And just like that, our second week of the Autumn 2 term has flown by! This week,
the children have been busy perfecting their culinary skills, preparing their final
dishes ready to present at the exciting World Café. Our Food Fortnight has been a
brilliant opportunity for the children to explore and experience cuisine from around
the world. We are delighted to remind you that this year's World Café will take place
on Monday, November 17th, 2024! Parents are warmly invited to join us after
school—and please do consider donating a dish to share! It is a fantastic opportunity
to come together and celebrate the wonderful diversity of our community, so we truly
hope to see you there. Be sure to check our Twitter feed to see photos of this
delicious learning in action
On Thursday, we celebrated World Anti-Bullying Day. In assembly, we spoke about the
importance of being an UPSTANDER, not a bystander, and how to choose kindness every
day and to visually celebrate uniqueness and difference, the children wore odd socks too!
Thank you to everyone for supporting the children with this.
If we were not busy enough – our rehearsals for the Nativity and Carol Concert have begun
and it has been wonderful to hear all the beautiful singing filling up the classrooms, as the
children from Nursery up to Year six prepare for the Christmas festivities. The children have
been very busy practising the words to their songs and learning their lines for the Christmas
performances. We hope that many of you will be able to join us for these celebrations in the
coming weeks. These dates have all been shared with you today in our Rockliffe Winter
Calendar, more information will be shared shortly regarding these. So for now, please save
the dates!
At Rockliffe Manor, assessment is at the heart of our learning process as it provides our
children with the opportunity to demonstrate, celebrate and review their learning over the
year. Assessment looks different for different year groups and next week will see the start of
our schools summative assessment period for our children in years 2 - 6. These results will
help inform future teaching and learning. A letter was shared with the families from these
year groups today which provides more information. If you have any questions or concerns
regarding the assessment period or your child's progress please do speak to your child’s
class teacher who will be happy to support.
Although it seems a little while off yet, our Friends of Rockliffe have begun to plan our Winter
Fair. This year we are trying a different approach of holding this after school on Friday 12th
December - more information about this and our other winter festivities will be shared soon.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and engagement. Have a restful and
happy weekend—we look forward to seeing you all next week for more learning, laughter,
and festive preparations!
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…
In Nursery this week, the children have been exploring the concept of families and home
chores for English. Using great actions and turn-taking, they pretended to carry out the
chores they do at home. It was wonderful to hear their sharing, with Rayan excitedly
detailing her jobs and Edudzi loving the roleplay of "hoovering and cooking sizzling
sausages!"
In Reception this week, the children are thoroughly immersed in their new core text, Lima’s
Red Hot Chilli Pepper. They enjoyed a fantastic sensory activity this week: making jelly! This
hands-on experience helped them generate great descriptive language. Toni shared that it
felt "squishy and tasty" and Arlia noticed it "smelt sweet," showing great use of their senses.
In Year 1 this week, the children have shown fantastic oracy skills, recall, and retention as
they retold key events from their core text. They collaboratively created actions to support
their storytelling, especially enjoying the movement for "monster!" After sequencing the
story, they successfully added detailed captions using time adverbials.
In Year 2 this week, the children have been working hard in Maths, beginning to learn the
column method for addition. They have shown wonderful determination and a positive
mindset as they master how to accurately set out and solve these problems. In English, they
are comparing how the character of Paddington changes from the beginning to the end of
their core text, leading to thoughtful and insightful discussions.
In Year 3 this week, the children loved being immersed in their core text and were busy
upleveling sentences from the story using powerful emotive language. These descriptive
sentences will be a key feature in their own creative writing soon. They also enjoyed a
focused yoga session when wet weather stopped their usual outdoor PE!
In Year 4 this week, the children have been working really hard to improve their times tables
scores. They show great enthusiasm during their weekly assessments and are always
excited to see their scores climb. A special mention to Ronnie and Lila for showing fantastic
determination in mastering their 6 and 7 times tables—real progress in a challenging area!
In Year 5 this week, the children have started their new unit on fractions in Maths, and it has
been wonderful to see them engaging with the learning, even when it is challenging. Bessie,
who started the lesson worried, completed all the questions correctly by the end and was
very pleased with her success! They are also loving their reading intervention with Mrs. Aliaj,
where their confidence with echo reading has grown immensely.
In Year 6 this week, the children have worked exceptionally hard as they successfully
completed their in-class practice SATs assessments. They have shown great motivation and
determination to do their absolute best in every paper. Many were so engaged that they
could hardly wait for Miss Lambert to reveal their results!
