Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a restful half-term and were able to spend some quality time with friends and family.
This first week back has seen some fantastic lessons designed to "hook" and excite the children in their learning. We can’t wait to see where these learning journeys take us over the coming weeks! We were also blessed with blue skies and sunshine on Wednesday; what a difference it made! It served as a lovely reminder that spring is just around the corner, bringing a sense of renewal and fresh energy for the busy term ahead. It was wonderful to see the playground filled with such vibrant energy, and we look forward to more of these brighter days to complement the brilliant experiences happening inside our classrooms.
This week, we were delighted to welcome Aimi Vdovin to Rockliffe Manor. Aimi is the Trust School Improvement Lead for the Inspire Partnership and, as some of you will remember, a former Headteacher of Rockliffe Manor. Aimi visited to conduct a mid-year review; these visits are a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our school’s strengths and ensure we are constantly evolving to provide the best possible education for your children.
The feedback was incredibly positive, and we are so proud of what was observed across all year groups.
Key highlights included:
High-Quality Learning: There was great consistency across the school, with clear modelling used by staff to help children grasp new concepts.
Active Engagement: Our children showed fantastic focus and a genuine love for their learning, tackling complex tasks with enthusiasm and resilience.
A Nurturing Environment: The school was described as calm and respectful—a safe space where children feel confident to collaborate and take risks.
Tailored Support: The strategic way our staff work together ensures that every child, regardless of their starting point, is set up for success.
A particularly heart-warming comment from the visit was that "every adult showed genuine care in every classroom." We have always known that this sense of family is what makes Rockliffe unique, and it is wonderful to have that recognized by an external visitor. A huge thank you to your children for being such brilliant ambassadors for our school and to our families for your continued support
We've had an exciting week with the return of our Book Fair! It was wonderful to see so many families choosing new books and sparking fresh adventures. This has been the perfect way to kick-start our Book Week celebrations leading up to the much-anticipated World Book Day. The children have been buzzing with excitement, eagerly discussing which characters they’ll dress up as for the big day! Please refer to the Book Week letter for more details on the variety of ways we are celebrating next week.
And just like that, the first week of Spring 2 is done! It has been a busy and productive first week back! Please read below for a glimpse into the incredible learning that has happened this week.
We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…
In Nursery, the children have been immersed in the vibrant celebrations of Lunar New Year. From crafting intricate dragons and lanterns to discovering which zodiac animal represents them, the creativity has been flowing! They have also been exploring Chinese symbols and numbers 1–10 in our maths and mark-making areas.
This week in reception the children have been really enjoying their new topic all around bees. The children started off the week developing their understanding of what an insect is and how they can be identified. The class then had the opportunity to use this knowledge in the small world area observing mini beast with magnifying glasses and were very excited to classify them into insects and not insects. William said “The millipede has too many legs, insects only have six legs”. Sofia said “I know bees have three body parts, that makes them an insect and did you know bees actually have five eyes”.
Year 1 this week have been excited to get to know some of the new characters from their English focus ‘UP’. They have been describing and comparing characters as well as showing curiosity when generating questions to ask. In science the children enjoyed exploring the school environment to identify deciduous and evergreen trees before discussing the differences and similarities. Arthur said that ‘the leaves from the evergreen tree are thick because you can’t crush them but you can crush a brown leaf from the deciduous tree’.
Year 2 have been hooked into their new English core text, Starbird. The children read the first part of the story and mapped out Starbirds emotions throughout the story. The children also wrote incredible poems inspired by the theme of animal freedom. Building on our core text, where the starbird longs to be free after being trapped, the children explored what freedom means. They worked collaboratively to generate ideas before crafting thoughtful and expressive poems that celebrated the concept of freedom.
This week Year 3 have been working really hard in their English writing by exploring comparative conjunctions as well as unpicking technical language within their new core text 'Hidden Figures'. They compared the unfair experiences the women faced and were able to explain how each had their own prejudice. Also, they have been really excited to learn how to calculate perimeter and how to use their knowledge of measurement and arithmetic to find the total perimeter of irregular shapes.
Year 4 have enjoyed starting their new core text ‘Tamarind & the Star of Ishta’. They began the week with a tasting session of Indian cuisines and listening to music. They used their senses to create descriptive language based on their experience. They have also been exploring how our main character’s emotions have changed just in the first few chapters and explained why they think this has happened. In maths, they had a great time consolidating their knowledge of perimeter by creating their own rectilinear shapes and challenging their peers to find the perimeter using effective methods.
Year 5 this week, have enjoyed reading the first few chapters of their core text, ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ The children have used their inference skills to write an extract describing the moment the main character woke up after an explosion during the Blitz. In maths, the children have been making connections between fractions, decimals and percentages and they are becoming increasingly confident at applying their knowledge when solving problems.
Year 6 are loving their new core text ‘The Landlady’ and they are so hooked into the story line. As a result of their engagement, their extended write this week has been very effective. In maths, the children have started their new unit on identifying and calculating angles of triangles and quadrilaterals. They have been applying their knowledge of angles in triangles, angles around a point and vertically opposite angles to solve problems showing each step of their workings and explaining their reasoning.
We look forward to another fantastic week of learning ahead!
