Message from Mrs Cook

Today we approach the end of the second week of this half term and the children’s first full week of school! The classrooms have been alive with the sound of excited children and amazing learning experiences. It was also fantastic to welcome all of our parents into our classrooms for the first time this year for our Meet the teacher sessions. This was a chance for the teachers to share important information with you and for you to get to know your child’s new teacher. We hope you enjoyed the sessions, the PowerPoints will be made available on our website shortly, so please do take a look if you were unable to join us.

It was great to see so many parents at our coffee morning this week too! This week it was hosted by Louise from Chartwells, Louise came to hear feedback on the school lunch provision and I hope you would agree it was very useful! To summarise – most parents were happy with the school packed lunch being introduced following school meals becoming free of charge for all primary school aged children. There were some good points raised for us to further consider also, for example parental preference of a hot meal over the sandwich option, the amount of food the children were eating and the variation of items on offer for the packed lunch option. Parents were all in agreement that they would like their children to be encouraged to try new foods by means of tasters, education etc. In response to these comments, we commit to ensuring Chartwells broadens the range of fruit served as part of the school packed lunch, options will include watermelon, grapes, bananas, pineapple to have more variety throughout the week. We will also ensure to vary the flavours of yoghurt offered. We do hope that these changes will have a positive impact on the children’s lunch experiences.

On Thursday Mrs Wright held an assembly relaunching the Zones of Regulation, it was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn about the zones, explore their own feelings and behaviours and explore some of the tools that they can use to help them with their feelings. The children reflected that all feelings are okay, but It is what we DO with our feelings that matters, because not all behaviours are okay! When we notice that our behaviour is not appropriate, it is a clue that we need to find a tool to take care of our zone differently. This was the first in a series of assemblies planned for this half term to further develop the culture of emotional regulation at Rockliffe Manor.

We also have been very active on twitter this week! We regularly use Twitter to share learning with our community and as a platform to interact with our children and families. Please follow us if you don’t already. You can find us using the twitter handle @RockliffeManor.

We look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team

Learning this week

Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…

Reception have really loved being at school this week and experiencing all of their new routines. They have been introduced to phonics and have been working so hard in order to make the sound of the day. They have also loved joining KS1 in the lunch hall and trying Gail’s delicious food. Ohana wouldn’t let Moss Budd take her plate until it was completely empty! The staff have noted how polite the Reception children are, saying please and thank you - what a wonderful way to show our Rockliffe Manor Values.

Year 4 have loved starting their first full week back and have been immersed in all of their learning. Their core text this term is the ‘Adventures of Odysseus’ and details the long journey Odysseus had to make from the Trojan way back to his hometown Ithaca. The class were mesmerised by the chapter ‘The Cyclops’, they listened, reenacted and then rewrote the ending to the chapter. Darcy said ‘In my story, Odysseus finds a mallet to break down the big boulder to escape while the Cyclops is sleeping. Mitchel added ‘In my story, they find a gigantic pile of tree trunks and use one to prise the boulder away from the opening!’ Year 4’s chapters were brilliant and included lots of exciting vocabulary.

Year 6 have come back to the school year showing great enthusiasm for their last year at Rockliffe Manor. In Science, the children have been looking at the different characteristics of animals and learning how to classify them using the system created by Carl Linneaus. Becoming taxonomists, the children created their own flow charts grouping animals and living things into correct categories based on the characteristics. The children have also enjoyed recalling previous knowledge on shapes using kahoot and have begun to create their own, testing the peers and teachers!
