back and enjoyed sharing their favourite part about their breaks before settling back into routine. This week, they have been exploring habitats and the different features and animals they might find there. Christian shared ‘I see a forest and it has cheetahs’. The most popular area within the provision has been the malleable station, where the children have to free the animals from the ice. Lily said that she thinks they are frozen because they travelled from the Arctic!

In Year 4, the children have been hooked in their core text Wonder. They get very excited when Miss Roper reads passages from the book and they are eager to find out more about the main character Auggie. In English, the children did a conscience alley to determine whether Auggie should go to school. It was lovely to see Liya make connections to her learning in Year 2 when she learnt about Yasmin’s Hammer.

Year 6 has had a brilliant start back after Christmas. They are focused and ready to learn. The new core text, No Ballet shoes in Syria, has them enthralled already and they did exceptionally well during a maths lesson on Fractions, Decimals and percentage. What worked particularly well was the adapted teaching and how they all had the same LI but were able to independently move on to more challenging problems through self selection and live marking.

Here are some of the tweets that can be found on our Rockliffe Manor Twitter page this week

  • The Reception children were excited to explore the provision linked to their new core text and topic. Can you guess what our theme is?

  • Year 4 took part in a conscience alley today debating whether they think our main character, August, should go to school or not.
