Wishing you all a very happy Friday! It’s hard to believe that we are already at the end of January. As we step into a new month, it has been a joy to spend time in the classrooms, watching our children tackle new challenges, make exciting discoveries, and deepen their understanding by connecting their learning from previous terms and year groups. Their enthusiasm and resilience in their learning never fail to impress!
I haven’t been the only one inspired by the learning this week, as we also had the pleasure of welcoming leaders from across the trust to review our phonics provision here at Rockliffe Manor. Mrs. Aliaj, who leads phonics and early reading, was delighted to showcase the fantastic progress across the school. Our children truly shone as they confidently demonstrated their blending and segmenting skills, their growing grapheme knowledge, and, most importantly, how their phonics learning is translating into their reading. Our visiting leaders were incredibly impressed with the children’s engagement, enthusiasm, and pride in their learning.
A huge thank you to our dedicated staff for their hard work in delivering such high-quality phonics teaching and to you, our parents and carers, for your continued support at home. Together, we are building lifelong readers!
This week, we also had the joy of celebrating Chinese New Year, and we would like to send our warmest wishes to all those in our school community who marked this special occasion. The children took part in a wonderful assembly where they explored the rich traditions and culture of the Lunar New Year, learning about the significance of the zodiac, festive customs, and the importance of family gatherings. It was fantastic to see their curiosity and enthusiasm as they engaged with the celebrations. From learning about the legend of the zodiac animals to understanding the symbolism of red envelopes and dragon dances, the children were captivated by the vibrant traditions. We hope that everyone who celebrated had a joyful and prosperous start to the Year of the snake!
During lunchtime this week, I have had the pleasure of spending time on the playground, and it has been fantastic to witness the children playing so joyfully. It is always wonderful to see them demonstrating our school values—showing kindness, respect, and teamwork in their interactions. What has been particularly heartwarming is the way children from different year groups are playing together, supporting and including one another. Whether engaged in a lively football match, a creative game of imagination, or simply chatting and sharing laughs, the sense of community and friendship across the school is truly special. Moments like these remind us of the nurturing and inclusive environment we strive to create every day.
As we look ahead to February, there is much to be excited about, and we can’t wait to continue this journey of learning and growth together.
Have a lovely weekend! We look forward to seeing you all back on Monday.
With very best wishes, Mrs. Cook and the Rockliffe Manor Team
Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…
Nursery
This week, Nursery children have particularly enjoyed learning their new rhyme-time song, Oh, The Grand Old Duke of York. They had great fun practising the song while incorporating different instruments to find the beat. Through this, they have been developing their motor skills and hand-eye coordination—important skills that will support their letter formation as they move into Reception.
Reception
In Reception, the children have been learning about human impact on the environment and pollution. They have taken meaningful action in their classroom by running an animal rescue centre in the role-play area and clearing "rubbish" from the ocean on their topic tables. When asked how they could help the environment, Frankie suggested, “You can make a sign saying stop making pollution because it’s bad for the environment.” Meanwhile, Molly shared, “That’s why you shouldn’t drive cars. I always ride my bike.” What thoughtful and responsible young environmentalists!
Year 1
Year 1 has had a fantastic week of learning! In maths, the children have been developing their understanding of partitioning numbers into tens and ones, demonstrating perseverance and a brilliant growth mindset. They also enjoyed an exciting trip to the library, where they explored a variety of books. A special moment was when Divaynshu was thrilled to find Paddington—Miss Emslie’s favourite story! It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for reading and learning continue to grow.
Year 2
Year 2 has been working hard across all subjects. In English, they have been applying suffixes to words and using past-tense verbs to describe their core text, showing fantastic progress in their writing skills. In science, the children explored the importance of a healthy diet. They had engaging discussions about different food groups before designing their own nutritious lunch. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and creativity shine through!
Year 3
This week, Year 3 pupils have been strengthening their understanding of addition using the column method in a focused catch-up session with Miss White. The group worked with great concentration and determination. Additionally, they had their first lesson on correspondence—it was lovely to see Henry demonstrate a strong grasp of this tricky concept!
Year 4
Year 4 has been exploring the science of sound and vibrations. One of the highlights was making classic string-cup telephones to experience how sound travels. The children were so engaged that the lesson had to be extended! Jacob made an exciting discovery: “If you hold the string, it stops the vibrations and makes the sound quieter.” A great example of scientific curiosity in action!
Year 5
Year 5 had an insightful history lesson this week, learning about the evacuation of children during World War II. Their curiosity led to some fantastic questions about life during that time. Sefa asked, “If the children weren’t dressed smartly, could they get onto the train?” while David wondered, “Who looked after the children when the women were working in factories?” It was wonderful to see their deep engagement and historical inquiry skills developing.
Year 6
Year 6 have been working hard on converting fractions, decimals, and percentages. They have shown fantastic engagement and collaboration, with many stepping up as patient and skilled coaches to support their peers. It has been brilliant to see their teamwork and dedication in action!

We wanted to share with you that this morning in assembly we spoke to the children about not bringing Pokémon cards into school. Lately, they’ve been causing a bit of fuss and upset among some of the children, and it’s beginning to take away from important learning time.We know the children really enjoy them, but we’d appreciate your support in making sure they leave their cards at home from next week. This will help us keep the focus on learning and keep things calm in the classroom.
We would like to increase our resources and maybe have a Lego/Duplo station at playtime. If any of our parents have Lego or Duplo that your child no longer plays with we would appreciate any donations.
Every Tuesday morning from 8:50am, Rockliffe will be holding a Coffee morning. Please feel free to pop along and join us. Friends of Rockliffe joining to start the planning for events. All welcome
