As we come to the end of the second full week of this half term, it's been a busy and rewarding time for everyone. We kicked off the week with a whole-school assembly focused on the global goals, a key part of our vibrant curriculum. The assembly introduced the six global themes: identity and diversity, sustainable development, social equity and justice, power and governance, human rights and peace and conflict. The children were encouraged to think about their roles as agents of change and what it means to be a global citizen. They also made meaningful connections between their past learning and these global themes, reflecting on how their thoughts and actions have evolved.
Whilst talking of assemblies, Mr Smith, on Thursday held an assembly on online safety at Rockliffe Manor. We focused on teaching children how to stay safe while using the internet, covering key topics like protecting personal information, being kind online, and recognising potential risks such as inappropriate content and cyberbullying. The children engaged with simple, age-appropriate tips on safe online habits and encouraging open conversations at home. Our goal is to help them enjoy the digital world responsibly and to remind them to always talk to a trusted adult if something doesn't feel right.
Central to our approach to learning is the ethic of excellence, which shines through in the children’s dedication, effort, and the pride they take in their work. This ethos drives each child to strive for their personal best, not only in their learning but in how they present their work. Whether tackling a tricky problem, refining a piece of writing, or collaborating on a project, the children consistently show resilience, attention to detail, and a commitment to producing high-quality work. This ethic of excellence builds a sense of ownership and achievement, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning. We've seen many examples of this ethic in action this week, so why not ask your child how they've demonstrated excellence? Remember, excellence looks different for everyone, and we’re all on a journey to become the best versions of ourselves.
Speaking of excellence… Did someone say 100% attendance? Yes, we did! The excitement was palpable on Wednesday when every single child was present and ready to learn, bringing a wonderful energy to the school. This milestone highlights not only the children’s commitment but also the efforts of parents, teachers, and the whole school community in supporting regular attendance. Let’s celebrate this achievement and aim high for the rest of the term—and the year! Keep up the great work, everyone! Don’t forget to check out our new attendance policy on the school website, reflecting the latest DFE updates.
We’ve been very active on Twitter this week, sharing the children’s learning and interacting with our community. If you’re not already following us, we’d love for you to join! You can find us at @RockliffeManor.
A huge thank you to all the parents who attended the RHE parent consultation and the secondary school information session this week. Your participation on Monday was invaluable, and we appreciate the feedback on the policy under review. To our Year 6 parents, thank you for joining Wednesday’s session on the secondary school application process—your involvement helps ensure a smooth transition to the next stage of your child’s education. We’re grateful for your continued support!
We’re currently finalising our Autumn parental engagement schedule and will be sharing it with you shortly. We’re looking forward to providing more opportunities for you to stay connected with your child’s learning.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!
With very best wishes,
Mrs. Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Let’s take a look at some of the learning this week …
Nursery this week has been focusing on their families and people who are important to them. During literacy the children shared pictures of their families and had the opportunity to tell us who was in the picture and why they are important to them. The children found it fascinating to learn that all families are different and that we all have different people that are important to us. It has been a pleasure to observe Nurseries growing confidence as they become more settled into the EYFS.
Children in Reception this week have enjoyed producing their first piece of written work during our literacy lesson. The children have been working on orally rehearsing a sentence and holding it to support their writing. Reception took great pleasure in writing what makes them unique and special using sentence stems for support and then sharing them with the class. In maths the children have been exploring the composition of numbers and have enjoyed going on scavenger hunts around the learning environment to collect the correct number of items as requested. We have observed some excellent collaborative skills as the children were challenged to work with a partner during the scavenger hunt.
Year 1 has been loving their core text; Beegu this week. They have been role playing the different parts of the story and Alfie loved playing the role of the adult who found Beegu in a box full of puppies. The children then went on to participate in hot seating as Beegu, asking her questions such as; where did you come from? And do you miss your mum and dad?
In year 2, the children have been busy with their core text; Izzy Gizmo. The class have been retelling the story using time adverbials and identifying the characters emotions within the story linking it to our zones of regulation. The class have also worked hard creating expanded noun phrases that describe the crow and Izzy.
In year 3, it was great to see the children working collaboratively, using active learning skills to categorise different tools/artefacts from the bronze, iron and stone ages based on the materials they were made from. This prompted great discussion points from the children.
In Year 4, the children have been working hard on mastering how to write a vivid and engaging setting description. Initially, there were a few misunderstandings in their first drafts, as many began re-telling the story instead of focusing on using figurative language, noun phrases, and the five senses to really immerse the reader in the scene. After a re-teach the next day, they showed much more confidence and began to apply these techniques, making great strides towards their learning goal.
Year 5 had a great science lesson this week where they were introduced to their new topic of Forces. The children explored the effects gravity has on objects and they were able to fully understand the difference between mass and weight.
Year 6 has shown effort in English this week. The children use figurative language to describe a rainforest drawing on their knowledge from their geography learning on the different layers of the amazon rainforest. Riley was able to apply his newly acquired vocabulary from the WCR session. He used the word, ‘nonchalant’ to describe the trees.
